Opportunities to Interrupt Transmission of Enteropathogens of Poultry Origin in Maputo, Mozambique: A Transmission Model Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The burden of diarrheal diseases remains high among children in low-income countries. Enteropathogens are challenging to control because they are transmitted via multiple pathways. Chickens are an important animal protein source, but live chickens and their products are often highly contaminated with enteropathogens. OBJECTIVES: We conducted this study to a) understand the contribution of multiple transmission pathways to the force of infection of Campylobacter spp. and nontyphoidal Salmonella spp., b) quantify the potential impact of reducing each pathway on human infection, and

Resilience in patients with psychotic disorder.

The recovery movement differentiated clinical, which is related to disorder's symptoms, from personal recovery, which is outlined by a subjectively defined wellness state, characterised by hope and self-management. Schizophrenia research has long focused on risk factors and symptoms. The recovery movement triggered a focus shift from psychopathology towards better adjustment and growth despite living with schizophrenia. The recovery movement flourished parallel with positive psychology, the scientific study of ordinary human strengths and virtues investigating human motives and potentials. Und

A Brief Report on the Implementation of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in Clinical Practice.

The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) was introduced in the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a dimensional alternative to the traditional categorical model. Despite considerable research, systematic implementation in clinical practice has remained limited. This article reports on the implementation of the AMPD in an institution that specializes in the assessment and treatment of personality disorders to offer guidance for other teams considering the adoption of the AMPD. Implementation involved developing a multimethod assessm

Towards the Prevention of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease.

Despite optimal management, freezing of gait (FOG) remains a disabling complication of Parkinson's disease (PD), contributing substantially to falls, loss of independence and reduced quality of life. This highlights the pressing need for a shift towards preventive approaches, aiming to postpone or even prevent its development. In this narrative review, we examine potential avenues for the secondary prevention of FOG. We discuss how FOG might be prevented specifically, by targeting modifiable risk factors that seem associated with the development of FOG. Examples of potentially effective strate

Use of personalized graft cage and RIA bone graft in a case of acute infection following a grade 2 open tibial shaft fracture: a new option for bone grafting in patients with critical size segmental bone defects.

Critical size segmental bone defects represent a challenging problem. Recently, personalized, structured three-dimensional graft cages have been developed to improve ingrowth of autologous bone material and reduce resorption. A 44-year-old patient presented with an open tibial shaft fracture after a motorcycle incident with minor bone loss. Following intramedullary nailing, an acute infection developed that required removal of ~4 cm bone in a circular mode. After multiple interventions, a personalized 3D-printed graft cage was implanted and filled with autologous bone material, harvested by in

Canadian Youth Correctional Officers' Views on Their Work and Relationships With Youth in Their Care.

This study explored the personal perspectives of youth correctional officers within secure and open custody facilities in Ontario. A multi-methods design allowed for quantitative data collection to assess demographics and scores on a relationship scale and qualitative open-ended survey responses to explore areas of interest regarding officer work. Despite a small sample size (N = 26), results indicated trends in officers' views of their work and relationships with youth. Youth officers report various job duties ranging from supervision/security to cleaning and preparing meals. Results indicate

Massive parallel sequencing of head and neck conventional squamous cell carcinomas: A comprehensive review.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and is a cause of significant mortality and morbidity. The epidemiology of this cancer varies worldwide due to either genetic differences in populations or differences in carcinogen exposure. The application of massive parallel sequencing-based techniques in HNSCC should provide a helpful understanding of the genetic alterations that eventually lead to HNSCC development and progression, and ideally, could be used for personalized therapy. In this review, the reader will find an overview of the mutational pr

The Advent of Omics Sciences in Clinical Trials of Motor Neuron Diseases.

The "omics revolution" has totally changed the scientific research approach and is contributing to the development of personalized therapies. In motor neuron diseases (MNDs), a set of complex, multifactorial, late-onset and chronic neurodegenerative diseases, the use of multi-omics approaches in clinical trials is providing new opportunities to stratify patients and develop target therapies. To show how omics science is gaining momentum in MNDs, in this work, we review the interventional clinical trials for MNDs based on the application of omics sciences. We analyze a total of 62 clinical tria

Experimental Models of SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Possible Platforms to Study COVID-19 Pathogenesis and Potential Treatments.

In December 2019, a novel coronavirus crossed species barriers to infect humans and was effectively transmitted from person to person, leading to a worldwide pandemic. Development of effective clinical interventions, including vaccines and antiviral drugs that could prevent or limit theburden or transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a global health priority. It is thus of utmost importance to assess possible therapeutic strategies against SARS-CoV-2 using experimental models that recapitulate aspects of the human disease. Here, we review available mod

Aging, Disability, and Informal Caregivers: A Cross-sectional Study in Portugal.

