Deep-learning-enabled antibiotic discovery through molecular de-extinction.

Molecular de-extinction aims at resurrecting molecules to solve antibiotic resistance and other present-day biological and biomedical problems. Here we show that deep learning can be used to mine the proteomes of all available extinct organisms for the discovery of antibiotic peptides. We trained ensembles of deep-learning models consisting of a peptide-sequence encoder coupled with neural networks for the prediction of antimicrobial activity and used it to mine 10,311,899 peptides. The models predicted 37,176 sequences with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, 11,035 of which were not found

The minimal computational substrate of fluid intelligence.

The quantification of cognitive powers rests on identifying a behavioural task that depends on them. Such dependence cannot be assured, for the powers a task invokes cannot be experimentally controlled or constrained a priori, resulting in unknown vulnerability to failure of specificity and generalisability. Evaluating a compact version of Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM), a widely used clinical test of fluid intelligence, we show that LaMa, a self-supervised artificial neural network trained solely on the completion of partially masked images of natural environmental scenes, achie

Predicting biological activity and design of 5-HT6 antagonists through assessment of ANN-QSAR models in the context of Alzheimer's disease.

CONTEXT: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia around the world, totaling about 55 million cases, with an estimated growth to 74.7 million cases in 2030, which makes its treatment widely desired. Several studies and strategies are being developed considering the main theories regarding its origin since it is not yet fully understood. Among these strategies, the 5-HT6 receptor antagonism emerges as an auspicious and viable symptomatic treatment approach for AD. The 5-HT6 receptor belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family and is closely implicated in memory loss

Neural parameter calibration and uncertainty quantification for epidemic forecasting.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the importance of accurately forecasting contagion dynamics and learning infection parameters into sharp focus. At the same time, effective policy-making requires knowledge of the uncertainty on such predictions, in order, for instance, to be able to ready hospitals and intensive care units for a worst-case scenario without needlessly wasting resources. In this work, we apply a novel and powerful computational method to the problem of learning probability densities on contagion parameters and providing uncertainty quantification for pandemic projections.

Novel enhanced detection and resolution of a nonfluorescent mixture in plasma at nanogram levels using sustainable fluorescent carbon dots and advanced chemometric models.

For the first time, advanced chemometric models were utilized to determine florescence induced by carbon dots. In an endeavor to regulate anthelmintic drug usage by facilitating the determination of veterinary formulations in animals' biological fluids, a novel fluorometric-assisted chemometric method has been developed for detecting two nonfluorescent drugs, Ivermectin (IVR) and Clorsulon (CLR). The method relies on the linear quenching effect of the drugs on the fluorescence intensity of carbon dots (CDs) synthesized from natural sources. Despite the significant overlap, chemometric models s

Radiographic morphology of canines tested for sexual dimorphism via convolutional-neural-network-based artificial intelligence.

The permanent left mandibular canines have been used for sexual dimorphism when human identification is necessary. Controversy remains whether the morphology of these teeth is actually useful to distinguish males and females. This study aimed to assess the sexual dimorphism of canines by means of a pioneering artificial intelligence approach to this end. A sample of 13,046 teeth radiographically registered from 5838 males and 7208 females between the ages of 6 and 22.99 years was collected. The images were annotated using Darwin V7 software. DenseNet121 was used and tested based on binary answ

Modeling Functional Brain Networks for ADHD via Spatial Preservation-Based Neural Architecture Search.

Modeling functional brain networks (FBNs) for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has sparked significant interest since the abnormal functional connectivity is discovered in certain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based brain regions compared to typical developmental control (TC) individuals. However, existing models for modeling FBNs generally use dimensionality reduction techniques to process the high dimensional input data, which results in confusion and an inaccurate representation of voxel interactions between spatially close brain regions, causing misdiagnosis o

Transition from sulfur autotrophic to mixotrophic denitrification: Performance with different carbon sources, microbial community and artificial neural network modeling.

To address the limitations inherent in both sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) processes, this study introduces a novel approach. Three carbon sources (glucose, methanol, and sodium acetate) were fed into the SAD system to facilitate the transition towards mixotrophic denitrification. Batch experiments were conducted to explore the effects of influencing factors (pH, HRT) on the denitrification performance of the mixotrophic system. Carbon source dosages were varied at 12.5%, 25%, and 50% of the theoretical amounts required for HD (18, 36, and 72 mg

Rapid diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis using machine-learning-assisted surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of human vaginal fluids.

UNLABELLED: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an abnormal gynecological condition caused by the overgrowth of specific bacteria in the vagina. This study aims to develop a novel method for BV detection by integrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with machine learning (ML) algorithms. Vaginal fluid samples were classified as BV positive or BV negative using the BVBlue Test and clinical microscopy, followed by SERS spectral acquisition to construct the data set. Preliminary SERS spectral analysis revealed notable disparities in characteristic peak features. Multiple ML models were construc

Artificial intelligence-based forecasting model for incinerator in sulfur recovery units to predict SO2 emissions.

Pollutant emissions from chemical plants are a major concern in the context of environmental safety. A reliable emission forecasting model can provide important information for optimizing the process and improving the environmental performance. In this work, forecasting models are developed for the prediction of SO2 emission from a Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU). Since SRUs incorporate complex chemical reactions, first-principle models are not suitable to predict emission levels based on a given feed condition. Accordingly, artificial intelligence-based models such as standard machine learning (ML

A CNN Model for Physical Activity Recognition and Energy Expenditure Estimation from an Eyeglass-Mounted Wearable Sensor.

Metabolic syndrome poses a significant health challenge worldwide, prompting the need for comprehensive strategies integrating physical activity monitoring and energy expenditure. Wearable sensor devices have been used both for energy intake and energy expenditure (EE) estimation. Traditionally, sensors are attached to the hip or wrist. The primary aim of this research is to investigate the use of an eyeglass-mounted wearable energy intake sensor (Automatic Ingestion Monitor v2, AIM-2) for simultaneous recognition of physical activity (PAR) and estimation of steady-state EE as compared to a tr

Application of TimeGAN to IMU-based Data of Upper Limb Range of Motion.

Time-series generative adversarial networks (TimeGAN) were recently developed to produce synthetic time-series data for varied applications. Most prior uses of TimeGAN in biomechanics and rehabilitation research did not consider data from inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors for upper limb range of motion (ROM), especially in the context of disability simulation studies. In this paper, we used TimeGAN to produce synthetic three-dimensional (3D) ROM data for elbow flexion-extension movement performed under four experimental conditions within a disability simulation framework. In each experim

Convolutional Neural Networks Accurately Identify Ungradable Images in a Diabetic Retinopathy Telemedicine Screening Program.

Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Standard of care for patients with DM is an annual eye examination or retinal imaging to assess for DR, the latter of which may be completed through telemedicine approaches. One significant issue is poor-quality images that prevent adequate screening and are thus ungradable. We used artificial intelligence to enable point-of-care (at time of imaging) identification of ungradable images in a DR screening program. Methods: Nonmydriatic retinal images were gathered from patients with DM imaged during a p
