The precollege examination: fostering a healthy transition.

The college years are marked by major life changes, character development, decision making about the future, added responsibilities, and moving away from home. Nurse practitioners have the unique opportunity to facilitate this transition to adulthood by using the precollege examination to screen for potential problems and to encourage the development of responsible health-promoting behaviors.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Eating Disorders.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) conceptualizes eating disorders (EDs) as rigid attempts to solve the problem of human suffering through food, eating or weight control. Case formulation and intervention is based on functional assessment of ED behaviors and informed by common patterns of psychological flexibility observed across dimensions of cognition, emotion, self, motivation, and overt action. ACT interventions, combined with other evidence-based practices for EDs, can be used to disrupt ED behaviors and increase the individual's capacity to meet their physical and emotional needs ad

Neurology-Psychiatry Interface: Uncommon Presentation of Moyamoya Disease.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare arteriopathy associated with cerebral ischemia, due to stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery and its branches and primarily presenting with stroke. However, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as acute psychosis, manic symptoms, attention deficits, and behavioral problems are reported in relation to MMD. We describe here a case of an adult female, who presented with headache, easy irritability, and suspiciousness against family members, inability to identify familiar objects and faces, and inability to perform activities easily done earlier. This case

Editorial: Troubled trajectories - new insights on risk pathways and developmental phenotypes of ADHD and externalizing problems.

We are pleased to present this special issue of JCPP, which brings together a collection of cutting-edge empirical studies that focuses on developmental trajectories and pathways associated with ADHD, conduct problems and other externalizing behaviors. JCPP has had a long-standing focus on theoretically strong prospective longitudinal studies that elucidate behavioral change and outcomes over time, including in the areas of ADHD and externalizing disorders (Kuja-Halkola, Lichtenstein, D'Onofrio & Larsson, 2015; Sonuga-Barke & Halperin, 2010). Keeping with that tradition, all of the papers in t

A systematic petri net approach for multiple-scale modeling and simulation of biochemical processes.

A method to exploit hybrid Petri nets for modeling and simulating biochemical processes in a systematic way was introduced. Both molecular biology and biochemical engineering aspects are manipulated. With discrete and continuous elements, the hybrid Petri nets can easily handle biochemical factors such as metabolites concentration and kinetic behaviors. It is possible to translate both molecular biological behavior and biochemical processes workflow into hybrid Petri nets in a natural manner. As an example, penicillin production bioprocess is modeled to illustrate the concepts of the methodolo

Hypersomnia in children: interface with psychiatric disorders.

Patients being evaluated in child psychiatry clinics for behavior and mood disturbances frequently exhibit daytime sleepiness. Conversely, patients being evaluated for hypersomnia by sleep specialists may have depressed mood or hyperactive and aggressive behavior. The etiology of daytime sleepiness in children and adolescents is diverse and includes inadequate sleep hygiene, obstructive sleep apnea, delayed sleep phase syndrome, idiopathic hypersomnia, periodic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and mood disorders per se. Treatment of a sleep disorder can have a favorable impact on alertness and quality

Conduct disorder: diagnosis and treatment in primary care.

Conduct disorder is a common childhood psychiatric problem that has an increased incidence in adolescence. The primary diagnostic features of conduct disorder include aggression, theft, vandalism, violations of rules and/or lying. For a diagnosis, these behaviors must occur for at least a six-month period. Conduct disorder has a multifactorial etiology that includes biologic, psychosocial and familial factors. The differential diagnosis of conduct disorder includes oppositional defiant disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood disorder and intermittent explosive disorder.

Behavioral upset in medical patients--revised: evaluation of a parent report measure of distress for pediatric populations.

Examined the utility of a new parent-report measure designed specifically for pediatric inpatients, the Behavioral Upset in Medical Patients-Revised (BUMP-R). The BUMP-R was administered to 151 mothers of hospitalized children ages 4-12 years the day following the child's hospital admission. The BUMP-R demonstrated good internal consistency and a factor analysis revealed four factors identified as negativity/agitation, amiability, dysphoria, and noncompliance. Children exhibiting behavioral distress at home were more likely to experience adjustment problems upon hospitalization. Demographic an

The efficacy of relaxation training with children.

