Minimum Displacement in Existing Moment (MDEM)- A new supervised learning algorithm by incrementally constructing the moments of the underlying classes.

We introduce a supervised learning method that classifies each test point by selecting the class for which its inclusion causes minimum displacement of the class's existing n-th central moment. After each such inclusion, the n-th central moment of the corresponding class is updated by some incremental calculations in constant time, i.e., each class evolves gradually and changes its definition incrementally after the inclusion of every new data point. We then use k-fold and stratified k-fold cross validation techniques to compare the performance of our proposed model with various state of the a

Prediction of functional neural circuits in caenorhabditis elegans based on overlapping community detection.

The identification of functional neural circuits is crucial for understanding brain functions. However, experimental methods are often labor-intensive and resource-intensive. In this study, we modified the BIGCLAM algorithm to detect overlapping communities in directed and weighted networks and applied it to the neural networks of hermaphrodite and male Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Given the high similarity in connotation between network communities and functional neural circuits, we can predict functional neural circuits by detecting communities within the neural networks, thereby red

Atlas-independent brain connectome analysis at voxel-level granularity: graph convolutional networks for etiology classification in newborns.

Early identification of altered brain networks in neonates at risk for neurodevelopmental impairments is critical for timely intervention and improving outcomes. This study explores the potential of graph neural networks (GNNs) applied to structural brain connectomes at the voxel level granularity to classify neonatal connectomes by their underlying etiology: 51 children with congenital heart disease (CHD), 100 children born very preterm (PB), and 43 children with spina bifida aperta (SBA). Leveraging the flexibility of voxel-level parcellation, we captured fine-grained connectomic differences

Comparing computer vision models for detecting chronic pleurisy in pigs.

This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of three convolutional neural network models within a computer vision system (CVS) for detecting chronic pleurisy in pig carcasses compared to official meat inspection. Knowledge about the true prevalence of chronic pleurisy is important for the pig producer, because this condition is negatively associated with productivity. Registering chronic pleurisy is no longer considered a priority by the Danish competent authorities, as such, the abattoir mainly uses the information for quality assurance. The performance was evaluated using latent class mo

Label-free diagnostic procedure for hirschsprung's disease to detect intestinal mucosal characteristics of aganglionosis by Raman spectroscopy with optimized decision algorithms.

PURPOSE: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is an intestinal disorder characterized by the absence of nerve cells in parts of the intestinal tract. The definitive diagnosis is confirmed by a full-thickness rectal biopsy to verify the absence of ganglion cells. However, incomplete removal often causes post-operative complications. To establish an optical biopsy technique for targeting mucosa with aganglionosis of HSCR and to confirm its capability by another optical imaging modality and histopathology. METHODS: Raman spectroscopy (RS) is an emerging technique in tissue diagnosis without staining th

Machine learning model to classify chronic leg wounds and identify pyoderma gangrenosum.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Chronic wounds represent a significant economic and personal burden. For their successful treatment, the causes must be known and treated. Wounds caused by pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), a rare inflammatory skin disease, are often misdiagnosed. This study, therefore, aims to develop a machine learning model capable of differentiating PG from other wound types, focusing on chronic leg wounds to address this diagnostic challenge. METHODS: We used 3674 wound photographs from three specialised wound centres with the four most common types of foot and leg ulcers and the rare inflamma

Electrocardiographic sex index: a continuous representation of sex.

Clinical risk calculators consider sex as a binary variable. However, sex is a complex trait with anatomic, physiologic, and metabolic attributes that are not easily summarized in this manner [1]. We propose a continuous representation of sex, the ECG Sex Index (ESI), derived via artificial intelligence analyses of electrocardiograms (ECG-AI).We used an ECG repository at Wake Forest Baptist Health (Winston-Salem, NC) to develop a convolutional neural network-based ECG-AI model to detect sex from standard 12-lead ECGs. We utilized a rank-ordered transformation of the outcomes of ECG-AI to creat

Detecting soil-transmitted helminth and Schistosoma mansoni eggs in Kato-Katz stool smear microscopy images: A comprehensive in- and out-of-distribution evaluation of YOLOv7 variants.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) infections remain significant public health concerns in tropical and subtropical regions. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have already shown promising accuracy in identifying STH and S. mansoni eggs in the same, in-distribution (ID) settings. However, their performance in real-world, out-of-distribution (OOD) scenarios, characterized by variations in image capture devices and the appearance of previously unseen egg types, has not been thoroughly investigated. Assessing the robustness of DCNNs under thes

Automatic rehabilitation exercise task assessment of stroke patients based on wearable sensors with a lightweight multichannel 1D-CNN model.

Approximately 75% of stroke survivors have movement dysfunction. Rehabilitation exercises are capable of improving physical coordination. They are mostly conducted in the home environment without guidance from therapists. It is impossible to provide timely feedback on exercises without suitable devices or therapists. Human action quality assessment in the home setting is a challenging topic for current research. In this paper, a low-cost HREA system in which wearable sensors are used to collect upper limb exercise data and a multichannel 1D-CNN framework is used to automatically assess action
