"There's no better medicine than my outdoors": understanding the importance of physical activity in rural and remote First Nations communities in Northern British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: While Canadian First Nations communities actively participate in sport, cultural, and land-based activities, they face various barriers to physical activity. Despite calls for increased support at all government levels, access to suitable programs for those with chronic conditions in particular remains limited. As part of an ongoing partnership between the University of British Columbia and Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS), this qualitative study aimed to explore current values, perceived barriers, and potential facilitators of physical activity among people living with chroni

Prediction of fluoride contamination in groundwater of Nigeria using a weighted ensemble machine-learning framework.

Fluoride (F-) contamination of groundwater remains a significant health risk in Nigeria, affecting rural and urban communities. This study examines the spatial distribution and factors influencing F- levels using a weighted ensemble machine learning model to forecast high-risk areas and estimate exposed populations. The primary factor controlling geogenic F- is the aquifer lithology, with the highest F- levels found in groundwater from crystalline basement complexes and sedimentary sandstones. The problem is exacerbated in dry regions, including semiarid and arid zones, where evaporation rates

Potential of intranasal delivery of human mesenchymal stem cells and extracellular vesicles for stroke therapy.

Cerebral ischemic stroke, caused by interrupted cerebral blood flow, remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide. Current FDA-approved therapies-intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and mechanical thrombectomy-are constrained by narrow time windows (4.5-24 h) and limited accessibility. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for neurorestoration, yet their therapeutic efficacy is hindered by poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration and systemic entrapment. Increasing evidence indicates that MSCs exert their therapeutic eff

Trematode recolonization in first intermediate snail hosts after large-scale stream restoration.

BACKGROUND: Parasite recolonization and succession following disturbance are inherently linked to the recovery of free-living species, yet patterns governing parasite recolonization in freshwater ecosystems remain largely unexplored. The Emscher River in western Germany was recently restored after a century of degradation as an open sewer system. As only few aquatic organisms persisted under these conditions, free-living organisms and parasites recolonized the system following restoration, providing a unique opportunity to study early successional dynamics. METHODS: Trematodes infecting first

The TREM1-AQP4 axis mediates neuroinflammatory injury and brain edema after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Secondary brain injury following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a major factor contributing to poor patient outcomes, with neuroinflammation and cerebral edema representing core pathological mechanisms. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM1), a major inflammatory amplifier in innate immunity, remains poorly understood in SAH regarding its specific role, cellular targets, and association with aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a key molecule involved in cerebral edema. To determine how TREM1 governs neuroinflammatory injury after experimental SAH and to investigate whether it ac

Let's trace: Leishmaniasis in Tuscany (Italy), tracking, research, analysis and continuous evaluation - a retrospective study protocol on underreporting of human cases, geolocation and public health implications.

INTRODUCTION: Leishmaniases are a group of vector-borne diseases caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, which are renowned for increasing global spread due to factors like climate change, globalisation, urbanisation and migration. Leishmaniasis is classified as a neglected tropical disease but is endemic in several areas of the Mediterranean Basin, including Italy, where Leishmania infantum is most involved as the parasite, phlebotomine sand fly as the vector and dog as the principal reservoir. Effective surveillance of communicable infectious diseases is a goal worldwide for organisatio

Scoping review of military veterans involved in the criminal legal system and their health and healthcare: 5-year update and map to the Veterans-Sequential Intercept Model.

BACKGROUND: A previous scoping review of legal-involved veterans' health and healthcare (1947-2017) identified studies and their limitations. Given the influx of literature published recently, this study aimed to update the previous review and map articles to the Veterans-Sequential Intercept Model (V-SIM) - a conceptual model used by key partners, including Veterans Health Administration, veteran advocates, criminal justice practitioners, and local governments to identify intercept points in the criminal legal system where resources and programming can be provided. Are pregnancy outcomes affected by the lack of legal status? A demographic study based on 850,288 live births in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: In the context of increased global mobility, it is fundamental to understand migrants' needs and how governments can ensure equal health opportunities for both regular and irregular migrants simply by applying low-cost primary health care measures. To identify health issues in which to intervene, this study analysed the impact of a mother's lack of legal status, together with available biological and socioeconomic characteristics, on four indicators of adverse perinatal outcomes in Switzerland. METHODS: Based on the exhaustive records of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO)

Attenuation of Getah Virus by a Single Amino Acid Substitution at Residue 253 of the E2 Protein that Might Be Part of a New Heparan Sulfate Binding Site on Alphaviruses.

The emergence of new epidemic variants of alphaviruses poses a public health risk. It is associated with adaptive mutations that often cause increased pathogenicity. Getah virus (GETV), a neglected and re-emerging mosquito-borne alphavirus, poses threat to many domestic animals and probably even humans. At present, the underlying mechanisms of GETV pathogenesis are not well defined. We identified a residue in the E2 glycoprotein that is critical for viral adsorption to cultured cells and pathogenesis in vivo. Viruses containing an arginine instead of a lysine at residue 253 displayed enhanced

Development and Evaluation of Active Case Detection Methods to Support Visceral Leishmaniasis Elimination in India.

As India moves toward the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem, comprehensive timely case detection has become increasingly important, in order to reduce the period of infectivity and control outbreaks. During the 2000s, localized research studies suggested that a large percentage of VL cases were never reported in government data. However, assessments conducted from 2013 to 2015 indicated that 85% or more of confirmed cases were eventually captured and reported in surveillance data, albeit with significant delays before diagnosis. Based on methods developed du

Decline in Receipt of Vaccines by Medicare Beneficiaries During the COVID-19 Pandemic - United States, 2020.

On March 13, 2020, the United States declared a national emergency concerning the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak (1). In response, many state and local governments issued shelter-in-place or stay-at-home orders, restricting nonessential activities outside residents' homes (2). CDC initially issued guidance recommending postponing routine adult vaccinations, which was later revised to recommend continuing to administer routine adult vaccines (3). In addition, factors such as disrupted operations of health care facilities and safety concerns regarding exposure to SARS-CoV-2, …

Gendered health systems: evidence from low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Gender is often neglected in health systems, yet health systems are not gender neutral. Within health systems research, gender analysis seeks to understand how gender power relations create inequities in access to resources, the distribution of labour and roles, social norms and values, and decision-making. This paper synthesises findings from nine studies focusing on four health systems domains, namely human resources, service delivery, governance and financing. It provides examples of how a gendered and/or intersectional gender approach can be applied by researchers in a range of

Health impacts related to urban and transport planning: A burden of disease assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Until now, estimates of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) have mainly been produced on national or regional levels. These general estimates, however, are less useful for city governments who have to take decisions on local scales. To address this gap, we focused on the city-level burden of disease (BD) due to exposures affected by urban and transport planning. We conducted a BD assessment using the Urban and Transport Planning Health Impact Assessment (UTOPHIA) tool to estimate annual preventable morbidity and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) under compliance with internat

[Phylogenetic, pathogenetic fundamentals and a role of clinical biochemistry in classification of arterial hypertension].

Classifications of the clinical forms of arterial hypertension (AH) are aimed at differentiating it on etiological grounds; we propose a classification that is based on the common pathogenesis of hydrodynamic pressure elevation in the intravascular pool of the intercellular medium, i.e. arterial blood pressure (BP). We believe that there are only three options for hydrodynamic pressure elevation in a mechanical model of the cardiovascular system: 1) a decrease in the volume of the arterial bed at a constant volume of intravascular fluid; 2) an increase in the volume of intravascular fluid at a