OBJECTIVES: Aging is pushing states to rethink long-term care policies in several dimensions. This study aims to characterize the reality of dependent older people regarding their demographic and health characteristics, to describe their informal carers and understand the availability of informal care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was developed in Portugal in 2013. Descriptive statistical analyses and binary logistic analysis were conducted. RESULTS: Results show that the informal long-term care sector is primarily aimed at older people with severe limitations in their activities of dail

Pilot study on novel skin care method by augmentation with Staphylococcus epidermidis, an autologous skin microbe--A blinded randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus epidermidis is an autologous bacterium that is beneficial to skin health. Our goal was to develop a novel, personalized basic cosmetic that exploits this characteristic. METHODS: We conducted a double-blinded, randomized clinical trial on augmentation with S. epidermidis as a pilot study, in which S. epidermidis was collected from the subject, cultured for proliferation, and then continuously applied to the subject's own face before sleep twice per week for four weeks in order to increase colonization levels. RESULTS: The results showed that this trea

Urinary incontinence in dementia - a practical approach.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common problem in dementia. Almost invariably, the person with dementia will develop incontinence as the disease progresses. However, the primary reasons for incontinence are often not because of any significant pathology in the urinary system. Rather, it is due to factors outside the urinary system. The term 'functional incontinence' has hence been applied. Maintenance of continence requires mobility, manual dexterity, mental capacit and motivation. Clearly, the person with dementia is vulnerable to developing problems in these domains. OBJECTIVE: This a

[Are mental disorders the cause of reflex sympathetic dystrophy: a review].

Predisposition to reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is defined as personal susceptibility to produce and maintain an excessive reaction in response to nociceptive stimulation. There is suggested that certain psychological traits predispose one to develop RSD, however, some authors claim that emotional and behavioural disturbances are the result rather than the cause of this painful condition. The review of the literature concerning the relations between psychological factors and RSD is presented in the paper. The review revealed no valid evidence to support the opinion that there is particula

Behavioral contagion in sibships.

A behavior is "contagious" if one person is more likely to exhibit it when a relevant other person has already done so. In this sense, behavioral contagion is commonly thought to contribute to many social problems, such as drug abuse and teenage promiscuity. In this paper we focus on behavioral contagion in sibships. Borrowing a model from the theory of contagious diseases, we show that contagion will cause prevalence to increase with sibship size. This model also allows us to estimate the magnitude of the contagious factor relative to non-contagious factors. Finally, we develop two statistica

Dimensions of personality disorder. The DSM-III-R cluster B diagnoses.

This study describes a psychometric approach to refining descriptions of antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders in an attempt to achieve greater distinctiveness. We developed descriptions of each diagnosis from content analysis of the literature. Psychiatrists' ratings were used to organize the features of each diagnosis into a set of carefully defined behavioral dimensions. Self-report scales were developed to assess each dimension. Scales were administered to a general population sample (N = 274) and a sample of patients with a primary diagnosis of persona

Factors affecting seropositivity to human T cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) or lymphadenopathy associated virus (LAV) and progression of disease in sexual partners of patients with AIDS.

Fifty four sexual partners of homosexual men with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were studied, of whom 32 were seropositive and 22 seronegative for human T cell lymphotropic virus type III or lymphadenopathy virus (HTLV-III/LAV) antibody, which showed that repeated exposure by anal intercourse does not necessarily lead to seroconversion. Seropositivity to HTLV-III/LAV was not associated with the absolute number of sexual partners, receptive anal intercourse, or the use of recreational drugs, but was associated with a history of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), partic

Skin Cancers in Australian Liver Transplant Recipients: Risk Factors and Histology.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is one of the most common comorbidities for liver transplant recipients (LTRs). Carcinogenesis is a multifaceted process: immunosuppression and personal risk factors such as smoking status, UV exposure, past history of skin cancer and family history of skin cancer can all play a significant role in determining the extent of skin cancer development. OBJECTIVE: To undertake a large-scale retrospective case matched cohort study examining the effect of personal and transplant related risk factors in cutaneous carcinogenesis. METHODS: A case-control study was performed of

The dynamic of control: A qualitative analysis of the perspectives of patients and family members with palliative care needs on Emergency Medical Services.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred care requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Within palliative medicine, collaboration is further necessary to meet the increasing global demand for palliative care. One area of developing collaboration involves Emergency Medical Services. However, there remains a dearth of research exploring patient and family member perspectives on Emergency Medical Services in palliative situations. OBJECTIVES: To explore perspectives of South African patients and family members with palliative needs concerning Emergency Medical Services use in their care. DESIGN: A qualitativ

From challenge to growth: A qualitative study of parental adaptation to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) profoundly affects family dynamics and parental well-being. While research has often focused on stress and negative outcomes, less is known about the processes and resources that foster adaptation and growth in parents. This qualitative study explored the adaptation process among parents of children with ASD, examining both challenges and transformative experiences, and identifying key personal and contextual factors that support or hinder adjustment. Thirty-six parents (19 mothers, 17 fathers) of children aged 5-11 years with ASD (severity l
