The similarities and differences in impulsivity and cognitive ability among ketamine, methadone, and non-drug users.

The study aimed to identify similarities and differences among ketamine, methadone users, and non-drug-using controls, on impulsivity, antisocial personality, and related cognitive abilities. A case-control observational design was used to compare the impulsivity and cognitive function of ketamine users (n = 51), methadone users (n=59), and controls (n=60). Antisocial personality traits and emotion states were also measured. One-way ANOVAs and planned post hoc pair-wise tests were used to analyze the data. Compared to non-drug-using controls, ketamine and methadone users had elevated scores on

A 3-Year Longitudinal Study of Risk for Bipolar Spectrum Psychopathology.

Current clinical and epidemiological research provides support for a continuum of bipolar psychopathology: a bipolar spectrum that ranges from subthreshold characteristics to clinical disorders. The present research examined risk for bipolar spectrum psychopathology at a 3-year follow-up assessment in a nonclinically ascertained sample of 112 young adults identified by the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS). Participants completed diagnostic interviews assessing bipolar psychopathology, borderline personality traits, substance use disorders, impulsivity, and psychosocial functioning. At the ori

Suicide completion in secondary mental healthcare: a comparison study between schizophrenia spectrum disorders and all other diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Suicide completion is a tragic outcome in secondary mental healthcare. However, the extent to which demographic and clinical characteristics, suicide method and service use-related factors vary across psychiatric diagnoses remains poorly understood, particularly regarding differences between 'schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD)' and 'all other diagnoses', which may have implications for suicide prevention in high risk groups. METHODS: 308 patients who died by suicide over 2007-2011 were identified from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Biomedical Research Centr

Neural response to visual sexual cues in dopamine treatment-linked hypersexuality in Parkinson's disease.

Hypersexuality with compulsive sexual behaviour is a significant source of morbidity for patients with Parkinson's disease receiving dopamine replacement therapies. We know relatively little about the pathophysiology of hypersexuality in Parkinson's disease, and it is unknown how visual sexual stimuli, similar to the portrayals of sexuality in the mainstream mass media may affect the brain and behaviour in such susceptible individuals. Here, we have studied a group of 12 patients with Parkinson's disease with hypersexuality using a functional magnetic resonance imaging block design exposing pa

Predictors of pathological gambling severity taking gender differences into account.

BACKGROUND: The current study aims to identify predictors of pathological gambling (PG) severity, taking gender differences into account, in an outpatient sample of pathological gamblers seeking treatment. METHODS: The sample for this study consisted of 103 subjects (51 women and 52 men) meeting current DSM-IV-TR criteria for PG. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to examine different risk factors (gender, age, impulsivity, sensation seeking, self-esteem) and risk markers (depression, anxiety, gambling-related thoughts, substance abuse) as predictors of PG severity. RESULTS: I

Pathologic grooming behavior: facial dermatillomania.

Dermatillomania is a pathologic grooming disorder characterized by repetitive, ritualistic, impulsive skin picking without an underlying dermatologic condition. It can lead to skin damage and distress and can affect patient function. This disorder has not received much attention in the literature, with few studies reporting treatment efficacy. Patients with dermatillomania typically present to primary care physicians and frequently are referred to dermatologists; only rarely do patients receive additional psychiatric consultation that may improve treatment efficacy and decrease morbidity. We p

An examination of the effects of stimulant medication on response inhibition: a comparison between children with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This study investigated whether methylphenidate is effective in improving response inhibition in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children with ADHD were compared with normally developing children on measures of response inhibition. Participants with ADHD were compared across two conditions--medicated and unmedicated. There was no significant difference between the inhibitory control of children with and without ADHD. Children with ADHD showed significant improvements in inhibitory control following methylphenidate. The findings of the present study contrast with

Co-occurring marijuana use is associated with medication nonadherence and nonplanning impulsivity in young adult heavy drinkers.

