Indicators that large-amplitude water-table fluctuations control natural source zone pathways.

Natural source zone depletion (NSZD) has become central to the management of hydrocarbon-contaminated sites, and the methods established to quantify it rely on the gaseous or thermal expression of biodegradation in the vadose zone. These methods were developed in temperate settings, where the water table fluctuates modestly and typically where the LNAPL remains within reach of the air phase. Tropical and subtropical environments differ in two respects that bear directly on this premise: they experience large-amplitude seasonal water-table fluctuations, and their soils sustain high natural CO₂

Decoding plant volatile stress signals across scales: from molecular responses to ecosystem dynamics.

Plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent one of the most dynamic and integrative biochemical signaling systems linking molecular plant stress responses to ecosystem-level processes. This review provides an integrative cross-scale framework for understanding the biochemical pathways, regulatory networks, ecological functions, and technological applications of stress-induced volatile emissions. At the molecular and cellular levels, VOC emissions are regulated through complex enzymatic and hormonal pathways involving jasmonates, salicylates, ethylene, and abscisic acid, enabling plants t

Effects of Temperature on Life-History Traits of Paralipsa gularis (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a Newly Emerged Maize Pest from the Border Areas Between China and Southeast Asian Countries.

Paralipsa gularis (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a storage pest native to Southeast Asia that has since spread to Northern Europe, North America, and other parts of Asia. In recent years, it has become an increasingly destructive pest in maize agroecosystems along the China-Southeast Asia border region, causing severe damage. Temperature is a key environmental factor influencing insect development, fecundity, and distribution, yet its effects on P. gularis remain unclear. In this study, we used an age-stage two-sex life table to evaluate the effects of temperature on the development dura

Uterine Vulnerability to Environmental PM2.5: Chronic Wood Smoke Exposure Alters Morphogenesis Before First Pregnancy.

Chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) derived from residential wood combustion is a major environmental health concern in southern Chile and other cold-climate regions. Although PM2.5 has been linked to adverse reproductive outcomes, it remains unclear whether sustained exposure induces pregestational uterine alterations that compromise reproductive competence before the first pregnancy. This study evaluated the effects of chronic wood smoke-derived PM2.5 exposure on uterine morphology and molecular markers in nulliparous rats. A two-generation exposure model was used to assess c

Genetic diversity and camphor profiling of Curcuma caesia roxb.: identification of elite genotypes and in silico prediction of gastroprotective mechanisms.

Curcuma caesia Roxb (Black Turmeric) is an underexploited medicinal species with recognized ethnobotanical use in gastrointestinal disorders. This study integrates morphological characterization, validated camphor quantification, and computational anti-ulcer evaluation across 21 genotypes collected from diverse Indian agro-climatic zones. Genotypes were cultivated at Coimbatore and Bhavanisagar and characterized using DUS guidelines. Significant morphological variation was observed in plant height (27.81-107.08 cm), rhizome traits, and essential oil yield (0.20%-0.62%), indicating high genetic

Habitat-shifting predatory and herbivorous reef fishes exhibit spatial partitioning despite shared biophysical drivers of seascape use.

CONTEXT: Climate change and anthropogenic stressors are degrading coastal biogenic habitats, disrupting the vital pathways fish use to shift from nearshore nurseries to offshore reef environments. Although fishes are critical for ecosystem health, spatial management rarely accounts for the interconnectedness of fish habitat needs across their life cycle. OBJECTIVES: To examine and compare drivers of habitat use for subadult size classes of five habitat-shifting fishes from two feeding guilds: mesopredators and herbivores. To assess the multi-species suitability of existing management zones.

HIV broadly neutralizing antibodies for children: implementation barriers in low-income settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (bNAbs) represent a transformative frontier for the prevention, treatment, and potential remission of HIV in children. Given that over 95% of the pediatric population living with or at risk for HIV resides in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), prioritizing trials and implementation in these regions is an ethical and clinical imperative. This review identifies the primary structural, biological, and regulatory barriers that must be addressed to ensure equitable global access to bNAb-based interventions. RECENT FINDINGS:

Silent witnesses: basidiomycota as forensic biomarkers in human decomposition.

Although forensic mycology has primarily focused on microscale Ascomycota and successional patterns, this review emphasizes the underexplored potential of macroscopic Basidiomycota as biomarkers in decomposition ecology. These taxa require quantitative validation prior to application. We present a conceptual synthesis and hypothesis-generating framework, rather than a formal systematic review. We did not utilize pre-registered criteria, formal protocols, or bias assessment. Consequently, conclusions are provisional and intended to encourage empirical validation. Evolving behavioral dynamics and environmental risk in cholera epidemics.

Cholera, an infectious disease transmitted by water, is a harmful and sometimes life-threatening public health issue in a significant number of poor and middle-income nations all over the world, where inadequate water and sanitation infrastructure, together with noticeable climate variability, contribute to regular and frequently severe outbreaks. Consequently, it is important to understand the interplay between environmental risks and human decision-making in exacerbating the disease burden in our society. This work develops and analyzes a seasonally driven cholera model that integrates with

Different responses of greenhouse gas emissions to biochar-based silicate fertilizer across rice seasons in a rice-producing region of China.

Rice paddies are a significant agricultural land type and a notable source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making mitigation efforts critical for ecological sustainability. Both steel slag and biochar mitigate GHG emissions, and their co-application may enhance mitigation through complementary mechanisms; however, evaluations of their combined effects remain limited. This study explored the innovative use of a biochar-based silicate fertilizer (BSF), created by combining steel slag and biochar, in a field experiment across two rice-growing seasons. By measuring GHG fluxes, soil properties,
