Volatile insecticides, otherwise known as fumigants, have numerous uses in pest control and integrated pest management. Fumigants have been broadly applied in the protection of stored agricultural commodities and also in the elimination of structural pest infestations. However, fumigants have so far been mostly overlooked for use in management of public health pests such as flies and mosquitoes. This paper reports information on the development of a volatility bioassay for use in evaluating volatile insecticides against dipteran insects and on the use of this bioassay to compare the relative e

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne nematode infection that causes permanent lymphatic dysfunction in virtually all infected individuals and clinical disease in a subset of these. One major sequel of infection is lymphoedema of the limbs. Lymphoedema of the leg affects an estimated 15 million persons in LF-endemic areas worldwide. Acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (ADLA) in people with filarial lymphoedema causes acute morbidity and increasingly severe lymphoedema. Episodes of ADLA are believed to be caused by bacteria, and it has been shown that entry lesions in the skin p

The aim of this case-control study was to identify epidemiological risk factors for severe malaria among children living in Bamako, a malaria-endemic area. For this, 260 healthy community controls were matched to 130 patients with severe malaria. Conditional multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that all examined independent factors associated with severe malaria are directly related to characteristics of the child's mother, with the exception of the child's own yellow fever vaccination history (odds ratio (OR): 1.93, 95% confidence intervals (CI(95%)) [1.10-3.37]). Yellow fever (YF) has remained a disease of public health importance since it was first described in the fifteenth century. At different periods in human history, YF has caused untold hardship and indescribable misery among populations in the Americas, Europe, and Africa. It brought economic disaster in its wake, constituting a stumbling block to development. Yellow fever is an arboviral infection with three epidemiological transmission cycles between monkeys, mosquitoes, and humans. It is an acute infectious disease characterized by sudden onset, with two phases of development separated by a

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has emerged as a globally invasive vector of major public health concern. This review synthesises current evidence on its invasion biology, vector competence, ecological plasticity, and expanding epidemiological significance, with particular emphasis on arboviral transmission dynamics. A comprehensive review of experimental, field-based, and modelling studies was conducted to identify determinants of vector competence and transmission risk, including Wolbachia-mediated viral interference, temperature-driven changes in extrinsic incubation period, ver

BACKGROUND: Persistent human-to-mosquito parasite transmission hinders malaria control in high burden settings. Understanding the human transmission reservoir can support the design of targeted interventions to reduce transmission.
METHODS: In a year-long cohort study in rural Malawi, we used molecular methods to detect all Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) infections and those containing gametocytes, the parasite stage required for transmission, longitudinally at routine surveillance and sick visits. Using population-level analyses, we determined the demographic, temporal, and spatial clustering of

Malaria, a disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, remains a major challenge for global public health. The persistence of disease transmission to the mosquito vector depends on the differentiation of asexual blood-stage parasites into gametocytes, a process known as gametocytogenesis. Interrupting this stage of the parasite's life cycle represents a critical strategy for malaria control and eventual eradication. This review aims to consolidate recent advances in the understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms regulating gametocytogenesis in Plasmodium, with a particular focus

Persistent dengue transmission in tropical cities reflects a complex interplay between environmental microclimates and urban housing structure that supports Aedes mosquito breeding. This study applies drone-based microhabitat risk mapping integrated with a biologically defined Composite Risk Index (CRI) to quantify fine-scale environmental drivers of Aedes habitat risk across distinct residential typologies in Sect. 24, Shah Alam, Malaysia. High-resolution RGB imagery obtained using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro was processed to derive the Brightness Index (BI) as a proxy for shade intensity and the Ex

Plasmodium vivax malaria control and elimination is complicated by the presence of dormant liver stages, known as hypnozoites, that can reactivate weeks, months or years after infection giving rise to clinical and transmissible vivax malaria, without exposure to new infectious mosquito bites. Hypnozoite infection remains without symptoms and there are no diagnostic tools available to identify hypnozoite carriers. Such diagnostic tools are invaluable for precise mapping of the scale of the infection problem and for identifying individuals that would qualify for targeted drug treatment, to wipe

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, caused by several Plasmodium species and transmitted via mosquito vectors. Among these, Plasmodium knowlesi is notable for its zoonotic nature, capable of infecting both macaques and humans. The incidence of P. knowlesi infections has been rising, particularly in Southeast Asia, raising public health concerns. However, compared to other Plasmodium species, the biology, pathophysiology, and transmission dynamics of P. knowlesi remain poorly understood. Given the absence of a licensed vaccine and the increasing threat of drug resistance, a deeper

