INTRODUCTION: Military forces have long supported epidemic and pandemic response, offering rapid mobilization, logistics, and operational capacity in challenging environments. Their roles-from building treatment centers and transporting supplies to enforcing quarantines-were especially visible during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite abundant case-specific literature, no broad synthesis has examined operational contributions, ethical dilemmas, coordination mechanisms, and long-term effects on health systems.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone launched its COVID-19 vaccination in March 2021 and achieved 73.2% full coverage among individuals aged 12 and older by December 2022. In October 2022, the country introduced the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for 10-year-old girls, leveraging infrastructure and lessons from the COVID-19 vaccine deployment. We conducted a COVID-19 vaccine post-introduction evaluation (cPIE) to document best practices, assess impact on routine immunization, and identify key levers that supported HPV vaccine rollout, and recommendations for future pandemic preparedness.

Conventional white light endoscopy (WLE) has limited sensitivity for detecting subtle gastrointestinal lesions, leading to missed diagnoses and interval cancers. Advanced imaging modalities, including narrow band imaging (NBI), linked color imaging (LCI), blue laser imaging (BLI), autofluorescence imaging (AFI), and artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems, have been developed to enhance lesion detection, characterization, and diagnostic confidence. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines,

This review synthesizes global trends, persistent challenges, and actionable pathways for overhauling public mental health systems, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thematic analysis of our review revealed that mental health disorders now affect nearly one in eight people worldwide, yet up to 75% of those in LMICs receive no treatment due to stigma, underfunding, workforce shortages, and fragmented systems, perpetuating a widening "treatment and care gap." Social inequities, harmful cultural norms, conflict, climate change, and gender disparities further amp

Syndromic surveillance now forms an integral part of the surveillance for a wide range of hazards in many countries. Establishing syndromic surveillance systems can be difficult due to the many different sources of data that can be used, cost pressures, the importance of data security, and the presence of different (and rapidly evolving) technologies. Here we describe major points in the development of the UK Health Security Agency English real-time syndromic surveillance service over its first 2 decades (1998 to 2018). We identify the key wider themes that we believe are important in ensuring

Background/Objectives: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) place an excessive strain on health systems in disaster-affected settings and may lead to a parallel public health emergency lasting months or years after a disaster. Although NCDs are increasingly recognized as a major challenge in disasters and humanitarian emergencies, a dedicated and standardized response plan is missing, as well as a shortage of evidence-based guidelines for NCD management in theses contexts. Over the years, Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) have traditionally been deployed to manage acute conditions such as trauma and

Background/Objective: Pressure ulcers are a serious clinical problem associated with high morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs, especially in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Existing risk assessment tools, such as the Braden Score, are often inadequate in ICU patients and have poor discriminatory power between classes. This increases the need for more sensitive, predictive and integrative systems. The aim of this study was to classify pressure ulcer stages (Stages I-IV) with high accuracy using machine learning algorithms using demographic, clinical and laboratory data of ICU patients

Since its publication in 1950, the Biology of Human Starvation, which describes the classic longitudinal Minnesota Experiment of semistarvation and refeeding in healthy young men, has been the undisputed source of scientific reference about the impact of long-term food deprivation on human physiology and behavior. It has been a guide in developing famine and refugee relief programs for international agencies, in exploring the effects of food deprivation on the cognitive and social functioning of those with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and in gaining insights into metabolic adaptations

Acute bronchiolitis is a leading cause of pediatric hospital admissions, particularly during winter months, placing significant pressure on healthcare systems. Currently, the BROSJOD scale allows for severity stratification based on clinical variables. However, the incorporation of biomarkers could improve predictive capacity. The main purpose of this study is to analyze whether adrenomedullin (MR-proADM) can serve as a predictor of severity and prognosis in patients with bronchiolitis. A single-center, prospective, observational cohort study was conducted over two consecutive epidemic periods

As the Age-Friendly Health Systems (AFHS) movement enters a new phase of policy integration, hospitals face a pivotal moment. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Age Friendly Hospital Measure has created regulatory conditions necessary for hospital systems to institute high-quality, personalized care for older adults. As the CMS is expected to transition from pay-for-reporting to pay-for-performance for age-friendly care in the coming years, health systems must urgently move beyond reporting compliance toward true care redesign. The authors highlight three interrelated st

Microbial genetic resources (MGRs) play a significant role in global ecological stability and in the development of modern biotechnology. In this context, in situ conservation strategies are essential to preserve the ecological interactions of the vast majority of non-culturable microorganisms, while ex situ conservation strategies ensure their availability in biobanks under controlled standards. This book compiles and systematizes the main strategies, methodological criteria, and experimental protocols aimed at the conservation of MGRs. In particular, effective methodologies for the conservat

Artificial intelligence (AI) is demonstrating very successful applications in orthopaedics, ranging from medical imaging interpretation and risk prediction to surgical planning and post operative monitoring. Yet, many AI systems remain difficult to trust in real-world clinical workflows because they are often optimized for standalone accuracy rather than clinically useable transparency, human AI teamwork, and safe escalation when the AI models are uncertain. Experts-in-the-loop explainability re frames explainable AI(XAI) as a workflow capability; orthopaedic surgeons, musculoskeletal radiolog

Complex forensic DNA mixtures remain challenging to interpret, especially when contributor proportions are highly imbalanced or when the mixture involves the same cell type. Single-cell isolation strategies have provided a novel methodological approach for overcoming these technical limitations. This review provides a summary of recent advances in single-cell isolation techniques for complex forensic DNA mixtures. It covers three major categories of techniques: micromanipulation and laser capture microdissection (LCM); fluorescence‑activated cell sorting (FACS) paired with imaging flow cytomet

Amino acid metabolism has emerged as a critical nexus linking tumor cell nutrient acquisition with immune microenvironmental regulation, providing a rich source of druggable targets for cancer therapy. Tumor cells engage in fierce metabolic competition with immune cells for key amino acids, including glutamine, arginine, tryptophan, and methionine, thereby establishing an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Over the past decade, therapeutic strategies targeting this metabolic axis have evolved from preclinical proof-of-concept to active clinical development across multiple biotechnology
