Advance Care Planning as Key to Person-Centered Care: A Co-Design Study Involving Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease, Family Members, and Healthcare Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Advance care planning is a process that supports adults at any age or stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values, life goals, and preferences regarding future medical care. Advance care planning is recommended for adults with chronic kidney disease and is an approach to facilitating person-centered care. The approach is useful at all stages of the disease and not solely related to end of life or serious disease events but also concerns management of physical, emotional, and psychological challenges throughout the illness trajectory. Living with chronic kid

Changes in Workplace Choice Reasons and Individual Influencing Factors for Nurses Across Job Changes: Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: The global nursing shortage encompasses issues such as the uneven nurse distribution in low- and middle-income countries, nurse outflow to other countries, and nurse retirement in developed countries, necessitating effective retention strategies. Our objective was to clarify the changes in facility selection reasons among Japanese nurses after changing jobs and the personal attributes influencing facility selection. Methods: In January 2023, an online survey was conducted among licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, midwives, and public health nurses in Japan. The

Exploring the association between chronic prostatitis and the risk of herpes zoster in a cohort study in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the cohort research was to study the association between chronic prostatitis and the probability of herpes zoster in Taiwan. METHODS: Using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan, we selected male persons newly diagnosed with chronic prostatitis aged 20-84 years between 2013 and 2020. These male persons were then matched with a non-prostatitis group who did not have a diagnosis of prostatitis by using 1:1 propensity score matching on age and relevant comorbidities. All participants were observed either until a new diagnosis of herpes zoster was

Potential Maladaptive Sleep-Related Cognitions in Depression with Comorbid Hypersomnolence: An Exploratory Investigation.

Objective/Background: Dysfunctional sleep-related cognitions (SRCs) have been demonstrated in both insomnia and depression, but have not been evaluated in patients experiencing depression with co-occurring hypersomnolence. Given the prominence of maladaptive thinking in depression with comorbid insomnia, dysfunctional SRCs may also exist in depressed persons experiencing hypersomnolence. Identifying potentially maladaptive SRCs may assist development of cognitive-behavioral strategies to alleviate hypersomnolence and its related impairment, particularly when comorbid with depression. Anxiety after coeliac disease diagnosis predicts mucosal healing: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease has been linked to anxiety and depression. However, their association with mucosal healing is unknown. AIM: To examine the relationship between anxiety, depression and mucosal healing in coeliac disease. METHODS: Between 1969 and 2008, we collected data on all small intestinal biopsies with villous atrophy from Sweden's 28 pathology departments. We restricted our cohort to individuals with data on follow-up biopsy (either persistent villous atrophy [n = 3317] or mucosal healing [n = 4331]). Through Cox regression, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for anxiety or de

Introducing the Hospitalist Morale Index: A new tool that may be relevant for improving provider retention.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a valid instrument to assess morale and explore the relationship between morale and intent to leave employment due to unhappiness. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An expert panel identified 46 drivers of hospitalist morale. In May 2009, responders of our single-site pilot survey rated each driver in terms of current contentment and importance to their morale. With exploratory factor analysis, a 28-item/7-factor instrument emerged. In May 2011, the refined scale was distributed to 108 hospitalists from 2 academic and 3 community hospitals. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was use

Effectiveness of 3 months of rifampicin and isoniazid chemoprophylaxis for the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in children.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/SETTING: Treatment for 3 months with rifampicin (R) and isoniazid (H) (3RH) for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), defined as an inappropriately positive tuberculin skin test with no clinical or x-ray evidence of disease, has been used locally since 1989. The efficacy of this regimen in children in the UK has only been studied indirectly. The long-term outcome of those children treated with 3RH, in the Chest Clinic of this high tuberculosis (TB) incidence district, has been studied to derive a more direct assessment of effectiveness. METHODS: All children treated wit

The relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder, psychiatric comorbidity, and personality traits among patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have highlighted the link between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and physical illnesses. No empirical studies, however, have investigated the relationship between PTSD and chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU). The role of personality traits in this relationship was also unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate (1) the extent to which patients with CIU fulfilled the PTSD diagnosis resulting from past traumas and (2) whether they developed psychiatric comorbidity, and (3) the relationship between CIU patients' personality traits, PTSD diagnosis, sever

Anatomical risk factors in primary angle-closure glaucoma. A ten year follow up survey based on limbal and axial anterior chamber depths in a high risk population.

A population of 539 persons was examined in 1979, using LCD and ACD estimations acc. to van Herick et al. and by Haag Streit pachymetry, respectively. ACD had been measured already in 1969, due to a remarkable occurrence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in the survey population of Greenland Eskimos (District of Uummannaq). The present follow up study in 1989 aimed at persons presently above age 40, who had shown either an LCD value graded as 0 (contact) or 1 (< 0.25 of corneal thickness = CT), or a value of 2 (= 0.25 CT) if an ACD value of < = 2.70 mm (CT included) had also been found.

Personal values and mental health among Chinese university students: a dual-factor model perspective.

BACKGROUND: Personal values may be important for university students' mental health. However, most studies focus on single indicators such as anxiety, depression, or well-being, with limited attention to overall mental health profiles. How different value dimensions relate to mental health heterogeneity from a dual-factor perspective remains unclear. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, latent profile analysis and multinomial logistic regression were used to identify mental health profiles and examine their associations with personal values. A total of 14,929 Chinese university students co

Altered tear fluid protein expression in persons with mild cognitive impairment.

BackgroundTear fluid (TF) is a protein-rich fluid reported to reflect pathophysiological changes in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. TF proteins are increasingly being considered as putative biomarker candidates to help in the diagnosis of disease. However, little information is available on TF protein changes in persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine alterations in the expression of proteins in TF collected from persons with MCI compared with cognitively healthy controls.MethodsWe analyzed data from 54 study partic

Assessing the Czech Version of the Inventory of Personality Organization in Relation to Borderline Personality Disorder in the ICD-11.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the Czech version of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-CZ) in relation to borderline personality disorder (BPD) as defined in the ICD-11 model for PDs and defensive functioning in BPDs. The IPO-CZ was used as a proxy measure of personality functioning (PF), although not fully identical to the conception of PF within the ICD-11 framework defined by the severity of self-other impairment. METHODS: The IPO-57, Borderline Personality Questionnaire, and Defense Style Questionnaire were administered to general population volunteers (n = 371) and mixed psy

An Investigation of Longitudinal Measurement Invariance and Item Response Theory Analysis of the LPFS-BF 2.0 in a Large Clinical Norwegian Sample.

The LPFS-BF 2.0 (Level of Personality Functioning-Brief Form 2.0) is a brief self-report instrument that was developed in order to gain a quick first impression of personality dysfunction and was designed to align with the Level of Personality Scale as outlined in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). In the current study, we used a factor analytic framework to evaluate the longitudinal measurement invariance of the Norwegian version of the LPFS-BF 2.0 in a sample of 1030 patients referred for personality disorder treatment with the R package lavaan. Additionally, we es

Rural-urban living with spinal cord injury, impact health, quality of life and integration - Experiences from Denmark.

Denmark has a welfare system and relatively small geographical distances. However, the systems are strained, especially in rural areas, which can impact the lives of persons with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and increase inequality. This study explores the lived experiences of individuals with SCI living in rural and urban areas regarding their perceived health, quality of life, and integration by applying a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach using reflexive thematic analysis of sixteen semi-structured interviews with persons previously admitted to the SCI Center of Western Denmark. Three theme
