Transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia (the inability to encode new memories), accompanied by repetitive questioning, sometimes with a retrograde component, lasting up to 24 hours, without compromise of other neurologic functions. Herein, we review current knowledge on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, and prognosis of TGA. For this review, we conducted a literature search of PubMed, with no date limitations, using the following search terms (or combinations of them): transient global amnesia, etiology

Effect of a postural support nappy on 'flattened posture' of the lower extremeties in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of a postural support nappy (PSN) would reduce the features of 'flattened posture' in the lower extremities of infants < 31 weeks gestation who are nursed prone. METHODOLOGY: Randomized, observer blind, controlled trial conducted at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Perth, Western Australia. Infants were randomly assigned and stratified by gestational age to be nursed in a conventional nappy (n = 29) or a PSN (n = 31) when in the prone position. The features of 'flattened posture' were measured as angles and assessed by blinded observers prior to

Neuronal primary cilia are not required for hippocampal circuit function or behavior in adult mice.

Primary cilia, which are present in most brain cells, are essential for brain development and function. During early brain development, dysfunction of the primary cilia can lead to a broad spectrum of disorders, collectively termed ciliopathies, that include brain malformations and intellectual disability. Although the role of primary cilia in brain development is well-established, cilia-mediated signaling in mature neurons and the contribution of cilia to neuronal circuit function remain controversial. Using mouse genetic and behavioral studies, single-cell electrophysiology, and 2-photon ima

Long-Term Prediction of Blood Glucose Levels in Type 1 Diabetes Using a CNN-LSTM-Based Deep Neural Network.

BACKGROUND: In this work, we leverage state-of-the-art deep learning-based algorithms for blood glucose (BG) forecasting in people with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: We propose stacks of convolutional neural network and long short-term memory units to predict BG level for 30-, 60-, and 90-minute prediction horizon (PH), given historical glucose measurements, meal information, and insulin intakes. The evaluation was performed on two data sets, Replace-BG and DIAdvisor, representative of free-living conditions and in-hospital setting, respectively. RESULTS: For 90-minute PH, our model obtained mea

Memory and Cognition-Related Neuroplasticity Enhancement by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Rodents: A Systematic Review.

Brain stimulation techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), were identified as promising therapeutic tools to modulate synaptic plasticity abnormalities and minimize memory and learning deficits in many neuropsychiatric diseases. Here, we revised the effect of tDCS on the modulation of neuroplasticity and cognition in several animal disease models of brain diseases affecting plasticity and cognition. Studies included in this review were searched following the terms ("transcranial direct current stimulation") AND (mice OR mouse OR animal) and according to the PRISMA

Classification of Non-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury from Resting-State EEG Signal Using LSTM Network with ECOC-SVM.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the common injuries when the human head receives an impact due to an accident or fall and is one of the most frequently submitted insurance claims. However, it is often always misused when individuals attempt an insurance fraud claim by providing false medical conditions. Therefore, there is a need for an instant brain condition classification system. This study presents a novel classification architecture that can classify non-severe TBI patients and healthy subjects employing resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) as the input, solving the immobility

Deficits in spatial learning and memory in adult mice following acute, low or moderate levels of prenatal ethanol exposure during gastrulation or neurulation.

Debate continues on the merits of strictly limiting alcohol consumption during all of pregnancy, and whether "safe" consumption levels and/or times exist. Only a relatively few experimental studies have been conducted that limit the timing of exposure to specific events during development and the exposure level to one that might model sporadic, incidental drinking during pregnancy. In the present study, the effects of two acute gavage exposures to low and moderate levels of ethanol (peak blood ethanol concentrations (BEC) of 104 and 177mg/dl, respectively) either during gastrulation on gestati

Preschool outcome of less than 801-gram preterm infants compared with full-term siblings.

OBJECTIVE: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at greater risk for neurodevelopmental delay than full-term infants. Outcomes may be compromised secondary to abnormal brain development associated with complications of prematurity. Long-term cognitive outcome has also been reported to be significantly influenced by postnatal factors. The objective of this study was to clarify the effects of prematurity separate from environmental factors on growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes by comparing ELBW children with their full-term siblings. METHODS: The study consisted of 25 ELBW children,

Short-term Aronia melanocarpa extract supplementation improves cognitive performance: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study in healthy young adults.

