Radiation dose reduction in pediatric computed tomography (CT) using deep convolutional neural network denoising.

AIM: We evaluated the quality of noncontrast chest computed tomography (CT) for pediatric patients at two dose levels with and without denoising using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty children underwent noncontrast chest CTs for "chronic cough" using a routine dose (RD) protocol. Images were reconstructed using iterative reconstruction (IR). A validated noise insertion method was used to simulate 20% dose (TD) data for each case. A deep CNN model was trained and validated on 10 cases and then applied to the remaining 30 cases. Three certificate of qualif

Additional value of integrated 18F-choline PET/4D contrast-enhanced CT in the localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands and correlation with molecular profile.

PURPOSE: The localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland(s) (HPTG) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with negative or inconclusive first-line imaging is a significant challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the role of integrated 18F-choline PET/4D contrast-enhanced computed tomography (4DCeCT) in these patients, compare its detection rate and sensitivity with those of 18F-choline PET/CT and (4DCeCT), and analyse the association between choline metabolism and morphological, biochemical and molecular parameters of HPTG. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 44 PHPT patien

Multi-Instance Deep Learning: Discover Discriminative Local Anatomies for Bodypart Recognition.

In general image recognition problems, discriminative information often lies in local image patches. For example, most human identity information exists in the image patches containing human faces. The same situation stays in medical images as well. "Bodypart identity" of a transversal slice-which bodypart the slice comes from-is often indicated by local image information, e.g., a cardiac slice and an aorta arch slice are only differentiated by the mediastinum region. In this work, we design a multi-stage deep learning framework for image classification and apply it on bodypart recognition. Sp

Reconstruction left atrium and isolation pulmonary veins of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using single contact force catheter with zero x-ray exposure: A CONSORT Study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is associated with radiation risks for patients and laboratory staff. Three-dimensional (3D) mapping system capable of showing contact force (CF) and direction of catheter tip may compensate for nonfluoroscopic safety issues. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of zero x-ray exposure during reconstruction left atrium (LA) and ablation. METHODS: Single, CF catheter, and 3D mapping system were used to reconstruct LA and isolate pulmonary veins (PV) in all patients. The patients were random

Semi-automatic level-set based segmentation and stenosis quantification of the internal carotid artery in 3D CTA data sets.

We present a new level-set based method to segment and quantify stenosed internal carotid arteries (ICAs) in 3D contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography (CTA). Within these data sets it is a difficult task to evaluate the degree of stenoses deterministically even for the experienced physician because the actual vessel lumen is hardly distinguishable from calcified plaque and there is no sharp border between lumen and arterial wall. According to our knowledge no commercially available software package allows the detection of the boundary between lumen and plaque components. Therefore i

Depression of the maxillary sinus anterior wall and its influence on panoramic radiography appearance.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the depression aspect of the maxillary sinus anterior wall and to investigate its relationship with the panoramic image appearance of a diagonal line from the inferior part of the so-called panoramic innominate line to the medial portion of the orbital floor line. METHODS: Based on CT data, panoramic images were simulated for two typical cases with and without anterior wall depression. Next, on axial CT images of 1689 subjects (3378 sinuses) stored in our image database, the wall depths were measured and analyzed for their relationships with the panoramic appearances of

Clinical evaluation of deep learning accelerated 3D magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography at 1.5 T and 3 T.

OBJECTIVE: Routine clinical 3D magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is typically performed either as lower resolution breath-hold (BH) acquisition or higher resolution triggered navigator breathing (NAV) acquisition with a longer acquisition time, potentially limiting clinically applicability. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical feasibility of MRCP obtained using a new deep learning acceleration approach, Sonic DLTM 3D (SDL), as compared to the standard 3D MRCP.. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-four and 32 patients underwent 1.5 T and 3 T MRCP scans, respectively. The standard 3D M

Deep learning-based synthetic brain MRI for the assessment of regional atrophy patterns in neurodegenerative diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Assessing regional brain atrophy on 3D-T1w imaging is crucial for evaluating neurodegenerative disorders. However, high-quality volumetric imaging is not always available. Thus, AI-based algorithms were developed to generate "synthetic" 3D-T1w sequences using various clinical sequences as input. This retrospective study aims to investigate whether regional atrophy patterns are preserved in deep learning-based synthetic 3D-T1w sequences from different inputs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and healthy

VI-RADS and beyond in bladder MRI: a pictorial review of quality control, response assessment, and artificial intelligence.

