Hostile attribution of intent and aggressive behavior: a meta-analysis.

A meta-analytic review was conducted to explain divergent findings on the relation between children's aggressive behavior and hostile attribution of intent to peers. Forty-one studies with 6,017 participants were included in the analysis. Ten studies concerned representative samples from the general population, 24 studies compared nonaggressive to extremely aggressive nonreferred samples, and 7 studies compared nonreferred samples with children referred for aggressive behavior problems. A robust significant association between hostile attribution of intent and aggressive behavior was found. Ef

Children of substance abusers: overview of research findings.

A relationship between parental substance abuse and subsequent alcohol problems in their children has been documented extensively. Children of alcoholics (COAs) are considered to be at high risk because there is a greater likelihood that they will develop alcoholism compared with a randomly selected child from the same community. COAs and children of other drug-abusing parents are especially vulnerable to the risk for maladaptive behavior because they have combinations of many risk factors present in their lives. The single most potent risk factor is their parent's substance-abusing behavior.

Components of cognitive-behavioral interventions to prevent the onset of depression among the high-risk population: a systematic review and component network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a promising strategy for preventing onset of depression. This systematic review and component network meta-analysis (cNMA) investigated efficacious and harmful components including various skills and delivery formats of CBT for preventing depression onset among at-risk populations. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We selected randomized trials of preventive CBT interventions from a previous systematic review (Cuijpers et al., 2021), and conducted an additional search on PubMed and PsycINFO up to January 2022. METHODS OF SYNTHESIS: The primary outcome wa

"The Way They Speak of Masters and Johnson": The Rise and Disappearance of Sex Therapy, 1960-2000.

A keyword search of "sex therapy" in the New York Times shows a rapid rise for articles covering the discipline in the 1970s, an equally rapid reduction in the 1980s, and further decline in the 1990s and into the 2000s. This surprising inflection, given that sex as a marketable construction did not decline in the late 20th century, opens room to examine sex therapy in the contexts in which it could and could not be successful. Sex therapy as a distinct intervention emerged in the 1960s, based on Masters' and Johnson's obstetric-gynecological research focus on satisfying, conjugal sex, and was

The underlying dynamics of a suicidal ideation latent network model: The role of hopelessness, psychopathology, emotion regulation, and behavioral coping skills in adolescents from the general population.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major cause of death among adolescents, with suicidal ideation (SI) being a common symptom in this group. SI arises from a complex mix of biological, environmental, and psychological factors, however, the specific relationships between them is not yet fully understood. Network theory has been proposed as a promising framework to analyze these relationships, with latent network models (LNM) offering a novel approach to capture their complex underlying dynamics. METHODS: We examined a SI-based LNM in a sample of 1539 students from secondary public schools (M = 15.336; S

Empathy and psychosocial assessment of children with celiac disease and siblings and their effects on gluten-free diet.

BACKGROUND: A gluten-free diet is currently the only treatment for Celiac Disease (CD). Many factors can affect gluten-free diet compliance. This study aims to evaluate the empathy levels of children with CD and their healthy siblings, the impact of sociodemographic data on dietary compliance, and the emotional and behavioral effects of CD on patients and their siblings. METHOD: The patients who were diagnosed with CD at least 6 months ago and their healthy siblings were included. Healthy children from different families were included as the control group. Sociodemographic data of the CD case

Multidimensional factors associated with ADHD core symptoms in children: cognition, sleep, behavior, and demographics.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) involves inattention (IA) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (HI), which may be linked to distinct developmental and behavioral profiles. This study examined the demographic, cognitive, sleep, and behavioral factors associated with IA and HI symptoms among children. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 331 children aged 6-12 years (mean = 8.72 ± 1.45 years; 84.6% male), diagnosed with ADHD, participated in this study between December 2020 and December 2022. ADHD symptoms were assessed via Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale-IV (SNAP-IV

Developmental Outcomes at Ages 3-5 among Very-low and Extremely-low-birthweight Children without Major Complications Assessed at 18-24 Months.

Around 9.4% of infants born in Japan have a low birthweight. While some studies have clarified the developmental progress of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) and extremely-low-birthweight (ELBW) infants at 18 months, less is known about how these children fare in preschool. This study aimed to identify VLBW and ELBW infants without major complications and their behavioral and emotional characteristics as preschoolers compared to their infantile development. Participants were the parents of 28 VLBW and ELBW children without major complications. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 1.5-5 was administe

Calcitriol supplementation attenuates cisplatin-induced behavioral and cognitive impairments through up-regulation of BDNF in male rats.

Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment such as memory impairment and concentration problems are now extensively recognized as side effects of chemotherapy. These problems reduce the quality of life in patients. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the effects of calcitriol supplementation (100 ng/kg /day for five weeks) on cognitive impairment, behavioral deficits, and hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) changes following cisplatin treatment (5 mg/kg/ once a week for five weeks). We also determined the impact of cisplatin and calcitriol administration on reaction ti

Staff Perceptions of Responsible Gambling Training Programs: Qualitative Findings.

