The value of novel MRI techniques in Parkinson-plus syndromes: diffusion tensor imaging and anatomical connectivity studies.

Conventional MRI is a well-described, highly useful tool for the differential diagnosis of degenerative parkinsonian syndromes. Nevertheless … I in monitoring disease progression. In MSA, the ataxia score was correlated with ADC values in the pons and the upper cerebellar peduncles, whereas both the motor score and the disease duration were correlated with putaminal ADC values. In conclusion, DTI and connectivity studies constitute promising tools for differentiating between "Parkinson-plus" …

Association of L55M and Q192R polymorphisms in paraoxonase 1 (PON1) gene with breast cancer risk and their clinical significance.

The HDL-associated paraoxonase (PON) activities play a role in decreasing oxidative stress, which is known to contribute to cancer development. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between the PON1 L55M and Q192R polymorphisms and breast cancer (BC) risk in Egyptian females and to analyze their relation to clinicopathological parameters of BC. Both polymorphisms were characterized in 100 BC Egyptian females and 100 healthy women who had no history of any malignancy by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method, using DNA from peripheral bl

Repeat Gamma Knife surgery for trigeminal neuralgia: long-term results.

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term outcome achieved after repeat Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) using a uniform treatment plan. METHODS: Between 1985 and 2010, 53 patients underwent repeat GKS for refractory TN. In the initial GKS, which involved targeting the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve, a maximal dose of 80 Gy was used with a 4-mm collimator so that the 50% isodose line abutted the pons. In the second GKS, the treatment plan consisted of a 70-Gy dose directed at a target 4-5 mm distal to the first target on the trigeminal nerve…

Pathophysiology of REM sleep behaviour disorder and relevance to neurodegenerative disease.

REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by the loss of normal skeletal muscle atonia during REM sleep with prominent motor activity accompanying dreaming. The terminology relating to RBD, and mechanisms underlying REM sleep without atonia and RBD based on data in cat and rat are presented. Neuroimaging data from the few published human cases with RBD associated with structural lesions in the brainstem are presented, in which the dorsal midbrain and pons are implicated. Pharmacological manipulations which alter RBD frequency and severity are reviewed, and the data from …

Surgical management of brainstem cavernomas.

OBJECT: A careful retrospective analysis of 36 cases was performed to evaluate the pre- and postoperative rates of morbidity that occur in patients with brainstem cavernous angiomas. METHODS: The authors evaluated immediate postoperative and follow-up outcomes with regard to clinical findings, the incidence of preoperative hemorrhage(s), location and size of the lesions, and the timing of the surgical procedure after the last hemorrhagic event. Specifically. the following parameters were analyzed: 1) number of hemorrhages; 2) the precise brainstem location (pontomesencephalic, pons, and medul…

These included 12 species of New World monkeys, 10 species of Old World monkeys, and Hylobates, Gorilla, Pan, and humans. The measurements were the volume of medial (fastigial) (CM), interpositus (globose and emboliform) (CI), and lateral (dentate) (CL) cerebellar nuclei, ventral pons (VPo), inferior olivary principal (OLIPr), and accessory (OLIAc) nuclei and vestibular nuclear complex (VES). Responses of respiratory modulated and tonic units in the retrotrapezoid nucleus to CO2.

We hypothesized that the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) contains both respiratory modulated (RM) and non-respiratory modulated (NRM) neurons which participate in the ventilatory response to increased CO2. We made extracellular recordings of the activity of 46 single units in the RTN of 9 decerebrate, paralyzed, ventilated cats (5 intact; 4 with carotid body and sinus ablation) under eucapnic (PCO2 = 34.2 +/- 3.5 mmHg; mean +/- SD) and hypercapnic (PCO2 = 47.4 +/- 3.4 conditions. To define a RM unit, we used the eta 2 statistic which is the ratio of the variance of the unit firing rate within res…

Effects of pilocarpine on breathing movements in normal, chemodenervated and brain stem-transected fetal sheep.

We examined the effects on fetal breathing movements (FBM) and electrocortical activity (ECoG) of the administration of pilocarpine to th … fects on fetal behaviour via at least two sites in the central nervous system. One site lies in the pons or medulla and is responsible for the stimulation of FBM. The other site is above the level of the colliculi and is responsible for producing sustained low-voltage ECoG. These effects do not require the integrity of the peripheral chemoreceptors and …

Network change in the ipsilesional cerebellum is correlated with motor recovery following unilateral pontine infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with acute pontine infarcts generally have good short-term motor outcomes; however, the mechanisms underlying this recovery of function remain unclear. METHODS: Twenty well-recovered patients with acute pontine infarcts and 20 well-recovered patients with acute striato-capsular infarcts were recruited. Fugl-Meyer assessment and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed 1, 4 and 12 weeks after onset. Patients were further assigned to better and worse recovery subgroups according to the degree of motor recovery at the twelfth week after

CLIPPERS and the need for long-term immunosuppression.

Chronic Lymphocytic Inflammation with Pontine Perivascular Enhancement Responsive to Steroids (CLIPPERS) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system. Herein, we describe the case of a 62-year-old female who presented with right sided facial tingling, gait ataxia and diplopia. Neuroimaging revealed pontine curvilinear enhancing lesions with extension into cerebellar peduncles, characteristic of CLIPPERS. This report discusses the differential diagnosis and the importance of prolonged immunomodulatory treatment for this rare neuro-inflammatory disorder. Long-term immuno…

Mapping of neural pathways that influence diaphragm activity and project to the lumbar spinal cord in cats.

During breathing, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles contract out of phase. However, during other behaviors (including vomiting, postural adjustments, and locomotion) simultaneous contractions are required of the diaphragm and other muscle groups including abdominal muscles. Recent studies in cats using transneuronal tracing techniques showed that in addition to neurons in the respiratory groups, cells in the inferior and lateral vestibular nuclei (VN) and medial pontomedullary reticular formation (MRF) influence diaphragm activity. The goal of the present study was to determine whether neuro

Inhibitory effect of state independent ponto-geniculo-occipital waves on seizure occurrence induced by local application of penicillin into the temporal lobe amygdala.

PURPOSE: In order to explore the possible inhibitory role of the phasic phenomena of REM sleep ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves over epilepsy, seizure activity produced by topic administration of Na-penicillin (PCN) has been analyzed during sustained PGO waves irrespective of current state. PGO waves were induced by the injection of carbachol in the peribrachial area. METHODS: The development of acute experimental epilepsy was compared among nine chronically implanted, adult, male cats, by means of polygraphic 23 h recordings. Our protocol consisted of sets of 4 trials: carbachol; PCN; ca
