The prevalence and clinical importance of incidental soft-tissue findings in cervical CT scans of trauma population.

OBJECTIVES: To define the age-related prevalence of incidental soft-tissue findings in cervical CT scans of a trauma population and to investigate their clinical importance. METHODS: The original diagnostic radiology reports and the CT images of the 357 patients with cervical trauma were retrospectively evaluated. Incidental soft-tissue findings were investigated. All findings were grouped according to age. The findings were classified based on their clinical importance into three categories: Category 1: no clinical importance, Category 2: possible clinical importance requiring further invest

Asymptomatic subjects with zero coronary calcium score: coronary CT angiographic features of plaques in event-prone patients.

The aims of this study were: (a) to assess clinical predictors and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) characteristics of noncalcified coronary plaques (NCP) in subjects who had cardiac events despite a zero coronary artery calcium score (CACS), and (b) to describe computed tomography (CT) plaque characteristics in subjects with cardiac events. A total of 7,961 subjects with zero CACS were evaluated; 6,531 subjects underwent CCTA as part of a health check-up. Those who had zero CACS were included in our mid-term follow-up study. Cardiac events included cardiac death, acute coronary

Screening results for subclinical coronary artery calcification in asymptomatic individuals in relation to a detailed parental history of premature coronary heart disease.

A parental history of premature coronary heart disease (CHD) is an established risk factor for CHD events in descendants. The study aim was to investigate whether subclinical coronary artery calcification (CAC) differs between asymptomatic individuals (a) without a parental CHD history, (b) with a parental history and (c) without knowledge of parental CHD history. The inclusion of individuals without knowledge of parental CHD history is a new approach. We also differentiated between CHD of mother and father to gain insight into their individual contributions. Data was obtained for 4,301 subjec

Attention-enhanced segmentation network for automated cerebral microbleed detection and burden assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small hemorrhagic lesions visible as hypointense foci on susceptibility-sensitive MRI and are established biomarkers of stroke risk and amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA-H) in patients receiving anti-amyloid therapy. However, automated detection remains challenging because true CMBs closely resemble veins, calcifications, and susceptibility artifacts. This visual ambiguity results in a persistent precision-recall trade-off, where models optimized for high sensitivity tend to generate excessive false positives, while precision-focused mode

[Vascular access in diabetic patients. Are these patients "difficult"?].

Diabetics with stage V chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) are considered as "difficult patients", because of problems with creation of the vascular access. There is controversy regarding the results and recommendations for preparation of the vascular access in these patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the results of creating different types of arteriovenous fistula (AVFs) in consecutive series of patients starting dialysis treatment. The analysis was performed in 741 patients (385 females and 356 males), average age 61.4±7 years, who started dialysis tr

Mineral Bone Disorders in Chronic Kidney Disease Stages 3 and 4 With Special Reference to Bone Mineral Density Assessment Using Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) Scan: A Prospective Observational Study From Northeast India.

Background Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) is a systemic complication characterized by biochemical disturbances in calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and vitamin D metabolism. These abnormalities impair bone strength and promote vascular calcification, increasing fracture and cardiovascular risk. Early CKD stages (3 and 4) provide an opportunity for detection and intervention. Data on Indian pre-dialysis populations remain limited. Objectives This study aimed to describe the clinical and biochemical characteristics of CKD-MBD in patients with CKD stages 3…

Giant left main coronary artery aneurysm in a young adult female with suspected incomplete Kawasaki disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis predominantly occurring in pediatric populations. Giant coronary artery aneurysm (gCAA) involving the left main coronary artery (LMCA) is an extremely rare long-term complication of KD. Adult-onset or late-diagnosed KD-related giant LMCA aneurysm in young female patients represents a rare clinical entity with high risks of intracoronary thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death. Due to absent classic childhood KD symptoms, such aneurysms are commonly misdiagnosed as atherosclerotic lesions or congenital coronary malfo

New Cardiovascular Risk Biomarkers in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Implications and Clinical Utility-A Narrative Review.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that not only causes joint inflammation but also significantly increases the risk … its role in RA-related CVD remains under investigation. Finally, Fet-A, a glycoprotein involved in vascular calcification, shows potential as a biomarker for CV events in RA, though data on its role remain conflicting. These biomarkers provide deeper insights into the pathophysiology of RA and its cardiovascular comorbidities. Although some biomarkers show promise in i …

Age-related changes in the biochemical composition of the human aorta and their correlation with the delamination strength.

Various studies have correlated the mechanical properties of the aortic wall with its biochemical parameters and inner structure. Very few studies have addressed correlations with the cohesive properties, which are crucial for understanding fracture phenomena such as aortic dissection, i.e. a life-threatening process. Aimed at filling this gap, we conducted a comprehensive biochemical and histological analysis of human aortas (the ascending and descending thoracic and infrarenal abdominal aorta) from 34 cadavers obtained post-mortem during regular autopsies. The pentosidine, hydroxyproline and

Higher levels of circulating desphospho-uncarboxylated matrix Gla protein over time are associated with worse survival: the prospective Maastricht Intensive Care COVID cohort.

BACKGROUND: Extra-hepatic vitamin K-status, measured by dephosphorylated uncarboxylated matrix Gla protein (dp-ucMGP), maintains vascular health, with high levels reflecting poor vitamin K status. The occurrence of extra-hepatic vitamin K deficiency throughout the disease of COVID-19 and possible associations with pulmonary embolism (PE), and mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients has not been studied. The aim of this study was to investigated the association between dp-ucMGP, at endotracheal intubation (ETI) and both ICU and six months mortality. Furthermore, we studied the associati

Pathobiology of the Klotho Antiaging Protein and Therapeutic Considerations.

The α-Klotho protein (henceforth denoted Klotho) has antiaging properties, as first observed in mice homozygous for a hypomorphic Klotho gene (kl/kl). These mice have a shortened lifespan, stunted growth, renal disease, hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, vascular calcification, cardiac hypertrophy, hypertension, pulmonary disease, cognitive impairment, multi-organ atrophy and fibrosis. Overexpression of Klotho has opposite effects, extending lifespan. In humans, Klotho levels decline with age, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions. Low Klotho levels correlat…
