Fact-finding survey of hearing loss among community-dwelling older adults: Intergroup comparison of participants who attended lectures related and unrelated to hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the differences in the awareness of hearing loss and interest in hearing aid support measures in general community residents who did or did not attend hearing-related lectures. This study aimed to clarify whether self-reported hearing loss matched or deviated from audiometry results. METHODS: The participants were 136 community residents (men: 44, women: 92) aged ≥60 years who participated in public lectures for citizens or attended senior citizens' public meetings that were held between April 2023-2025. The lectures and meetings were categorized based on whether their

Early identification of a 12-bp tandem duplication in TNFRSF11A encoding receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B (RANK): Clinical characterization and response to bisphosphonate therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Ultra-rare mendelian osteolytic disorders caused by different length in-frame activating duplications within exon 1 of TNFRSF11A encoding receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B (RANK) comprise familial expansile osteolysis (FEO), expansile skeletal hyperphosphatasia (ESH), early-onset familial Paget's disease of bone (PDB2), juvenile Paget's disease 2 (JPD2), and panostotic expansile bone disease (PEBD). FEO typically presents with childhood-onset deafness followed by resorption of permanent dentition, and then appendicular bone pain, fractures, and deformities from progres

A Multinational Cost-Consequence Analysis of a Bone Conduction Hearing Implant System-A Randomized Trial of a Conventional vs. a Less Invasive Treatment With New Abutment Technology.

Background: It is hypothesized that, for patients with hearing loss, surgically placing an implant/abutment combination whilst leaving the subcutaneous tissues intact will improve cosmetic and clinical results, increase quality of life (QoL) for the patient, and reduce medical costs. Here, incremental costs and consequences associated with soft tissue preservation surgery with a hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated abutment (test) were compared with the conventional approach, soft tissue reduction surgery with an all-titanium abutment (control). Methods: A cost-consequence analysis was performed based o

Focused Neuro-Otological Review of Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System.

BACKGROUND: Infratentorial siderosis (iSS) is a progressive degenerative disorder targeting primarily the cerebellum and cranial nerve eighth; therefore, progressive ataxia and its neuro-otological findings are common. Toxicity from hemosiderin involves selectively vulnerable neurons and glia in these posterior fossa structures. Other neurologic findings may be present, though our focus relates to the cochlea-vestibular cerebellar involvement. Radiographic evidence of siderosis may be the result of recurrent, albeit covert bleeding in the subarachnoid space, or the consequence of an overt post

[Semi-implantable transcutaneous bone conduction hearing devices].

BACKGROUND: Patients with air-bone gaps or combined hearing loss that cannot be corrected by tympanoplasty can be treated with bone conduction hearing aids. The disadvantages of conventional and percutaneous systems are, on one hand, the obvious external fixation components and on the other hand, the biological and psychosocial problems of open implants. This project was therefore set up to develop a semi-implantable, magnetically anchored transcutaneous bone conduction device, introduce it into clinical application and follow-up the results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The principle of this bone c

Intraoperative monitoring of auditory function: experimental observations and new applications.

The three different methods of intraoperative monitoring, namely, auditory brainstem response evaluation (ABR), electrocochleography (ECoG), and direct eighth nerve compound action potentials monitoring are reviewed. Both ECoG and direct eighth nerve monitoring surpass the ABR in their ability to provide fast, almost instantaneous, large, reproducible potentials in response to click stimuli. Changes in the amplitude and the latency of these potentials alert the surgeon of an impending eighth nerve injury. Human clinical observations revealed instances of persistence of the ECoG despite a total

Validation of the Mandarin Chinese Translation of the "Meaning of Life" in Patients with Hearing Loss or Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing need to evaluate the quality of life of individuals who are hearing impaired. However, most of the generic "quality of life" questionnaires do not include communication-related questions. Recently, a new "Meaning of Life" (MOL) questionnaire was developed to measure quality of life based on everyday issues, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of tinnitus patients and cochlear implant users. A Mandarin Chinese version of this questionnaire for the Mandarin-speaking population is needed. Many of the existing Mandarin Chinese questionnaires currently in use are