Management of bladder cancer changes markedly once a tumor invades the muscularis propria, making reliable separation of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) from muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) a key clinical decision point. Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), interpreted with the Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS), standardizes local staging by integrating T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps, and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI). As evidence has matured, the central challenge has shifted from

ADC measurement in whole-body MRI for multiple myeloma: a three b-values vs. two b-values DWI comparison.

PURPOSE: To compare apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) reconstructed from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with three b-values (50-500-1000 s/mm2) compared with two b-values (50-1000 s/mm2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with multiple myeloma who underwent 1.5 T WB-MRI were retrospectively included. Exclusion criteria were severe motion artifacts. Examinations included axial DWI with three b-values (50-500-1000 s/mm2); ADC maps were reconstructed with both three values of b(ADC3b) and two values of b(ADC2b) excluding b500 s/mm2. Prostate Cancer Risk Stratification and Scan Tailoring Using Deep Learning on Abbreviated Prostate MRI.

BACKGROUND: MRI plays a critical role in prostate cancer (PCa) detection and management. Bi-parametric MRI (bpMRI) offers a faster, contrast-free alternative to multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI). Routine use of mpMRI for all patients may not be necessary, and a tailored imaging approach (bpMRI or mpMRI) based on individual risk might optimize resource utilization. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) model for classifying clinically significant PCa (csPCa) using bpMRI and to assess its potential for optimizing MRI protocol selection by recommending the additional sequences of mpMR

Free-Breathing High-Resolution, Swap-Free, and Motion-Corrected Water/Fat Separation in Pediatric Abdominal MRI.

OBJECTIVES: The T1-weighted GRE (gradient recalled echo) sequence with the Dixon technique for water/fat separation is an essential component of abdominal MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), useful in detecting tumors and characterizing hemorrhage/fat content. Unfortunately, the current implementation of this sequence suffers from several problems: (1) low resolution to maintain high pixel bandwidth and minimize chemical shift; (2) image blurring due to respiratory motion; (3) water/fat swapping due to the natural ambiguity between fat and water peaks; and (4) off-resonance fat blurring due to t

Improved Diffusion-Weighted Hyperpolarized 129Xe Lung MRI with Patch-Based Higher-Order, Singular Value Decomposition Denoising.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Hyperpolarized xenon (129Xe) MRI is a noninvasive method to assess pulmonary structure and function. To measure lung microstructure, diffusion-weighted imaging-commonly the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)-can be employed to map changes in alveolar-airspace size resulting from normal aging and pulmonary disease. However, low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) decreases ADC measurement certainty, and biases ADC to spuriously low values. Further, these challenges are most severe in regions of the lung where alveolar simplification or emphysematous remodeling generate abnor

Successful visualization of dynamic change of lumbar nerve root compression with the patient in both upright and prone positions using dynamic digital tomosynthesis-radiculography in patients with lumbar foraminal stenosis: An initial report of three cases.

The symptoms of lumbar foraminal stenosis are often exacerbated when the patient is upright. Lumbar pathological conditions related to clinical symptoms such as disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, and instability of the lumbar spine are often exacerbated when the patient is upright and hidden when the patient is supine. Lumbar radiculopathy is usually diagnosed by MRI. However, it is difficult to detect the compression of nerve roots while the patient is upright using conventional MRI when the patient is supine. Dynamic digital tomosynthesis radiculography (DTRG) while the patient is upright
