Evolutionary dynamics and virulence factor variability in invasive Streptococcus pyogenes in Norway, 2017-2023.

Invasive infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (iGAS) have increased in Europe over the past decade, with a marked upsurge after the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we examined whether the increase in iGAS infections in Norway was associated with the spread of variants that had acquired new virulence factors. A collection of 1,163 iGAS isolates submitted to the National Reference Laboratory between January 2017 and April 2023, representing 87% of all cases recorded by the Norwegian Surveillance System for Infectious Diseases, was analyzed by whole genome sequencing. Resistance to one or more an

Bacterial skin colonization with a specific Cutibacterium avidum clade as a risk factor for periprosthetic joint infections-a multicenter study.

Cutibacterium avidum is increasingly recognized as a causative agent of periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), yet data on its pathogenic potential and distinguishing features from commensal strains remain limited. In this multicenter study, we compared 11 C. avidum isolates from PJIs with 32 isolates from healthy skin collected across four European hospitals. We investigated phylogenetic relationships, antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm formation, and bacterial fitness. Phylogenomic analysis revealed two main clades within the C. avidum population. All PJI isolates belonged exclusively to Cl

Nasal Colonizing Vancomycin-Resistant and Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus Among Admitted Patients: A Hospital Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Staphylococcus aureus colonizing the nasal cavity poses a potential risk for infections. Vancomycin is a primary treatment for invasive infections caused by penicillin and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). However, reports of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) have emerged, highlighting it as a high-priority pathogen requiring attention. There is limited information on the epidemiology of VRSA and vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) from the Sidama regional state. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of VRSA and VISA among S. aureus colonizing patients

Analysis of serotype distribution and characteristics of nonhemolytic and nonpigmented strains among group B Streptococcus isolates in a southern Taiwan local hospital.

PURPOSE: Group B streptococci (GBS) are Gram-positive bacteria that are a leading cause of neonatal infections. Most invasive isolates are β-hemolytic, and hemolytic activity is critical for GBS virulence. Although nonhemolytic GBS strains are occasionally isolated, they are often thought to be attenuated in virulence. Recent studies have observed that many nonhemolytic and nonpigmented (NH/NP) strains originated from invasive infections, including bacteremia and meningitis, in neonates or adults. The mutations causing the NH/NP phenotype are predominantly localized in the cyl operon and abx1

Non-cefazolin antibiotic prophylaxis is associated with higher rates of elbow periprosthetic joint infection.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a common source of failure following elbow arthroplasty. Perioperative prophylactic antibiotics are considered standard of care. However, there are no data regarding the comparative efficacy of various antibiotics in the prevention of PJI for elbow arthroplasty. Previous studies in shoulder, hip, and knee arthroplasty have demonstrated higher rates of PJI with administration of non-cefazolin antibiotics. The elbow has higher rates of PJI than other joints. Therefore, this study evaluated whether perioperative antibiotic choice affects rates o

Dysgonomonas mossii Strain Shenzhen WH 0221, a New Member of the Genus Dysgonomonas Isolated from the Blood of a Patient with Diabetic Nephropathy, Exhibits Multiple Antibiotic Resistance.

Herein, we present a new bacterial strain isolated from infected blood of a patient with diabetic nephropathy. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry failed to identify the strain. 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the highest similarity (>99.5%) with genus Dysgonomonas, but the strain could not be distinguished from Dysgonomonas oryzarvi and Dysgonomonas mossii. Whole genome sequencing, followed by phylogenetic analysis and average nucleotide identity (>95%) analysis, confirmed that the new strain represented Dysgonomonas mossii, leading it to be named Dysg

Emergence of Multi-Drug Resistance and Its Association With Uncommon Serotypes of Streptococcus agalactiae Isolated From Non-neonatal Patients in Thailand.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) or Streptococcus agalactiae is an opportunistic pathogen that causes serious illness in newborns, pregnant women, and adults. However, insufficient detection methods and disease prevention programs have contributed to an increase in the incidence and fatality rates associated with this pathogen in non-neonatal patients. This study aimed to investigate factors of the observed increased incidence by investigation of serotype distribution, virulence factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from invasive GBS disease among non-neonatal patients in Thailand.
