"Far More than Just a Prescription": Focus Groups With U.S. Family Planning Providers and Staff About Integrating PrEP for HIV Prevention Into Their Work.

BACKGROUND: Cisgender women in the United States use pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention at lower rates relative to other groups. Advocacy groups and patients identify family planning clinics as the preferred sites to lead PrEP implementation for women in the United States. However, limited qualitative exploration exists of U.S. family planning practitioners' attitudes toward integrating PrEP into their work. METHODS: We conducted qualitative focus groups with a convenience sample of family planning clinicians, counselors, and clinic managers to explore barriers and facilitator

Validation of a Brief Internalized Sex-work Stigma Scale among Female Sex Workers in Kenya.

Female sex workers (FSW) often face severe stigma and discrimination and are extremely vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. In the fields of HIV and mental health, internalized stigma is associated with poor health care engagement. Due to the lack of valid, standardized measures for internalized sex work-related stigma, its dimensions and role are not well-understood. This study aimed to validate the six-item Internalized AIDS-Related Stigma Scale adapted to capture internalized sex work-related stigma by examining the scale's psychometric properties and performance amo

Control of sexually transmitted infections and global elimination targets, South-East Asia Region.

The World Health Organization (WHO) set targets for a 90% reduction in the incidence of syphilis and gonorrhoea between 2018 and 2030. We review trends in sexually transmitted infections in the WHO South-East Asia Region to assess the feasibility of reaching these targets. Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand reported 90% or greater reductions in the incidence or prevalence of syphilis and/or gonorrhoea between 1975 and 2005. Evidence suggests that smaller, more recent reductions in trends in sexually transmitted infections in India have driven regional declines. In other countries, sexually transm

'PrEP should be for men only': Young heterosexual men's views on PrEP in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Gaps persist in HIV testing, treatment, and prevention services for men, leading to higher attributable mortality compared to women. We sought to characterise HIV prevention knowledge, risk behaviours, and interest in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among young men in rural South Africa. METHODS: We conducted interviews with HIV-negative heterosexual men which were thematically analysed to identify key themes. RESULTS: Among 31 participants, median age was 26 (IQR23-31), 77% were unemployed, 52% reported previous STI, 84% reported casual sexual partners. Men acknowledged inconsis

Predicting the diagnosis of HIV and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men using machine learning approaches.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop machine learning models and evaluate their performance in predicting HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) diagnosis based on a cohort of Australian men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: We collected clinical records of 21,273 Australian MSM during 2011-2017. We compared accuracies for predicting HIV and STIs (syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia) diagnosis using four machine learning approaches against a multivariable logistic regression (MLR) model. RESULTS: Machine learning approaches consistently outperformed MLR. Gradient boosting machine (GBM) ac

Comparative study of impulsiveness and risk behaviors among infected individuals with hepatitis C virus and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infections have chronic courses. HCV is primarily transmitted via the hematogenous route, whereas HTLV-1 is primarily transmitted sexually, although it can also be transmitted by blood. Individuals chronically infected with either HTLV-1 or HCV can differ in terms of behavioral characteristics and personality traits. This study compared the occurrence of risk behaviors and impulsivity aspects between HCV and HTLV-1 carriers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, comparative and cross-secti

"We have a stronger survival mode": exploring knowledge gaps and culturally sensitive messaging of PrEP among Latino men who have sex with men and Latina transgender women in Los Angeles, CA.

Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) and Latina transgender women (LTGW) often lack access to HIV prevention information and strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We explored knowledge gaps and culturally sensitive messaging about PrEP among HIV-negative LMSM and LTGW in Los Angeles. We recruited participants from a Latinx LGBT community-based organization. We conducted nine focus groups (n = 91 participants) with 52 LMSM and 39 LTGW. We used a rapid assessment process to create narrative reports that we analyzed using thematic analysis. Key quotes were transcribed verbatim; t

A qualitative study on intersectional stigma and sexual health among women on opioid substitution treatment in England: Implications for research, policy and practice.

RATIONALE: Women on opioid substitution treatment (WOST) are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses (HIV, Hepatitis B and C). This heightened risk is rooted in social and health inequities. Experiencing stigma is considered to have an important role in maintaining these inequities and is a barrier to promoting sexual health. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine (1) the experiences of stigma of WOST, and (2) how experiencing stigma may influence WOST' sexual health. METHOD: Twenty semi-structured interviews with WOST were conducted between Octobe

Case-control study of risk factors for incident syphilis infection among men who have sex with men in Tokyo, Japan.

