Real-time dynamic monitoring of rockfalls with PTZ cameras.

Rockfall is a prevalent geological hazard threatening lives and infrastructure. Beyond static assessment, real-time dynamic monitoring is crucial to capture sudden events, ensuring timely warning and risk mitigation. Leveraging low cost, flexible deployment, and high spatiotemporal resolution, PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras combined with deep learning provide a potential solution. However, the small size, background similarity, rapid and complex motion of rockfall objects present significant challenges for reliable monitoring. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes a rockfall detection and t

Temporal precision and accuracy in schizophrenia: an exploratory study.

Time perception abnormalities have long been described in schizophrenia, yet the precise nature of these deficits remains unclear. Most studies have examined temporal accuracy or precision in isolation, and few have included clinically stable outpatient samples or systematically accounted for antipsychotic medication effects. This study examined temporal accuracy, trial-to-trial precision, and within-session adjustment in 45 clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia and 44 matched healthy controls using both retrospective and prospective verbal time estimation paradigms across three int…

Autonomous navigation and active perception with complex articulated AUVs.

With the recent progress in underwater robotics, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are increasing their mission capacity and range of applications operating in proximity to underwater infrastructure and closer to the wave zone for data collection and environmental monitoring. Future applications will necessitate more complex articulated systems that will be tasked to operate with increased safety, efficiency, and capacity. In this article, we present a novel motion planning framework for enabling, for the first time, safe autonomous navigation and active perception in high-dimensional arti

The Impact of Text Anchoring Methods on Cognitive Load and User Experience in Virtual Reality.

Textual information in virtual reality (VR) museums is an important source for users to understand exhibit content. The anchoring method of textual information may affect information visibility, exhibit occlusion, and visual attention allocation, thereby influencing users' cognitive load and user experience. However, there is still a lack of systematic research on how different anchoring methods affect users' information acquisition, reading processing, and experiential perception. Therefore, we compared 5 anchoring methods- attached, view-facing, pop-up, handheld, and fusion-in a VR museum, a

The Crime of Vehicular Homicide in Italy: Trends in Alcohol and Drug Use in Fatal Road Accidents in Lazio Region from 2018 to 2024.

In Italy, the law on road homicide (Law no. 41/2016) introduced specific provisions for drivers who cause severe injuries or death to a person due to the violation of the Highway Code. The use of alcohol or drugs while driving constitutes an aggravating circumstance of the offence and provides for a tightening of penalties. Our study aims to report on the analysis performed on blood samples collected between January 2018 and December 2024 from drivers convicted of road homicide and who tested positive for alcohol and/or drugs. The majority of the involved subjects were males belonging to the 1

3D Intelligent Cloaked Vehicle Equipped with Thousand-Level Reconfigurable Full-Polarization Metasurfaces.

A crucial aspect in shielding a variety of advanced electronic devices from electromagnetic detection involves controlling the flow of electromagnetic waves, akin to invisibility cloaks. Decades ago, the exploration of transformation optics heralded the dawn of modern invisibility cloaks, which has stimulated immense interest across various physical scenarios. However, most prior research is simplified to low-dimensional and stationary hidden objects, limiting their practical applicability in a dynamically changing world. This study develops a 3D large-scale intelligent cloak capable of remain

Brain Activity Reflects Subjective Response to Delayed Input When Using an Electromyography-Controlled Robot.

In various experimental settings, electromyography (EMG) signals have been used to control robots. EMG-based robot control requires intrinsic parameters for control, which makes it difficult for users to understand the input protocol. When a proper input is not provided, the response time of the system varies; as such, the user's subjective delay should be investigated regardless of the actual delay. In this study, we investigated the influence of the subjective perception of delay on brain activation. Brain recordings were taken while subjects used EMG signals to control a robot hand, which r

Blockade of the kinin B1 receptor counteracts the depressive-like behaviour and mechanical allodynia in ovariectomised mice.

Menopause is related to a decline in ovarian oestrogen production, affecting the perception of the somatosensory stimuli, changing the immune-inflammatory systems, and triggering depressive symptoms. It has been demonstrated that the inhibition of the kinin B1 and B2 receptors (B1R and B2R) prevented the depressive-like behaviour and the mechanical allodynia that was induced by immune-inflammatory mediators in mice. However, there is no evidence regarding the role of the kinin receptors in the depressive-like and nociceptive behaviour in female mice that were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy

Examining physiological and perceptual consequences of noise exposure.

The consequences of noise exposure on the auditory system are not entirely understood. In animals, noise exposure causes selective synaptopathy-an uncoupling of auditory nerve fibers from sensory cells-mostly in fibers that respond to high sound levels. Synaptopathy can be measured physiologically in animals, but a direct relationship between noise exposure and synaptopathy in humans has yet to be proven. Sources of variability, such as age, indirect measures of noise exposure, and comorbid auditory disorders, obfuscate attempts to find concrete relationships between noise exposure, synaptopat

ERP adaptation provides direct evidence for early mirror neuron activation in the inferior parietal lobule.

Mirror neuron systems are frequently investigated by assessing overlapping brain activity during observation and execution of actions; however, distinct neuronal subpopulations may be activated that fall below the spatial resolution of magnetic resonance techniques. This shortfall can be resolved using repetition suppression paradigms that identify physiological adaptation processes caused by repeated activation of identical neuronal circuits. Here, event-related potentials were used to investigate the time course of mirror neuron circuit activation using repetition suppression within and acro