This paper reviews studies that have examined the efficacy of relaxation training techniques in the treatment of childhood disorders. Methodological problems encountered in doing research in this area resemble those found in working with an adult population: imprecise definitions of subject populations and use of a variety of dependent variables from one study to another. Findings suggest that relaxation training is at least as effective as other treatment approaches for a variety of learning, behavioral, and physiological disorders when it is continued over an extended period of time and is a

Validation of the German version of the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) and associations with infant development.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sleep problems such as prolonged night waking and difficulty falling asleep are common in infants. Sleep problems can affect development and put parents at risk of sleep deprivation, potentially leading to stress and burnout. It is therefore important to identify sleep problems early to facilitate targeted intervention and support. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) developed by Sadeh (2004) is a widely used tool to identify and describe sleep behavior. However, a validated German translation is still missing. The main aim was to validate the German version

Correlates of Risk for Disinhibited Behaviors in the Million Veteran Program Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Many psychiatric outcomes are thought to share a common etiological pathway reflecting behavioral disinhibition, generally referred to as externalizing disorders (EXT). Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have demonstrated the overlap between EXT and important aspects of veterans' health, such as suicide-related behaviors, substance use disorders, and other medical conditions. METHODS: We conducted a series of phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) of polygenic scores (PGS) for EXT, and comorbid psychiatric problems (depression, schizophrenia, and suicide attempt) in

Exploring agile leadership, ambidextrous leadership, organizational agility, and innovation behaviors among nurse managers: an explanatory mixed-methods study.

AIM: To describe agile leadership, ambidextrous leadership, organizational agility, and innovation behaviors among nurse managers and explore how these practices are experienced in clinical management. BACKGROUND: Agile leadership, organizational responsiveness, and innovation are increasingly relevant to nursing management. However, these concepts may overlap substantially when measured through same-source self-report, making qualitative contextualization important for understanding how they are experienced in practice. METHODS: An exploratory sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was

Peer Relationships and Psychosocial Difficulties in Adolescents: Evidence from a Clinical Pediatric Sample.

Background: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by vulnerability to psychological difficulties. While family relationships, peer bonds, prosocial behaviors, and health-risk factors have been linked to adolescent mental health, few studies have examined their joint effects in clinical pediatric populations. This study assessed demographic, clinical, relational, and behavioral predictors of psychological difficulties in Italian adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional sample of 177 adolescents (aged 11-14 years) from a pediatric clinic completed the Strengths and Difficulties Que

Efficacy and Tolerability of Viloxazine Compared to Placebo on Emotional, Behavioral, and Executive Functioning in Children and Adolescents with ADHD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can lead to significant long-term consequences, including emotional and behavioral problems, in addition to difficulties with executive function. While stimulant medications are commonly used to treat ADHD, concerns about the risk of drug abuse have led to interest in non-stimulant options including viloxazine. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of viloxazine in improving emotional, behavioral, and executive function in children and adolescents with ADHD, focusing on age-related differences in treatment outcomes, symptom

The relationship of risk-related behaviors and substance use among U.S. Army National Guard/Army Reserve soldiers and deployment differences.

U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve (ANG/USAR) soldiers are at risk for substance use, and research in other populations suggests risk-related behaviors and traits affect the propensity for use. Less is known about how deployment might amplify these effects. Our research explored the relations between risk-related behaviors and substance use among ANG/USAR soldiers and investigated differences by deployment (previously vs. never deployed). We drew a subset of data from Operation: SAFETY, an ongoing study of ANG/USAR soldiers and their partners (married/living together as if married). Cro

Differences in behavioral health disorders and unmet treatment needs between medical marijuana users and recreational marijuana users: Results from a national adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Available data suggest that medical marijuana users may have more mental health problems than recreational marijuana users. There is limited information about differences in behavioral health disorders and unmet treatment needs between medical and recreational marijuana users. METHODS: We compared past-year prevalence of behavioral health disorders and unmet treatment needs across three marijuana subgroups (recreational use only, medical use only, and both). Sex-stratified logistic regression was performed to determine their associations with marijuana use status. We analyzed data