INTRODUCTION: In Japan, syphilis notifications have increased. Men who have sex with men (MSM) in Tokyo have contributed substantially to the increase in syphilis notifications. We thus aimed to determine the correlates of incident syphilis among them. METHODS: MSM who attended a Tokyo clinic that serves sexual minorities were recruited in a case-control study in 2015. A case was seropositive for primary/secondary/asymptomatic syphilis at enrolment visit and seronegative at prior visit or had oral ulcers positive for Treponema pallidum DNA at enrolment. For each case, two controls seronegativ

"Strap up:" Sexual socialization and safer sex practices among African American youth in foster care.

Adolescent sexual health is often reflected through a problem-oriented lens. This serves to reinforce prevailing sexual scripts and cultural images of disenfranchised youth. Very little is known about the support young people in foster care, particularly youth of color, need to stay sexually healthy and safe. This article presents data on the sources and types of sexual socialization experiences that supported African American transitional age youth in foster care to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Predictors of Retention in an Alcohol and Risky Sex Prevention Program for Homeless Young Adults.

Homeless young adults are at risk for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and risky sexual behavior. Interventions are needed to help these young people reduce their risky behavior, but this population is often difficult to engage and retain in services. We offered a four-session AOD and risky sex reduction program to 100 participants and examined if retention in the program was predicted by a number of factors: demographics, homelessness severity, other service use, AOD behaviors, mental health symptoms, sexual risk behaviors, and readiness to change AOD and condom use. Nearly half (48%) of part

The risk environments of people who use drugs accessing two harm reduction centers in Tehran, Iran: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Iran has developed the most robust harm reduction infrastructure in the Middle East, marked by availability of low threshold methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), needle and syringe program (NSPs), and condom distribution services. However, little is known about the socially situated risk factors that make harm reduction clients-specifically those enrolled in MMT-vulnerable to relapse or continued illicit drug use. In this study, we sought to understand the "risk environment" of clients enrolled in harm reduction services in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: Through observation and in-depth

Quantifying unmet prevention needs among MSM in Europe through a multi-site bio-behavioural survey.

IntroductionThe HIV epidemic represents an important public health issue in Europe particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Global AIDS Monitoring indicators (GAM) have been widely and jointly promoted as a set of crucial standardised items to be adopted for monitoring and responding to the epidemic.MethodsThe Sialon II study, implemented in 13 European cities (2013-14), was a complex multi-centre integrated bio-behavioural cross-sectional survey targeted at MSM, with a concomitant collection of behavioural and biological (oral fluid or blood specimens) data. Rigorous sampling appro

Long-term urodynamic follow-up after external sphincterotomy in patients with spinal cord injury.

AIMS: External sphincterotomy (ES) is a therapeutic option for male spinal cord injury patients with detrusor sphincter dyssynergia. However, some patients need to change their voiding management after ES. One of the potential causes of failure is reportedly detrusor dysfunction, but long-term urodynamic follow-up data after ES is limited. In the present study, we reviewed the urodynamic data before and after ES and analyzed it for possible causes of ES failure. METHODS: A total of 37 patients who were followed up at our center for at least 5 years after ES were included. Mean follow-up perio

Bisexual and Bidirectional: Assessing the Potential for HIV Bridging in Mozambique.

African men who have sex with men (MSM) frequently, and often concurrently, have female partners, raising concerns about HIV sexual bridging. We explored potential HIV transmission in Mozambique from and to female partners of MSM focusing on preferred anal sex role and circumcision status. Data collected in a respondent-driven sampling study of MSM in 2011 in Maputo and Beira. Men who had oral or anal sex with other men 12 months prior completed a questionnaire and consented for HIV testing. Statistical analysis explored demographic/risk characteristics and associations among circumcision stat

Anatomical site distribution and genotypes of Chlamydia trachomatis infecting asymptomatic men who have sex with men in northeast Thailand.

Chlamydia trachomatis is a common agent of sexually transmitted infection, especially in asymptomatic extra-genital sites among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to investigate anatomical site distribution and genotypes of C. trachomatis from asymptomatic MSM in northeast Thailand. Specimens were collected using swabs from anorectal, oropharyngeal, and urethral sites in 346 asymptomatic MSM. C. trachomatis infection was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction and genotyping was based on sequences of the ompA gene. The results showed that infection by C. trachomatis was