Effects of delayed versus immediate umbilical cord clamping in reducing death or major disability at 2 years corrected age among very preterm infants (APTS): a multicentre, randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants are at increased risk of adverse outcomes in early childhood. We assessed whether delayed clamping of the umbilical cord reduces mortality or major disability at 2 years in the APTS Childhood Follow Up Study. METHODS: In this long-term follow-up analysis of the multicentre, randomised APTS trial in 25 centres in seven countries, infants (<30 weeks gestation) were randomly assigned before birth (1:1) to have clinicians aim to delay clamping for 60 s or more or clamp within 10 s of birth, both without cord milking. The primary outcome was death or major disabili

[Sound sensations produced by electric stimulation of the structures of the middle ear and the tympanic chord].

Certain facts must be clearly understood before any attempt is made to analyse the sensations produced by electrical stimulation of the structures of the middle ear. Firstly, when the current passes from an electrode to the skin or to any polarised structure whatsoever, the point at which the electrode is applied and the skin behave like the two plates of a condenser microphone. Electrical vibrations are transformed into ordinary acoustic resonances which can travel through air or bone. These acoustic resonances are fairly pure in comparison with electrical vibrations, judged by the standards

The role of acidic fibroblast growth factor in recovery of acoustic trauma.

We administered acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) to the perilymph of the guinea pig cochlea after exposure to intense sound to investigate its effect on the process of recovery after acoustic trauma. We assessed auditory brain stem response (ABR) thresholds to evaluate cochlear function and observed the sensory epithelium using confocal laser-scanning microscopy. After noise exposure (120 dB SPL, 5 h), the ABR threshold showed an increase of approximately 50 dB SPL that recovered after 14 days. Cochlear function in aFGF treated ears recovered more quickly than that in control ears. These

[Otologic sequels in velopalatine clefts. Analysis and management].

As early as in 1878, medical teams managing children born with a velopalatine cleft had noted the prevalence of middle-ear pathologies largely related to anatomic and inflammatory Eustachian tube dysfunction. The aim of this study was to describe otologic sequels related to a velopalatine cleft and to suggest an adapted management. These sequels are evolving presentations of chronic serous otitis; they worsen the functional prognosis (hypoacousia) and more rarely the vital prognosis (cerebral or infectious complications of cholesteatoma). We must stress the importance of prevention: during the

Rate of recovery of taste function after preservation of chorda tympani nerve in middle ear surgery with special reference to type of disease.

To study the recovery of function of the chorda tympani nerve, we examined by electrogustometry 79 patients (83 ears) with both preoperative normal function of the nerve and operative preservation of the nerve, every 2 days during hospitalization and at 6 months after surgery. For symptoms such as tongue numbness and taste disturbance, patients with noninflammmatory (NI) diseases (13/20 or 65.0%) showed a significantly higher rate of symptoms than did patients with chronic otitis media (COM; 13/35 or 37.1%) at 2 weeks after surgery (p = .032). The patients with NI diseases (5/20 or 25.0%) tend

Intraoperative auditory assessments as predictors of hearing preservation after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

The purpose of this study was to determine the association of intraoperative auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and near-field cochlear nerve action potentials (CNAPs) with postoperative hearing preservation in acoustic tumor surgery. Thirty-three consecutive patients undergoing middle fossa surgery had intraoperative surface ABR and direct CNAP assessments. Postoperatively, hearing was assessed. Hearing preservation was defined as any measurable hearing at any frequency and also by the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) hearing preservation classification sys

Global return on investment and cost-effectiveness of WHO's HEAR interventions for hearing loss: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: To address the growing prevalence of hearing loss, WHO has identified a compendium of key evidence-based ear and hearing care interventions to be included within countries' universal health coverage packages. To assess the cost-effectiveness of these interventions and their budgetary effect for countries, we aimed to analyse the investment required to scale up services from baseline to recommended levels, and the return to society for every US$1 invested in the compendium. METHODS: We did a modelling study using the proposed set of WHO interventions (summarised under the acronym H
