Objective Recognition of Tinnitus Location Using Electroencephalography Connectivity Features.

Purpose: Tinnitus is a common but obscure auditory disease to be studied. This study will determine whether the connectivity features in electroencephalography (EEG) signals can be used as the biomarkers for an efficient and fast diagnosis method for chronic tinnitus. Methods: In this study, the resting-state EEG signals of tinnitus patients with different tinnitus locations were recorded. Four connectivity features [including the Phase-locking value (PLV), Phase lag index (PLI), Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), and Transfer entropy (TE)] and two time-frequency domain features in the EEG

[From reconstruction to function : Hands-on training in tympanoplasty using real-time feedback].

BACKGROUND: Surgery of the middle ear requires a very high level of fine motor skills. Due to the increased potential for complications in middle ear operations, it is appropriate to acquire these skills beforehand by operating on a model. OBJECTIVE: How satisfactory is the training on suitable models? Are the skills acquired from working on a model transferable to intraoperative situations? Will the type of model and its use for training influence ear surgery in the future? MATERIAL AND METHODS: Available publications and own experiences with the Dresden tympanoplasty model (DTM) are analyz

Increased Central Nervous System Interleukin-8 in a Majority Postlaminectomy Syndrome Chronic Pain Population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple processes have been identified as potential contributors to chronic pain, with increasing evidence illustrating an association with aberrant levels of neuroimmune mediators. The primary objectives of the present study were to examine central nervous system cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors present in a chronic pain population and to explore patterns of the same mediator molecules over time. Secondary objectives explored the relationship of central and peripheral neuroimmune mediators while examining the levels of anxiety, depression, sleep quality, a

Convergent BOLD and Beta-Band Activity in Superior Temporal Sulcus and Frontolimbic Circuitry Underpins Human Emotion Cognition.

The processing of social information in the human brain is widely distributed neuroanatomically and finely orchestrated over time. However, a detailed account of the spatiotemporal organization of these key neural underpinnings of human social cognition remains to be elucidated. Here, we applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in the same participants to investigate spatial and temporal neural patterns evoked by viewing videos of facial muscle configurations. We show that observing the emergence of expressions elicits sustained blood oxygenation le

Speech, language, and reading skills after early cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether age at cochlear implantation or duration of implant use is associated with speech, language, and reading skills exhibited at age 8 to 9 years in children who underwent implantation by age 5 years. DESIGN: Performance outcomes in speech perception, speech production, language, and reading were examined in terms of the age at which children first received a cochlear implant (2, 3, or 4 years), the age they received an updated (Spectra) processor, and the duration of use of an implant and an updated processor. SETTING: Data collection was conducted at summer resear

Stakeholders' Perceptions of Benefits of and Barriers to Using Video-Observed Treatment for Monitoring Patients With Tuberculosis in Uganda: Exploratory Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to treatment remains a barrier to tuberculosis (TB) control. Directly observed therapy (DOT) is the standard for monitoring adherence to TB treatment worldwide, but its implementation is challenging, especially in resource-limited settings. DOT is labor-intensive and inconvenient to both patients and health care workers. Video DOT (VDOT) is a novel patient-centered alternative that uses mobile technology to observe patients taking medication remotely. However, the perceptions and acceptability of potential end users have not been evaluated in Africa. OBJECTIVE: This s

Spread of excitation varies for different electrical pulse shapes and stimulation modes in cochlear implants.

In cochlear implants (CI) bipolar (BP) electrical stimulation has been suggested as a method to reduce the spread of current along the cochlea. However, behavioral measurements in BP mode have shown either similar or worse performance than in monopolar (MP) mode. This could be explained by a bimodal excitation pattern, with two main excitation peaks at the sites of the stimulating electrodes. We measured the spread of excitation (SOE) by means of the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP), obtained using the forward-masked paradigm. The aim was to measure the bimodality of the ex

Impaired early visual response modulations to spatial information in chronic schizophrenia.

Early visual processing stages have been demonstrated to be impaired in schizophrenia patients and their first-degree relatives. The amplitude and topography of the P1 component of the visual evoked potential (VEP) are both affected; the latter of which indicates alterations in active brain networks between populations. At least two issues remain unresolved. First, the specificity of this deficit (and suitability as an endophenotype) has yet to be established, with evidence for impaired P1 responses in other clinical populations. Second, it remains unknown whether schizophrenia patients exhibi

Implementation of objective structured clinical examination among midwifery and nursing educators at South and Central Region Universities in Ethiopia, 2023.

INTRODUCTION: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a well-known clinical skill evaluation tool that has been applied worldwide to teach and assess learners' competencies in healthcare disciplines. Poor implementation of OSCE can lead to inaccurate assessments and ultimately result in the production of incompetent professionals. However, there is no evidence of the implementation status and factors that limit the much-needed OSCE practice in the study area. OBJECTIVE: To assess OSCE implementation among midwifery and nursing educators in the South and Central region of Ethio

Understandings of ultra-processed foods among adults with responsibility for household food activities in the United Kingdom: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence that ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are associated with many non-communicable diseases. In the United Kingdom (UK), UPFs account for more than half of mean daily energy intake. There is limited evidence describing how individuals make sense of UPFs in their daily lives. In this study, we aim to explore public perceptions of UPFs and their relationship to health; how these are shaped by different information sources; whether perceptions influence purchasing and consumption; and proposed solutions for reducing UPF consumption. METHODS: We undertook 30 qu

Hierarchical differences in the encoding of amplitude modulation in the subcortical auditory system of awake nonhuman primates.

Sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM) is a key feature of complex sounds. Although psychophysical studies have characterized SAM perception, and neurophysiological studies in anesthetized animals report a transformation from the cochlear nucleus' (CN; brainstem) temporal code to the inferior colliculus' (IC; midbrain's) rate code, none have used awake animals or nonhuman primates to compare CN and IC's coding strategies to modulation-frequency perception. To address this, we recorded single-unit responses and compared derived neurometric measures in the CN and IC to psychometric measures of mo

Assessing stigma: Health and social worker regard towards working with people using illicit drugs in Athens, Greece.

BACKGROUND: After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and resulting economic austerity, the rise in illicit drug use engendered an increased need for people who use drugs (PWUD) to access medical care, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Research shows that perceptions of medical staff towards PWUD facilitate or act as a barrier to accessing health care. This study provides a better understanding of health and social work professionals' perceptions by assessing stigma levels towards PWUD in Athens, Greece. METHODS: This is a mixed-method study. It calculates the stigma score for professionals (

Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the perception of home meals and meal-related variables: A large-scale study within the Italian population during the acute phase of the pandemic.

Italy was the first European country struck by the COVID-19 epidemic and experienced a national lockdown. This study explored the effect of lockdown on the perception of any meals prepared and/or conducted at home (home meals) and investigated which variables played a role in this. A group of Italians (n = 3,060) not suspected/diagnosed as having COVID-19 (18-91 years old; 33% males) completed an online survey during the first lockdown (April 2020). Liking for home meals either increased (51% of the population) or did not vary (43%), while it decreased for only 6% of respondents. Total meal in

Enthusiasm for Introducing and Integrating HIV Self-Testing but Doubts About Users: A Baseline Qualitative Analysis of Key Stakeholders' Attitudes and Perceptions in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Senegal.

Since 2019, the ATLAS project, coordinated by Solthis in collaboration with national AIDS programs, has introduced, promoted and delivered HIV self-testing (HIVST) in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Senegal. Several delivery channels have been defined, including key populations: men who have sex with men, female sex workers and people who use injectable drugs. At project initiation, a qualitative study analyzing the perceptions and attitudes of key stakeholders regarding the introduction of HIVST in their countries and its integration with other testing strategies for key populations was conducted. Exploring the directionality in the relationship between descriptive and injunctive parental and peer norms and snacking behavior in a three-year-cross-lagged study.

BACKGROUND: People's eating behavior is assumed to be influenced by what other people do (perceived descriptive norms) and what others approve of (perceived injunctive norms). It has been suggested that adolescents are more susceptible to peer norms than parental norms, because they experience a strong need for group acceptance that leads to conforming to peer group norms. The current study examined changes in snacking behavior and four types of social norms (i.e., parental and peer descriptive and injunctive norms) that promoted fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents. This study was the

Stimulation strategies for selective activation of retinal ganglion cell soma and threshold reduction.

OBJECTIVE: Retinal prosthetic implants restore partial vision to patients blinded due to outer retinal degeneration, using a camera-guided multielectrode array (MEA) that electrically stimulates surviving retinal neurons. Commercial epi-retinal prostheses use millisecond-scale charge-balanced, symmetric, cathodic-first biphasic pulses to depolarize retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and bipolar cells (BCs), frequently creating oblong perceptions of light related to axonal activation of RGCs. Stimulation strategies that avoid axonal stimulation and decrease the threshold of targeted neurons may sign

Barriers and facilitators to STI and HIV testing among African and Caribbean heritage communities in high-income countries mapped to the behaviour change wheel: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: African and Caribbean communities in high-income countries face disproportionate sexually transmitted infection (STI) risks. In the US, the gonorrhoea rate among non-Hispanic Blacks is 7.7 times greater than that among non-Hispanic Whites, and the chlamydia rate is 5.6 times greater. In the UK, black Caribbeans have the highest gonorrhoea and chlamydia rates among all ethnic minority groups. Identifying barriers to and facilitators of HIV/STI testing is crucial for developing effective interventions. This scoping review maps current evidence on multilevel factors influencing STI te

Slow‑releasing CO donor CORM‑A1 modulates depression‑like behavior in experimental model of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

Chronic pain conditions are often linked with depression, a common chronic mental health disorder that severely impairs quality of life. This association is particularly present in chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). CP/CPPS is a prevalent urological disorder characterized by pelvic pain accompanied by neuropsychiatric comorbidities such as  depression, for which underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Recently, anti‑inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of carbon monoxide‑releasing molecules (CORMs) have been demonstrated. The aim of this study was
