[Shaft fractures of the upper extremities and concomitant injuries : Epidemiology, classification, diagnostics and clinical relevance].

Shaft fractures of the upper extremities represent a significant challenge in trauma surgery due to their functional importance. The epidemiological analysis reveals characteristic distribution patterns: humeral shaft fractures (1.2-5% of all fractures) show a bimodal age distribution, with peaks at 20-30 years and above 60 years. Forearm shaft fractures (13.8/100,000 inhabitants [1]) occur particularly frequently in children and decrease with advancing age. The classification primarily follows the AO/OTA system, which was comprehensively revised in 2018, supplemented by specific classificatio

Robotically Assisted Medial Reduction Osteotomy: A Technique Based on the Pythagorean Theorem.

Varus deformity can present a significant challenge for limb alignment correction and balancing in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). One technique to address these challenges is a medial reduction osteotomy. This article describes utilization of a robotic platform to perform a safe and accurate medial subtraction osteotomy prior to balancing and bony resections. Deformity correction can be predicted by the Pythagorean Theorem. Computed tomography-based robotic systems can be used to perform medial reduction osteotomy of the tibia in the setting of significant varus deformity in patients undergoin

Transient lateral patellar dislocation resulting in osteochondral lesion of the lateral femoral condyle: a case series of findings on cone beam CT.

Transient lateral patellar dislocation (TLPD) occurs most often in young active individuals. Although relatively common, they tend to spontaneously reduce and can be difficult to accurately diagnose. The typical pattern of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings following TLPD has been well documented in the literature and are known to frequently result in osteochondral lesions (OCL) in up to 70% of cases. However, the emergence of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as an imaging technique is in its relative infancy and the associated corresponding findings are less well established. We de

Development of micro-sequestra and associated histological changes in tooth extraction sockets of zoledronate-treated mice.

OBJECTIVES: Administration of bisphosphonates to mice do not always impair healing after tooth extraction. However, it is unclear whether there are any histological differences between the macroscopically healed extraction sockets of bisphosphonate- and saline-injected mice. METHODS: Mice received a single intravenous injection of 540 μg/kg zoledronic acid or saline, and the maxillary first molars were extracted one week later. Healing of the extraction sockets was examined histologically and by micro-computed tomography. RESULTS: Zoledronic acid and saline did not impair gross wound healing

Efficacy of near-infrared spectroscopy in diagnosing skin and soft tissue infections: A single-center retrospective study.

AIM: Skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) is classified as necrotizing fasciitis (NF) or cellulitis based on the invasion depth of the lesion. Cellulitis has a good prognosis and improves with conservative treatment, whereas NF has a poor prognosis with rapid progression requiring prompt debridement of the wound and intensive care control. Therefore, they should be differentiated quickly and accurately; however, a useful diagnostic method, except for the surgical test incision, remains to be established. This study aimed to verify the usefulness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure

Two cases of myeloid sarcoma of the mediastinum.

Myeloid sarcoma is a malignancy characterized by the excessive proliferation of immature myeloid cells or myeloblasts, leading to tumor formation outside the bone marrow. This condition often manifests before or after the onset of acute myeloid leukemia or during a relapse following initial remission. Myeloid sarcoma develops in any organs or parts of the body, but its occurrence in the mediastinum is rare. We report 2 cases of myeloid sarcoma in the mediastinum. The first case was a 63-year-old woman who experienced exertional dyspnea and was found to have a mediastinal mass along with a left

Face to Face With Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is responsible for most cases of primary kidney neoplasms, many of which are asymptomatic until an advanced stage. According to the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), in primary health care, family doctors (FD) hold a privileged position in the early diagnosis of the disease's natural history. This case presents a 61-year-old man who sought consultation with his FD for swelling in the right frontal region with a two-week history. He denied trauma or accompanying symptoms. Clinically, he presented with a right frontal swelling, 3 cm in diameter, tender to p

Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains the dominant pathogen in osteomyelitis of the temporal bone.

Osteomyelitis of the temporal bone (OTB) is a rare inflammatory disease that can spread from the ear canal to adjacent soft tissue and bone structures. This expansion is challenging to treat and thus can become life-threatening. The detection of the causative pathogen is crucial for successful therapy. Current studies have revealed a diverse spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms in OTB. The aim of our study was to compare the microbiological background of our OTB-patients with data in recent literature. In this retrospective, single-center study patients diagnosed with OTB over a 10-year period

Peripheral Osteoma of the Maxillary Sinus in a Patient Planned for Sinus Augmentation.

Osteomas are slow-growing benign tumors that almost exclusively occur in the craniofacial region and more often in the ethmoid air cells. When they occasionally occur in the maxillary sinuses, they can interfere with dental procedures like sinus augmentation. This study presents the case of a 59-year-old male patient who was treated for sinus augmentation of the left maxillary sinus. During the treatment planning phase, a peripheral osteoma was identified with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as an incidental finding without any clinical signs or symptoms. The sinus augmentation procedure
