More than 60% of the adult US population now meets the criteria for being overweight or obese. Gastric bypass surgery has become a popular and effective way to combat this medical problem. Despite the success of these procedures, they are associated with many complications, including malnutrition, neurological compromise, and vitamin deficiency. Research has determined that even with multivitamin supplementation for life, a large percentage of bypass patients develop vitamin deficiencies. Using a multilayer membrane system and human horny layer the difference in the penetration of salicylic acid (SA) and its sodium (Na-S) and choline (Ch-S) salts from topical formulations was studied. It was found Na-S and Ch-S were markedly accumulated in the first membrane of the three layer membrane system used. In contrast, a rapid penetration into all three membranes was observed when SA was used. Similar penetration profiles were obtained in human horny layer. Hence, the use of the salts of SA appears to be more suitable for the application as keratolytic.

The advantages and limitations, theory, and factors in the use of electric current to deliver drugs across the skin are discussed. Application of the technique in the delivery of local anaesthetics, antibiotics/antibacterials, mydriatics, vinca alkaloids, non-electrolytes, biogenic amines, peptides, and other agents is reviewed. It is concluded that the method alone, or in combination with phonophoresis (delivery via ultrasonic perturbation), offers considerable scope in the transdermal delivery of drugs.

Experimental data on the uptake of two test drugs by powdered Amoco PX-21 and Norit A activated charcoals in stirred-batch tests indicate that the rate of uptake by the Amoco charcoal is equal to, or higher than, the uptake rate by Norit A. In contrast to the conjecture of Medema [1], the superactive Amoco charcoal is not kinetically inferior to Norit A. The superactive charcoal remains highly recommended for antidotal uses.

This study explores three binary natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) at high pressures.
