Early inhibitory control and working memory abilities of children prenatally exposed to methadone.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance is the most common method of treating opioid-dependent pregnant women. However, little is known about the impact of prenatal methadone exposure on child neurocognitive development. AIMS: To examine the early executive functioning of children born to methadone-maintained mothers, and to assess relations between executive functioning and later emotional and behavioral adjustment. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal study. PARTICIPANTS: The sample consisted of 68 methadone-exposed children and 88 non-methadone-exposed children. OUTCOME MEASURES: At age 2ye

Behavioral adjustment of toddler and preschool-aged children with single-suture craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to confirm initial reports of elevated behavior problems in children with single-suture craniosynostosis, using multiple informants, longitudinal analyses, and a control group. The authors hypothesized that children with single-suture craniosynostosis would have higher levels of maladjustment than comparison children, particularly at the older age and in selected areas of previously observed vulnerability: attention and social adjustment. METHODS: The Child Behavior Checklist was completed by 436 mothers (219 with single-suture craniosynostosis) and 3

Practical tips for sexual counseling and psychotherapy in premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: A number of milestones in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) have occurred over the past five decades, including the development of various behavioral and cognitive techniques as well as pharmacotherapies that modify neurophysiological processes involved in ejaculation. Nevertheless, the notion that sexual responses such as PE are influenced by physiological, psychobehavioral, cultural, and relationship factors is as valid now as it was 50 years ago, and therefore, interventions should consider all such domains in the development of effective treatment strategies. AIM:

Long-term intellectual and behavioral outcomes of children with febrile convulsions.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-based studies have reported that children with febrile convulsions have subsequent mental retardation and behavior problems. In contrast, population-based studies have reported a better outcome. METHODS: We identified 398 children with febrile convulsions among 14,676 children enrolled in the Child Health and Education Study, a national population-based study in the United Kingdom of children born in one week in April 1970. The children were comprehensively assessed at the age of 10. After excluding 16 children who had neurodevelopmental problems before their first febril

Longitudinal Examination of Wandering in Children and Adolescents With Autism.

Wandering - or leaving a supervised space and/or care of a responsible person - disproportionately affects children with autism and can lead to serious injury. We describe parent-reported wandering in children with autism in early childhood and adolescence and characterize wandering in adolescence. Of 258 teens with autism enrolled in the Study to Explore Early Development, caregivers reported that 45% never wandered, 41% wandered only in early childhood, and 14% wandered at least once in adolescence (including 9% that wandered at both time points). Childhood externalizing behavior problems we

Neonatal Nucleus Accumbens Microstructure Modulates Individual Susceptibility to Preconception Maternal Stress in Relation to Externalizing Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal stress influences in utero brain development and is a modifiable risk factor for offspring psychopathologies. Reward circuitry dysfunction underlies various internalizing and externalizing psychopathologies. This study examined (1) the association between maternal stress and microstructural characteristics of the neonatal nucleus accumbens (NAcc), a major node of the reward circuitry, and (2) whether neonatal NAcc microstructure modulates individual susceptibility to maternal stress in relation to childhood behavioral problems. METHOD: K-means longitudinal cluster analysis

The Staggered Spondaic Word Test. A ten-minute look at the central nervous system through the ears.

We have described three major groupings that encompass most auditory processing difficulties. While the problems may be superimposed upon one another in any individual client, each diagnostic sign is closely associated with particular communication and learning disorders. In addition, these behaviors may be related back to the functional anatomy of the regions that are implicated by the SSW test. The auditory-decoding group is deficient in rapid analysis of speech. The vagueness of speech sound knowledge is thought to lead to auditory misunderstanding and confusion. In early life, this may be

Testicular tumors other than germ cell tumors.

A heterogeneous group of neoplasms other than those of germ cell type may involve the testis. These tumors vary greatly in their histologic appearances and biologic behavior, and accurate pathologic interpretation is essential to patient care. This review of these various neoplasms emphasizes pathologic aspects, particularly problems in differential diagnosis that may arise.

