C1-bypass complement-activation pathway in patients with chronic urticaria and angio-oedema.

During the routine screening of 152 patients with urticaria or angio-oedema for hypocomplementaemia, 4 patients were found to have low serum levels of the third component of complement (C). These patients were noteworthy and differed from previous reports of patients with urticaria-like skin lesions and hypocomplementaemia because of the absence of immune-complex disease. In addition to the low C3, 2 of these patients were unique on the basis of low serum levels of haemolytic C1, C1q, C1s, and properdin factor B, but normal concentrations of C4 and C2. These C abnormalities may reflect a new c

Analysis of patients with hypomagnesemia using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database (JADER).

PURPOSE: In order to clarify the occurrence of hypomagnesemia in Japan, we conducted a database search and analysis using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database (JADER). METHODS: Among the cases recorded in JADER between April 2004 and December 2015, we targeted "hypomagnesemia" and analyzed the patients' backgrounds, drug involvement, other adverse events reported with hypomagnesemia, the time of hypomagnesemia onset, outcomes, and year when reported. For drugs with three or more reports, the signal index was calculated using the Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR) method. In addition, the a

Association between magnesium intake and depression and anxiety in community-dwelling adults: the Hordaland Health Study.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammation is associated with both the dietary intake of magnesium, and depression. Limited experimental and clinical data suggest an association between magnesium and depression. Thus, there are reasons to consider dietary magnesium as a variable of interest in depressive disorders. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between magnesium intake and depression and anxiety in a large sample of community-dwelling men and women. This sample consisted of 5708 individuals aged 46-49 or 70-74 years who participated in the Hordaland Health Study in Western

Diminished effect of etidronate in vitamin D deficient osteopenic postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of vitamin D deficiency in osteopenic postmenopausal women treated with intermittent cyclical etidronate have been studied. Bone mass and biochemical parameters as bone markers were measured before and after one year of therapy with intermittent cyclical etidronate. RESULTS: In 30 patients without vitamin D deficiency, bone mass in the lumbal spine and femoral neck was significantly increased compared to 28 vitamin D deficient patients. After cyclical intermittent etidronate therapy, serum osteocalcin and PTH were significantly increased in the vitamin D deficient patie

Enhanced NO production during Mg deficiency and its role in mediating red blood cell glutathione loss.

The effect of dietary Mg deficiency on nitric oxide (NO) production and its role in mediating oxidative depletion of red blood cell (RBC) glutathione in rats were investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were placed on Mg-deficient or Mg-sufficient diets for up to 3 wk. Plasma nitrate plus nitrite levels, determined by the Escherichia coli reductase/Griess reagent procedures, increased 1.7-fold during the 1st wk and increased 2- to 2.4-fold during the 2nd and 3rd wk on the Mg-deficient diet. In association, substantial losses (approximately 50%) of RBC glutathione occurred during the 2nd and 3rd

Inorganic pyrophosphate in metabolic diseases predisposing to calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition.

Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) levels were estimated by radiometric assay in urine and in synovial fluid (SF) from asymptomatic, nonarthritic knees of patients with untreated metabolic disease and normal controls. SF PPi was significantly elevated in patients with hyperparathyroidism (mean +/- SEM 19 +/- 3 microM; n = 9), hemochromatosis (23 +/- 5 microM; n = 6), and hypomagnesemia (27 +/- 0.1 microM; n = 2) compared with normal subjects (10 +/- 0.5 microM, n = 50), and was low in patients with hypothyroidism (4.2 +/- 2.3 microM; n = 11) (P less than 0.05 all comparisons). Urinary PPi was eleva

Fluid and electrolyte problems in the emergency department.

In management of fluid and electrolyte problems in the emergency department several important principles are: (1) never completely trust the laboratory, (2) abnormalities should be treated at approximately the rate at which they developed, (3) correct only half the calculated deficit at a time and reevaluate the patient, (4) the highest priority in treatment is maintenance of intravascular volume and tissue perfusion. The osmolarity of fluid compartments as related to the fluid and electrolyte responses to stress and resultant fluid requirements for basic needs, current losses and deficits of

Pathogenesis and management of hypoparathyroidism and other hypocalcemic disorders.

Hypocalcemia frequently presents as an acute medical emergency or a chronic disorder which is difficult to control. Occasionally, it is found in routine blood screening tests when it is not anticipated. Recent developments in basic endocrine science have contributed greatly to our understanding and treatment of hypocalcemic disorders. The maintanance of a normal serum calcium concentration depends on the balanced actions of parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and, to a lesser extent, calcitonin, Recent work on PTH secretion has defined the factors controlling its secretion in normal and abno

Lactation stages modulate the hematological, serum biochemical, and endocrinological profiles and oxidative stress markers in crossbred cows under tropical humid island ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The present study was designed to assess the interrelationship between hematological, serum biochemical, and endocrinological profiles and oxidative stress markers and lactational stages in crossbred (CB) dairy cows of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI). Healthy (n = 6) CB cows (50-62.50% exotic inheritance; Holstein Friesian × Andaman local) of 4th parity with age of 7-9 years and body weight of 350-400 kg were selected from Cattle Breeding Farm, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Port Blair, ANI. These experimental cows were synchronized with Ovsynch protocol, a

Rapidly Increasing Serum 25(OH)D Boosts the Immune System, against Infections-Sepsis and COVID-19.

Vitamin D deficiency is a global public health problem, a pandemic that commonly affects the elderly and those with comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, respiratory disorders, recurrent infections, immune deficiency, and malignancies, as well as ethnic minorities living in temperate countries. The same groups were worst affected by COVID-19. Since vitamin D deficiency weakens the immune system, it increases the risk of infections, complications, and deaths, such as from sepsis and COVID-19. Deficiency can be remedied cost-effectively through targeted food fortification, suppl