Staff training in responsible gambling forms an integral component of industry measures designed to respond to and minimize gambling-related harms. Research suggests that venue staff members have the capacity to identify behavioral indicators of problem gambling among patrons, but often are reluctant or fail to respond to patrons unless directly approached for assistance. Understanding the barriers preventing staff from proactively intervening with identified patrons is necessary if a positive shift toward greater levels of assistance for at-risk individuals is to be achieved. A series of focu

Anger and depression among incarcerated male youth: Predictors of violent and nonviolent offending during adjustment to incarceration.

OBJECTIVE: Anger and depression are associated with a number of psychosocial problems, and their comorbidity may exacerbate maladjustment among incarcerated youth. The present study aims to identify whether anger and its different facets (cognitive, arousal, and behavioral), either independently or when conjoined with depressed mood, affects violent and nonviolent institutional infractions. METHOD: Male adolescents (14-17 years of age) were recruited within 48 hr of arrival at a juvenile detention facility and were administered psychometric measures of anger (Novaco Anger Scale) and depressio

Neighborhood Profiles and Associations with Coping Behaviors among Low-Income Youth.

Extant research has typically examined neighborhood characteristics in isolation using variable-centered approaches; however, there is reason to believe that perceptions of the neighborhood environment influence each other, requiring the use of person-centered approaches to study these relationships. The present study sought to determine profiles of youth that differ in their perceptions of their neighborhoods and objective neighborhood characteristics, and whether these profiles are associated with youth coping. Participants were low-income, African American youth (N= 733; 51.0% female, M age

The Temporal Relationship Between Faulty Gambling Cognitions and Gambling Severity in Young Adults.

Disordered gambling in young adults is hypothesized as being related to mistaken gambling-related cognitions. Few studies have examined the temporal order of this relationship using longitudinal data. The purpose of this study is to understand the directionality of the relationship between gambling cognitions and gambling severity in a longitudinal sample of young adults. Young adults (N = 578), initially aged 18-21 years, completed the Manitoba Longitudinal Survey of Young Adults at two time points approximately 2-3 years apart. Measures of beliefs about randomness related to gambling and gam

Are psychology university student gamblers representative of non-university students and general gamblers? A comparative analysis.

Students recruited from psychology undergraduate university populations are commonly used in psychology research, including gambling studies. However, the extent to which the use of this subpopulation produces findings that can be extrapolated to other groups is questionable. The present study was designed to compare results from university-recruited psychology student gamblers to those obtained from a sample of gamblers recruited from the general population that also included students. An online survey measuring gambling behavior and Internet gambling, attitudes and knowledge about gambling a

Classes of oppositional-defiant behavior: concurrent and predictive validity.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) has components of both irritability and defiance. It remains unclear whether children with variation in these domains have different adult outcomes. This study examined the concurrent and predictive validity of classes of oppositional defiant behavior. METHODS: Latent class analysis was performed on the oppositional defiant problems scale of the Child Behavior Checklist in two samples, one in the US (the Achenbach Normative Sample, N = 2029) and one in the Netherlands (the Zuid-Holland Study, N = 2076). Pubertal timing and Mexican-origin girls' internalizing and externalizing symptoms: the influence of harsh parenting.

Early-maturing girls are at risk for internalizing and externalizing problems. Research concerning pubertal timing and mental health among Mexican Americans or the influence of parenting behaviors on these relations has been scarce. This study addressed these gaps. This was a prospective examination of 362 Mexican-origin girls and their mothers in 3 waves of data. Measures included girls' self-report of pubertal development and girls' and mothers' report of maternal harsh parenting and daughters' mental health. Using structural equation modeling, we examined whether pubertal timing in 5th grad

Amphetamine stereotypy, the basal ganglia, and the "selection problem".

Amphetamine and other stimulant drugs induce stereotyped head movements in rats, which interfere with normal goal-directed behavior. However, rats given access to food while intoxicated learn to suppress these movements in order to feed. This suggests that the suppression of stereotypy is an instrumentally learned response reinforced by the ingestion of food. Consistent with this interpretation, rats learn to suppress stereotyped head movements when intraoral infusions of milk are made contingent on maintaining a stationary head position, but not when such infusions are given noncontingently.

Manic symptoms and behavioral dysregulation in youth with velocardiofacial syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome).

Mania and bipolar disorder have been reported in adolescents and adults with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS; also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome). Children with VCFS have a high prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may constitute a risk factor for the eventual development of bipolar disorder in this population. Therefore, we sought to determine whether children with VCFS exhibit more manic symptoms than community controls that also may have learning disorders and ADHD. The study population consisted of 86 children with VCFS and 36 community controls from ag
