From 1955 to 1987 414 children with supracondylar fractures of the humerus were treated at the surgical department of the University of Erlangen. Most important for the choice of treatment in supracondylar fractures was the classification of Baumann. 33 children concerning stage I were treated with cuff and collar or cast. Out of 381 patients with stage II and III Baumann's extension was used in 352 children; 29 had to be operated. The operation was indicated in a further 56 children. 20 of these had a lesion of the condylus radialis, 18 of the epicondylus ulnaris, 8 children showed diacondyla

Late results after operative treatment of 59 bicondylar fractures were excellent in 38% and fair or poor in 35%. Classic Y- and T-types are rare (30.5%), while comminution and soft tissue lesions (50.7%) are frequent and worsen the prognosis. In about three-fourths of fractures functional rehabilitation is possible after internal fixation according to AO principles. With advanced age and poor bone stock early functional nonoperative treatment is advisable, even though nonunion must be expected to follow in such patients. Closed pinning may be a reasonable alternative in similar situations, and

The posttraumatic synostosis between radius and ulna is one of a rare but grave complication in case of forearm-fracture. Only a few successful treated case-reports are described. This case reports upon a young man with a second-degree open elbow-joint-debris-fracture. Following a proximal radio-ulnar-synostosis happened. Eight months posttraumatic the radio-ulnar-synostosis was operatively eliminated. Subsequent an intermediate dura-cuff was implanted after partial resection of the membrana interossea.

Emphasis is placed on the value of treating supracondylar fractures of the elbow with displacement (stages III and IV) in children by means of the technique described, in 1959, by J. Séror, J. Rives, J. Frailong, and Cl. Azoulay: "open sky" reduction through a twofold internal and external paratricipital posterior approach; maintenance of reduction by two Kirschner wires entering by the epicondyle and epitrochlear, with fixation into the opposite diaphysial cortex, and sectioned and curved inwards in order to remain subcutaneous. Analysis of the results of 100 cases treated in this manner betw

Obstetrical fracture has not a bad character, because of quick healing and, above all, because of extraordinary modelling by growth. The authors record 33 fractures of long bones which confirm this good prognosis. 20 birth fractures of the clavicule associated with brachial plexus palsies are recorded on account of their pathogenic, diagnostic and therapeutic intricacies. Prognosis of obstetrical traumatic separation of the epiphysis (epiphysiolysis) would be more preoccupying. This feeling is not given off the series of 28 observations recorded which conern 13 upper humeral, 6 lower humeral e

BACKGROUND: Patients often ask their doctors when they can safely return to driving after orthopaedic injuries and procedures, but the data regarding this topic are diverse and sometimes conflicting. Some studies provide observer-reported outcome measures, such as brake response time or simulators, to estimate when patients can safely resume driving after surgery, and patient survey data describing when patients report a return to driving, but they do not all agree. We performed a systematic review and quality appraisal for available data regarding when patients are safe to resume driving afte

PURPOSE: Radial head arthroplasty is widely used for unreconstructable radial head fractures, particularly in complex elbow trauma, yet long-term outcomes remain poorly documented. This study aimed to assess implant survival and clinical outcomes after radial head arthroplasty performed for traumatic fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study included patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty between 1997 and 2017 with a minimum follow-up of seven years. The primary outcome was implant survival, defined as absence of revision or implant removal. Secondary outcomes included

BACKGROUND: Intraarticular distal humeral fractures of AO/OTA type 13 C2 and C3 pose a surgical challenge despite the evolution of surgical implants and techniques. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is often preferred as the first choice of treatment, but the results vary and are sometimes disappointing. Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) has been widely used for fractures that are not amenable to ORIF in elderly patients, but the mechanical complications remain a challenge, especially in active patients. Elbow hemiarthroplasty (EHA) provides a modern alternative that might avoid the mec

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) recurrence after joint surgery is always a disturbing problem for patients and surgeons. Our study was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of celecoxib in preventing the recurrence of HO after open arthrolysis for post-traumatic elbow stiffness.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied 152 patients with stiff elbows caused by post-traumatic HO. After surgery, 77 patients received celecoxib (200 mg once daily) for 28 days, whereas 75 did not. Radiographic evaluation was performed at 3, 6, and 9 months postoperatively. Univariate and multivariate ana

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the efficacy of osteosynthesis in situ by evaluating the functional and cosmetic results in children with nonunion of lateral condyle fractures.
METHODS: Sixteen consecutive patients were treated with in situ fixation consisting of minimal curettage of fracture gap and screw compression of metaphyseal fragments without bone grafting. The mean age at the time of surgery was 5.6 years (range, 1 to 10 y). The mean interval between the initial lateral condylar fracture and surgery was 4.8 months (range, 3 to 12 mo). The average amount of displacement measured o

BACKGROUND: Despite the good results that are usually reported after fixation at the sites of olecranon fractures and osteotomies, problems such as loss of fixation, nonunion, and the need for revision surgery are still encountered. Various types of fixation have been recommended, but few have been evaluated with use of clinically relevant cyclic load testing at appropriate levels of stress. The purpose of the present study was to test multiple olecranon fixation techniques under physiologic cyclic loads.
METHODS: We studied ten cadaveric elbows with use of cyclic loading that simulated (1) a

Because of increasing participation in leisure sports and exercise rehabilitation programs, many patients are developing nonsurgical, soft tissue overuse syndromes. Many of these musculoskeletal problems arise because of underlying biomechanical difficulties, training errors, or improper use of equipment. Epidemiologic observations reveal that these individuals frequently visit a general medical practitioner before seeking the advice of an orthopedic specialist. Prompt diagnosis simply requires an appreciation of anatomy and an analytic understanding of sports biomechanics. Although compulsive

OBJECTIVE: Intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) is a promising method for activating the spinal cord distal to an injury. The objectives of this study were to examine the ability of chronically implanted stimulating wires within the cervical spinal cord to (1) directly produce forelimb movements, and (2) assess whether ISMS stimulation could improve subsequent volitional control of paretic extremities following injury.
APPROACH: We developed a technique for implanting intraspinal stimulating electrodes within the cervical spinal cord segments C6-T1 of Long-Evans rats. Beginning 4 weeks after a

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes muscle weakness or paralysis, with functional deficits partly due to motor neuron damage near or below the injury level. Understanding how damage affects the morphology and function of motor neurons and the muscle fibers they innervate (i.e., motor units [MUs]) is important for characterizing motor pathophysiology. We assessed MU electrophysiological properties in muscles innervated near the injury zone (anconeus: C7; extensor indicis [EI]: C8-T1) in motor-incomplete cervical SCI and controls. The EI of 14 SCI participants (48.2 ± 14.6 years; 1 female; C2:1, C4:

PURPOSE: To determine, using multivariate regression, whether patient-reported outcomes are associated with surgical timing to account for differences between groups.
METHODS: Patients who underwent acromioclavicular (AC) joint surgery from 2010 to 2019 were included if they underwent primary AC joint surgery for a Rockwood grade III-V AC joint separation. Chart review was conducted to determine time from injury to surgery, Rockwood injury grade, and surgical technique. INTRODUCTION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Human scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, leading to skin damage and subsequent mechanical irritation from scratching. This impaired skin integrity predisposes individuals to skin infections. While the association between scabies and skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes is well-documented, there is limited literature on the risk of surgical site infections in such cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report aims to explore this risk by presenting a case of surgical site infectio