PURPOSE: Evidence on the potential beneficial effects of anthocyanin-rich foods and supplements on cognitive performance is mainly based on acute or long-term studies in older adults. However, short-term studies focusing on a younger population are lacking. Therefore, short-term effects of Aronia melanocarpa extract (AME) supplementation on cognitive performance were investigated in healthy young adults. Potential underlying mechanisms were also addressed. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study was performed involving 35 apparently healthy young adults. Parti

Intelligence, motoric and psychological outcomes in children from different ART treatments: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Subtle abnormalities in children's intelligence, motor skills, and psychology from various assisted reproductive treatments (ARTs) might be underdiagnosed. Understanding the prognosis of intelligence, motor skills, and psychology in children from ART would provide parents with reasonable expectations and enable them to plan relevant support to achieve the optimum potential in ART children. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases until April 13, 2021, to identify relevant studies. Thirty-four studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Alzheimer's disease core biomarkers are associated with worse baseline and postoperative cognitive profiles in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: findings from the Bologna PRO-Hydro study.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a clinico-radiological syndrome affecting the elderly. Recent studies have reported a high prevalence of neurodegenerative copathologies in iNPH, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neuropsychological studies in iNPH sample revealed variable and heterogeneous cognitive profile. Few studies have examined cognitive differences according to neurodegenerative copathology, and none has systematically applied a comprehensive neuropsychological battery while stratifying patients by AD biomarkers both before and after surgery. The main

Performance evaluation of ARIMA, VAR, ANN, GRU, and LSTM for multivariate healthcare time-series prediction: a rigorous, reproducible benchmarking study with ablation analysis on MIMIC-III and eICU.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate forecasting of physiological time-series in the intensive care unit (ICU) is critical for early-warning systems, deterioration detection, and dynamic resource allocation. Yet the comparative literature suffers from five persistent methodological deficiencies: non-unified experimental conditions, heterogeneous preprocessing, univariate classical baselines compared against multivariate neural models, single-run point estimates without variance, and underspecified prediction tasks. METHODS: This paper addresses all five deficiencies through a standardized, reproducible ben

Diabetic retinopathy: why some eyes suffer more - a focus on retina-specific risk factors and metabolic memory.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a significant microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and remains the primary cause of vision loss among diabetic patients, imposing a severe burden on both quality of life and socioeconomic resources. Although hyperglycemia is established as the central driver for the onset and progression of DR, substantial heterogeneity in individual susceptibility exists, as not all patients with comparable diabetic status develop DR. This highlights the influence of additional specific modifying factors. Therefore, systematically elucidating the hierar

Enduring autism-like phenotypes and deregulated hypothalamic prosocial peptides after early-life exposure to indoor flame retardants in male C57BL/6 mice.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are neuroendocrine-disrupting chemicals that produce adverse neurodevelopmental effects. PBDEs have been implicated as risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is characterized by abnormal psychosocial functioning and is commonly comorbid with cognitive deficits and sensory abnormalities. Here, we used a mouse model with translationally relevant exposure to establish direct causal evidence that maternal transfer of a commercial mixture of PBDEs, DE-71, produces ASD-relevant behavioral and neuroendocrine deficits in male offspring. Integrating pharmacovigilance signals with real-world validation: a study on neurological events associated with PCSK9 inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors are novel drugs widely used in clinical practice for the treatment of dyslipidemia. However, real-world data regarding their long-term neurological safety and tolerability in large populations remain incomplete. Therefore, we utilized the FAERS and real-world data from Chinese patients to jointly analyze the association between PCSK9 inhibitors and adverse drug events (ADEs) related to nervous system disorders. METHODS: A disproportionality analysis was performed on all ADEs associated with PCSK9 inhibitors in the FA

Blockage of VEGF function by bevacizumab alleviates early-stage cerebrovascular dysfunction and improves cognitive function in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the predominant type of dementia worldwide. It is characterized by the progressive and irreversible decline of cognitive functions. In addition to the pathological beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition, glial activation, and neuronal injury in the postmortem brains of AD patients, increasing evidence suggests that the often overlooked vascular dysfunction is an important early event in AD pathophysiology. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a critical role in regulating physiological functions and pathological changes

Research progress on phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors in central nervous system diseases.

Phosphodiesterases (PDE) are involved in the regulation of cellular physiological processes and neurological functions, including neuronal plasticity, synapto-genesis, synaptic transmission, memory formation and cognitive functions by catalyzing the hydrolysis of intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Many basic and clinical studies have shown that PDE4 inhibitors block or ameliorate the occurrence and development of central nervous system (CNS) diseases by inhibiting cAMP hydrolysis, increasing cAMP content and enhancing its downstream e
