Preparation of a carbon fiber brush for solid-phase microextraction of petroleum hydrocarbons from environmental water samples.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) in complex environmental matrices requires extraction materials that offer high sensitivity, robustness, and scalability. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers often suffer from limited surface area, inadequate chemical stability, and poor long-term durability, which restrict their performance in demanding analytical workflows. To overcome these limitations, carbon-based sorbents have gained increasing attention due to their thermal resistance and π-electron-rich structures. However, scalable preparation of high-surface-area architecture

Spatial distribution, contamination characteristics and health hazard potential of soil potentially toxic elements under different reclamation modes in coal mining subsidence areas.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution of reclamation soils is becoming an important issue in coal mining subsidence areas due to its impacts on environment and human health. To investigate the spatial and temporal distribution, pollution characteristics, bioaccumulation, ecological and health risk of the soils under different reclamation modes in coal mining subsidence areas, 126 soil samples and 42 crop samples were collected and analyzed from coal gangue filling areas (CG), lake sediment filling areas (LS) and land leveling areas (LL). While the results showed that PTEs concentrations

A near-infrared ratiometric fluorescent probe for visual sensing of H2S and monitoring its fluctuation in plant roots under drought and flooding stresses.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a key endogenous gasotransmitter involved in plant physiological regulation and stress responses. Monitoring its dynamic changes in plants is essential for understanding related signaling mechanisms. However, due to its chemical instability and the complexity of plant tissues, developing a reliable method for accurate quantification and real-time visualization of H2S in living plants remains challenging. Although fluorescent probes have been developed for H2S imaging, most still face critical limitations, such as emission in the visible region being suscep

Neonicotinoids and fiproles in the floodplain wetlands of the Bure Marshes, Norfolk, UK.

Neonicotinoids and fiproles are systemic insecticides applied in agriculture and as ectoparasiticides in veterinary products, with evidence indicating their application causes a decline in aquatic insect abundance. This study examined these compounds in the Bure Marshes, a shallow lake system within the Broads National Park, UK. Monthly sampling in 2023 at 10 locations produced 113 water samples analysed for neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, thiacloprid) and fiproles (fipronil, fipronil sulfide, fipronil sulfone) using QTOF mass spectrometry, alongside hydr

Autonomic indices of negative emotion regulation predict treatment response in opioid-treated chronic low back pain.

Difficulties engaging in emotion regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, may contribute to heightened pain severity, functional interference and poorer treatment response among adults with chronic low back pain (CLBP) receiving long-term opioid therapy (LTOT). This study used high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) as a physiological index of negative emotion regulation capacity to examine its influence on psychological treatment outcomes in opioid-treated CLBP. Participants (N = 68) were adults with opioid-treated CLBP enrolled in the Salt Lake City site of a multisite ra

Comparing In Vivo Methylmercury Detoxification in Hunted Duck: Implications for Wildlife and Human Health.

Great Salt Lake (GSL) waterfowl have elevated mercury (Hg) concentrations, and in vivo detoxification of neurotoxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg) can occur through Hg-selenium (Se) complexation, influencing the suitability of Hg consumption advisories. Here, we present Hg chemical speciation and Hg stable isotope measurements of brain, breast muscle, liver, and kidney samples from two GSL duck speciesnorthern shoveler (Spatula clypeata) and cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera). Chemical and stable isotope measurements, along with high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray abs

Extreme weather events and malaria prevention in pregnancy: a mediation analysis of antenatal care and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine use in two malaria-endemic counties of Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Climate change threatens maternal, and newborn health, particularly by exacerbating climate-sensitive diseases like malaria. Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) contributes to maternal anaemia, stillbirth, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. In Kenya's Lake Victoria basin, recurrent floods and droughts disrupt antenatal care (ANC), the main delivery platform for intermittent preventive treatment of MiP with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP). The extent to which these extreme weather events affect IPTp-SP uptake through ANC attendance remains unexplored. METHODS: Data are drawn from a

Identification of malaria hotspots in southwestern Benin through spatial joint modelling of malaria incidence and vector abundance.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the spatial heterogeneity in malaria transmission is crucial for designing geographically targeted control interventions, especially in high-burden communities where hotspot identification and delineation can facilitate the decision-making process toward resource allocation to specific areas where they are most needed. This study is the first attempt to identify malaria hotspots by jointly modelling vector abundance and human malaria incidence, alongside key ecological drivers, providing new insights into entomological and epidemiological synergies for public health man

Metal-organic framework-based molecularly imprinted polymers for solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in coastal-zone water samples.

Antibiotics have received wide concerns especially in coastal-zone waters, necessitating their sensitive determination. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) composites have demonstrated excellent versatility, recognition properties, and practical applicability in the sample preparation. Herein, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs)-8 (ZIF-8) as a kind of typical MOF material, was employed as the support of MIPs and the resultant ZIF-8-MIPs were used for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in coastal-zone environmental water samples fol

Linking ringed seal foraging behaviour to environmental variability.

BACKGROUND: Foraging rates directly influence animals' energetic intake and expenditure and are thus linked to body condition and the ability to survive and reproduce. Further, understanding the underlying processes driving a species' behaviour and habitat use is important as changes in behaviour could result from changes in environmental conditions. METHODS: In this study, the dives of Saimaa ringed seals (Pusa hispida saimensis) were classified for the first time using hidden Markov models and telemetry data collected on individual dives, and the behavioural states of the diving seals were

High-resolution mass spectrometry recognized Tetrabromobisphenol A bis (2,3-dibromo-2-methylpropyl ether) (TBBPA-DBMPE) as a contaminant in sediment from a flame retardant manufacturing factory.

Information on contamination status of tetrabromobisphenol, and triazine-based novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in sediment environment is very rare. Here, by use of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometry (HPLC-Q-Orbitrap/MS), we developed an analytical method for determination of three tetrabromobisphenol, and two triazine-based FRs in sediment samples. By applying this method for analysis of n = 6 sediment samples from a flame retardant manufacturing factory, we observed that total concentrations of 6 NBFRs (∑6NBFRs) ranged from 7.4
