Brain oxytocin receptors mediate ejaculation elicited by 7-hydroxy-2-(di-N-propylamino) tetralin (7-OH-DPAT) in anaesthetized rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The involvement of the neuropeptide oxytocin in the control of male sexual responses is documented although its exact mechanisms of action, and especially the site(s) of action, are not fully delineated. In order to clarify this issue, we tested the effects of a peptide oxytocin antagonist delivered through different routes on sexual responses elicited, in anaesthetized male rats, by i.c.v. 7-hydroxy-2-(di-N-propylamino) tetralin (7-OH-DPAT), a dopamine agonist, preferentially active on D3 receptors. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Seminal vesicle pressure (SVP) and bulbospongi

Haemodynamic changes induced by hyperbaric bupivacaine during lateral decubitus or supine spinal anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hypotension, the commonest side-effect of spinal anaesthesia, results from sympathetic denervation. This study compared patient positioning (supine vs. decubitus) on haemodynamic variables during spinal anaesthesia. METHODS: After intravenous crystalloid preloading with 5 mL kg(-1), hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.5% 2.5 mL was injected intrathecally at the L2-3 or L3-4 interspace. Patients were then randomly assigned to be positioned immediately supine and horizontal for 30 min (Group SUP, n = 12), or remained in the lateral decubitus position (fractured hip dependent) for

Primary Intracranial Cholesteatoma Presenting as a Cerebellar Mass Without Otologic Symptoms.

Intracranial cholesteatoma (epidermoid tumor) is an uncommon benign lesion that may demonstrate locally aggressive behavior, resulting in bone erosion and significant mass effect. Posterior fossa involvement presenting as a cerebellar syndrome in the absence of otologic symptoms is exceptionally rare and may closely mimic primary intracranial neoplasms, posing a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 29-year-old male who developed progressive vertigo, gait instability, and projectile vomiting one month after an appendectomy performed under spinal anesthesia. Neurological examination rev

A NECAP1 Nonsense Variant is Associated With Leukoencephalomyelopathy With Oligodendroglial Dysplasia in a Belgian Malinois With Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

A 7-month-old Belgian Malinois puppy was presented for progressively worsening ataxia and episodes of aggression. General physical examination was unremarkable, and neurological examination revealed ambulatory tetraparesis, spinocerebellar ataxia, thoracic limb pseudo-hypermetria, exaggerated head movements, bilateral vestibular signs and a bilateral divergent strabismus. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and cervical spinal cord revealed a generalized cerebral atrophy. The dog woke up from anesthesia in a severe episode of disorientation and aggression, wherefore he was euthaniz

Histoblast: A Novel Cavitative High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)-Modified Technique for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent condition, often requiring intervention due to its impact on quality of life. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has demonstrated efficacy in prostate cancer treatment; however, its application in BPH remains limited by prolonged treatment times and delayed symptom relief. This report introduces a novel HIFU-based technique (Histoblast) using the Sonablate 500® (SB-500) system to improve treatment efficiency and clinical outcomes in BPH. Key modifications to the conventional HIFU approach include: (1) a checkerboard treatment pattern to r

Evaluation of risk factors for postpartum cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, a multicenter retrospective observational study.

The postpartum period is a well-defined risk factor for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). However, it is unclear which patients are at risk for CVST in the postpartum period. Thus, determining some CVST risk factors in postpartum patients may be useful for preventing the disorder in this population. Previous studies have shown that preeclampsia (PE) is a risk factor for pulmonary thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis, but whether it is related to postpartum CVST has not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to determine if this relationship exists. This study was a case-control study

Undiagnosed mirror syndrome with maternal hypoxemia onset during an emergency cesarean section: A case report.

RATIONALE: Mirror syndrome is a rare pregnancy condition in which maternal edema is associated with fetal hydrops. Because of its rarity and overlapping symptoms, this condition is often misdiagnosed as another pregnancy complication. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old pregnant Japanese woman presented with sudden 7.5-kg weight gain, leg edema, and increased d-dimer level. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasound revealed polyhydramnios and fetal hydrops, and findings of maternal edema and blood test results were suggestive of Miller syndrome. Although, the patient was initially misdiagnosed due to a lack of info

Anatomical variations of ilioinguinal nerve: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Several anatomical variations of the ilioinguinal nerve branches have been recorded in older studies. Knowledge of these variations is useful for the improvement of peripheral nerve blocks and avoidance of iatrogenic nerve injuries during abdominal surgeries. The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic review of the literature about the anatomical topography and variations of the ilioinguinal nerve. METHODS: An extensive search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases was conducted by the first author in November 2021, with the use of the PRISMA guidelin

Flow dynamics of ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus block in adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The outcomes of plexus and peripheral nerve blocks depend on needle-nerve contact and the spread of local anesthetic (LA) around the plexus or nerve. Needle-nerve distance and spread of LA could be visualized during US-guided lumbar plexus block (LPB). MATERIAL AND METHODS: After Institutional Ethics Committee approval and after obtaining informed consent, 24 American Society of Anesthesiologists'-physical status I-III patients who underwent surgical fixation of fractures of proximal femur were enrolled. Spinal anesthesia was a primary anesthetic in all patients. At the e

Thoracolumbar epidural stimulation effects on bladder and bowel function in uninjured and chronic transected anesthetized rats.

Pre-clinical studies have shown that spinal cord epidural stimulation (scES) at the level of pelvic and pudendal nerve inputs/outputs (L5-S1) alters storage and/or emptying functions of both the bladder and bowel. The current mapping experiments were conducted to investigate scES efficacy at the level of hypogastric nerve inputs/outputs (T13-L2) in male and female rats under urethane anesthesia. As found with L5-S1 scES, T13-L2 scES at select frequencies and intensities of stimulation produced an increase in inter-contraction interval (ICI) in non-injured female rats but a short-latency void i

Preoperative Cerebrospinal Fluid Cortisol and the Risk of Postoperative Delirium: A Prospective Study of Older Hip Fracture Patients.

BACKGROUND: Ageing, depression, and neurodegenerative disease are common risk factors for delirium in the elderly. These risk factors are associated with dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, resulting in higher levels of cortisol under normal and stressed conditions and a slower return to baseline. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether elevated preoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cortisol levels are associated with the onset of postoperative delirium. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study CSF samples were collected after cannulation for the introduction of spinal anest

A Pregnant Woman with Multi-Fragmented Giant Cell Tumor of Tendon Sheath: A Rare Anatomical Location.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) in the foot is a rare pathology and is involved in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors of the foot and ankle. Although it can affect any age group, GCTTS mainly occurs at the 3rd and 5th decade and is more common in females. Histopathologic examination is a major definitive method for diagnosis, although physical examination and radiologic imaging are helpful in reaching a diagnosis preoperatively. Many treatment options exist but marginal excision is the most commonly used treatment. We describe the case of a 26-year-old pregnant woma

Trigeminal Nerve Blockade in the Pterygopalatine Fossa for the Management of Postoperative Pain in Three Adults Undergoing Tonsillectomy: A Proof-of-Concept Report.

SETTING: Post-tonsillectomy pain in adults can be severe and is often poorly controlled. Pain can lead to decreased oral intake, bleeding, longer hospital stays, emergency department visits, dehydration, and weight loss. Due to persistent pain despite scheduled medications, other methods for pain control are needed. Local/regional anesthetic options have been previously studied in this population. Unfortunately, neither the injection of local anesthetics into the tonsillar fossa nor the postoperative topical application of local anesthetics to the tonsillar bed has demonstrated efficacy in lar