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the ethmoid sinus.

This article represents the fourth and fifth reported cases of GCRG that involve the ethmoid sinus. The problems encountered in establishing the diagnosis are emphasized, as are the features that differentiate it from the giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, and hyperparathyroidism, the conditions with which it is most commonly confused. The unusually aggressive behavior, as demonstrated by these two cases, is highlighted.

Mother abuse: a matter of youth justice, child welfare or domestic violence?

International evidence suggests that in advanced welfare states the abuse of parents, most particularly mothers, by their (most frequently male) adolescent children is increasingly prevalent. In the United Kingdom, however, child-to-mother abuse remains one of the most under-acknowledged and under-researched forms of family violence. Although it is an issue shrouded in silence, stigma, and shame, the authors' work in the youth justice sphere, focusing on interventions to deal with anti-social behaviour, suggests that adolescent violence toward mothers is a topical and prevalent issue. We ident

Evidence-based practice in group work with incarcerated youth.

As a result of the Youth Criminal Justice Act's increased focus on restorative justice, treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration of youth, many more juvenile offenders require mental health services while resident in youth detention facilities [Youth Criminal Justice Act (2002, c.1). Ottawa: Department of Justice Canada. Retrieved September 19, 2008 from http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/Y-1.5]. Several common characteristics such as violence, aggression, and other antisocial behaviors, associated with criminal behavior, have been identified among male and female offenders. Cognitive and behavioral characteristics of turner syndrome: exploring a role for ovarian hormones in female sexual differentiation.

To better understand factors contributing to behavioral development, we studied patients with Turner syndrome (TS), a disorder typically marked by prenatal onset of ovarian dysfunction. We compared girls and women (ages 12 and up) with TS (n = 21) to matched controls (n = 21) in cognitive and motor skills, as well as sex-typed personality characteristics and activity preferences. Measures were categorized (based on prior studies) as showing an average male advantage (male-superior measures), female advantage (female-superior measures), or no sex difference (sex-neutral measures). It was hypoth

[Time, cultures, and coexistence].

"In this essay, the authors try to illustrate the relevance of the sociology of time for the study of migration and inter-cultural relations. It is argued that by taking the time-dimension more explicitly into account, our insights in the dynamics of these relations can be [improved].... In connection with international migration processes, this relationship appears to be influenced by at least six different factors: 1) the sudden transition from a rural to an urban, industrial environment; 2) the perspective of the return to the homeland; 3) the confrontation with the culture of the host coun

Testing the Localization Landscape Theory on the Bethe Lattice.

The localization landscape theory (LLT) provides a classical picture of Anderson localization by introducing an effective confining potential whose percolation is proposed to coincide with the mobility edge. Although this proposal shows remarkable numerical agreement in three dimensions, its fundamental validity remains unsettled. Here we test the LLT analytically on the Bethe lattice, where both the Anderson localization transition and the LLT percolation problem are exactly solvable. We find that the two transitions do not coincide, and their critical behaviors differ markedly. In particular

Higher score of diabetes eating problem survey-revised (DEPS-R) is associated with poor glycemic control among Brazilian patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM): A brief report.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The diabetes eating problem survey-revised (DEPS-R) questionnaire is a specific and valuable tool for assessing disturbed eating behavior in type 1 diabetes mellitus. The literature suggests an association between a higher DEPS-R score and worse metabolic control; however, these figures have not been described in patients from Latin America. METHODS: We evaluated 58 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus from a Brazilian outpatient clinic using the DEPS-R questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, 23 participants with a high risk for high eating disorder behaviors exhibited signif

The Development of Social Categorization.

Social categorization is a universal mechanism for making sense of a vast social world with roots in perceptual, conceptual, and social systems. These systems emerge strikingly early in life and undergo important developmental changes across childhood. The development of social categorization entails identifying which ways of classifying people are culturally meaningful, how these categories might be used to predict, explain, and evaluate the behavior of other people, and how one's own identity relates to these systems of categorization and representation. Social categorization can help childr