Dirofilaria immitis, the etiologic agent of heartworm disease in dogs, is a mosquito-borne nematode that primarily affects the cardiopulmonary system. The objective of this study was to morphologically and molecularly characterize the nematodes found in a naturally infected dog in the Sucre canton of Ecuador. It is a tropical coastal region with favorable conditions for vector proliferation, but with limited epidemiological information. The necropsy of the infected dog revealed adult nematodes located in the right ventricle and pulmonary arteries, exhibiting the sexual dimorphism characteristi

The epidemiological behavior of Plasmodium vivax malaria occurs across spatial scales including within-host, population, and metapopulation levels. On the within-host scale, P. vivax sporozoites inoculated in a host may form latent hypnozoites, the activation of which drives secondary infections and accounts for a large proportion of P. vivax illness; on the metapopulation level, the coupled human-vector dynamics characteristic of the population level are further complicated by the migration of human populations across patches with different malaria forces of (re-)infection. To explore the int

Dengue, commonly referred to as 'breakbone fever,' is a mosquito-borne arboviral infection transmitted by Aedes aegypti, featuring an average incubation period of approximately seven days. Key cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-10 are pivotal in the pathogenesis of dengue. Travelers are particularly susceptible to contracting dengue fever, with disease severity often associated with CD8+ T cell response. Without proper hospitalization during severe cases like dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)/dengue shock syndrome (DSS), mortality rates

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging mosquito-borne neurotropic virus, belonging to the Flaviviridae family and the Orthoflavivirus genus. The effective control of WNV requires a targeted preventive strategy that also needs the identification of the higher-risk populations. Hence, this study focused on a systematic literature review of WNV-acquired infection in work-related settings and the assessment of the exposure risks among different occupational categories.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted to identify studies until September 2023 in multiple databases such as Pu

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) and malaria are important vector-borne diseases that are co-endemic throughout Nigeria. These infections are transmitted by the same mosquito vector species in Nigeria and their transmission is similarly influenced by climate and sociodemographic factors. The goal of this study was to assess the relationship between the geospatial distribution of both infections in Nigeria to better coordinate interventions.
METHODS: We used national survey data for malaria from the Demographic and Health Survey dataset and site-level LF mapping data from the Nigeria Lymp

Despite the fact that Bacillus thuringiensis is the most widely used bacterium in biological pest control, its ecology has been notoriously neglected. Its role in nature is uncertain, and a defined habitat and niche are under discussion. In this report, wild-type strains were isolated from the inner plant tissues as natural endophytic bacteria in wild plants. Once a reliable superficial sterilization technique was standardized, leaf samples from 110 wildlife plant species within 52 families were processed to obtain their endophytic microflora, which were able to grow in artificial media. Chikungunya is an important mosquito-borne disease caused by the arthritogenic chikungunya virus, characterized by sporadic outbreaks all around the world. Although CD4+ T cells seem to have an important role in the pathogenesis of chikungunya, the mechanisms involved in this process are not yet fully elucidated. The ectoenzymes CD39 and CD73, also expressed by CD4 T lymphocytes, are involved in the hydrolysis of pro-inflammatory extracellular ATP and generation of immunosuppressive adenosine and seem to be modulated in some arthritogenic pathologies. However, their involvement in Chikungunya

Dengue fever (DF) is a mosquito-borne disease prevalent in the tropics (e.g., sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Central and South America) and a common cause of febrile illness in travelers. The high incidence of imported DF in Taiwan has led to a domestic outbreak. This study explored the risk factors associated with individuals given diagnoses of imported DF at international airports in Taiwan. The results may serve as a reference for DF prevention. In this retrospective study, data from the symptom notification system database of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (TCDC) were used. These da

Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has recently triggered global concern due to severe health complications. In 2015, a large ZIKV outbreak occurred in the Americas and established a link between ZIKV and microcephaly in newborn babies, spontaneous abortion, persistent viremia, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. While antivirals are being developed and prevention strategies focus on vector control, a safe and effective Zika vaccine remains unavailable. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine technology has arisen as a flexible, simplified, and fast vaccine production platform. Here, we report on a

Novel and sustainable chitosan (CS)/activated charcoal (AC) composites were prepared by cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (ECH) to form a porous structure. Different titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2 NPs) concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8% w/w) were added to enhance the photocatalytic, antibacterial, larvicidal, and pupicidal activities' efficiency toward Rose Bengal (RB) dye and the Culex pipiens. The composites were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, BET and SEM. The SEM images revealed the porous structure of CS/AC and TiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the CS/AC matrix.
