This work describes a new method to detect antimitochondrial antibodies using indirect immunofluorescence on mouse sperm as substrate. As controls conventional substrates and mitochondrial protein immunoblots were used. A 78 years old male patient with diarrhea, hyponatremia and hypokalemia caused by a gigantic rectal villous adenoma is presented. A Chagas megacolon was also found. The patient was operated, finding an vast soft polypoid lesion that occupied all the rectum and inferior sigmoid colon, a megarectum and megasigmoid. A symptomatic megaesophagus was demonstrated in a three months old boy with Chagas disease. He had a difficult evolution with frequent aspiration pneumonias and progressive undernutrition. At 14 years old a cardiomyotomy (Heller's procedure) was performed, with good results that allowed a near normal life. At 27 years old, the patient started with progressive dysphagia due to an epidermoid esophageal carcinoma and died after surgery. Since a higher frequency of esophageal carcinoma is observed in achalasia, periodic endoscopic examinations are mandatory.

The aim of this study was to look for pathological changes in the oral cavity in a group of 40 non cirrhotic male alcoholics, ranging in age from 30 to 40 years old. These subjects were compared with a group of 40 non alcoholic male subjects of similar age. The presence of lip, dental, periodontal, salivary gland and oral mucosa lesions was recorded. Hemangiopericytoma is an infrequent tumor of vascular origin derived from Zimmermann's pericyte cells. Recent studies strongly suggest that Helicobacter pylori might have a significant role in the pathogenesis and rate of recurrence of peptic duodenal ulcer. Various factors, such as the existence of ulcerogenic strains of the bacteria and susceptible subjects, might explain the fact that not more than 10% of the patients infected with H pylori actually have duodenal ulcer. Its association with gastric ulcer and gastric carcinoma is not well defined.

Antiandrogens are substances that block androgen receptors. The antiandrogenic action of some of these medications, as H2 blockers and some diuretics, was discovered as a collateral effect. They are used for the treatment of acne, hirsutism and seborrhea in women; they are also used in precocious puberty and sexual hyperexcitability states. The clinical usefulness of these drugs is unquestionable, but their prescription requires a through knowledge of their endocrinological effects.

Aiming to know the incidence and evolution of major adverse reactions to propylthiouracil in patients with hyperthyroidism, we performed a retrospective analysis of 586 patients treated between 1982 and 1992. All known complications associated to the use of propylthiouracil were considered major adverse reactions, when other causes were discarded.