Few studies have examined the co-occurrence of alcohol and marijuana use in clinical samples of young adults. The present study investigated whether co-occurring marijuana use is associated with characteristics indicative of a high level of risk in young adult heavy drinkers. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 years (N=122) participated in an ongoing 8-week randomized clinical trial that tested the efficacy of placebo-controlled naltrexone plus brief individual counseling to reduce heavy drinking. At intake participants completed self-report assessments on alcohol consumption, alcohol-r

Neuropsychological characteristics and personality traits in pathological gambling.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological gambling disorder (PG) has been associated with fronto-temporal dysfunction and maladaptive personality traits, such as impulsivity and novelty seeking. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive variance of neuropsychological and personality characteristics in PG. METHODS: Persons with PG (n=25) and a comparison group (n=34) were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests, the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Subjects with PG had evidence of fronto-temporal dysfunction as assessed by the Stroop, Wisconsi

Concurrent and predictive validity of the Addiction Severity Index in pathological gamblers.

This study evaluated psychometric properties of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) in 231 pathological gamblers. Internal consistency was similar to that reported in substance abusers, temporal stability was good, and convergent and discriminant validity was established with other indices of patient, collateral, and interviewer-rated reports. Predictive validity of most subscales was excellent when baseline composite scores were used to predict the utilization of relevant services or unemployment, probation/parole status, and bankruptcy one year later. Thus, the ASI may be a useful tool for as

Problem and probable pathological gambling among older adults assessed by the SOGS-R.

This study had three main objectives: to examine the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling among older adults, to examine the socio-demographic and gambling patterns of people with various South Oaks Gambling Screen Revised (SOGS-R) scores, and to examine endorsement of the SOGS-R items. The data were drawn from telephone interviews conducted with a sample of 1000 older adults, 60 years and older, throughout the province of Manitoba. Problem gambling was determined from scores on the SOGS-R (Lesieur, H., & Blume, S. (1987). American Journal of Psychiatry, 144, 1184-1188; Lesieur, H., & B

Impact of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other psychopathology on treatment retention among cocaine abusers in a therapeutic community.

Although there are some data suggesting that individuals with depressive disorders may be more likely to remain in treatment than those without depressive disorders, it is less clear how well other psychiatric subgroups compare to those without psychiatric comorbidity. This sample is a follow-up study of 135 individuals who were admitted into a therapeutic community. Individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), other Axis I disorders (no ADHD), and no Axis I disorders were compared. Although individuals with other Axis I disorders had a strikingly low early drop-out rate,

Mania in six preschool children.

At least nine cases of apparent preschool manic-depressive illness have been previously reported in the literature. In each of these children, a strong family history of affective illness was noted. In this report, the case histories of six preschool children ages 3 to 5 years with bipolar illness are summarized. These six were obtained from a sample of 36 consecutively hospitalized preschool children. Thus 17% of these hospitalized preschool children had bipolar illness. All had irritable mood, strong family history of affective illness, and previous presentation with symptoms of attention de

Upregulation of the platelet Serotonin2A receptor and low blood serotonin in suicidal psychiatric patients.

Suicidality has been found to be associated with low pre- and postsynaptic serotonin functioning. The purpose of this study was to examine whether in acutely suicidal psychiatric inpatients, the blood serotonin concentration was related to the underlying psychiatric disorder and whether it was associated with changes in the affinity (dissociation constant, KD) or in the maximal binding capacity (Bmax) of the platelet serotonin2A receptor. We therefore determined the blood serotonin concentrations and the platelet serotonin2A receptor activities of 45 suicidal psychiatric patients and 20 health

Hyperphagia and Down Syndrome.

A.Z. is a 14-year-old young boy with Down syndrome and intellectual disability. As a baby and toddler, A.Z. struggled with swallowing dysfunction and recurrent aspiration, which improved by the time he was school aged. At the age of 2 years, his body mass index (BMI) was 95.98% (Z score 1.75). During his early school-age years, A.Z. began eating a wider variety of foods. As he grew taller and remained active, his BMI improved briefly during this time. Between ages 10 and 12 years, concerns regarding increased appetite and excessive weight gain emerged. His BMI increased from 82.56% (Z score 0.

Sub-second Dopamine Signals during Risky Decision-Making in Patients with Impulse Control Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulse Control Disorder (ICD) in Parkinson's disease is a behavioral addiction arising secondary to dopaminergic therapies, most often dopamine receptor agonists. Prior research implicates changes in striatal function and heightened dopaminergic activity in the dorsal striatum of patients with ICD. However, this prior work does not possess the temporal resolution required to investigate dopaminergic signaling during real-time progression through various stages of decision-making involving anticipation and feedback. METHODS: We recorded high-frequency (10Hz) measurements of extrac
