Manganese-enhanced MRI of layer-specific activity in the visual cortex from awake and free-moving rats.

Cortical responses to visual stimulation have been studied extensively in the rodent, but often require post-stimulation ex vivo examination of the tissue. Here, we test the hypothesis that visual stimulus-dependent cortical activity from awake and free-moving rats can be encoded following systemically administered MnCl(2), and activity subsequently readout using manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI), a technique that can be performed without sacrificing the animal. Unanesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats, with or without systemic injection of MnCl(2), were maintained for 8 h in either a visually stimulat

Quantitative tractography metrics of white matter integrity in diffusion-tensor MRI.

We present new quantitative diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) tractography-based metrics for assessing cerebral white matter integrity. These metrics extend prior work in this area. Tractography models of cerebral white matter were produced from each subject's DTI data. The models are a set of curves (e.g., "streamtubes") derived from DTI data that represent the underlying topography of the cerebral white matter. Nine metrics were calculated in whole brain tractography models and in three "tracts-of-interest": transcallosal fibers and the left and right cingulum bundles. The metrics included the

Flow-sensitive four-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging: flow patterns in ascending aortic aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: Pathological aortic flow patterns differ significantly from haemodynamics within the healthy aorta. Development and impact of pathological flow is largely unknown and might affect pathogenesis and the progression of thoracic aortic diseases. This study presents pathological blood-flow patterns within a series of six patients suffering from ascending aortic aneurysms investigated with high-detail flow-sensitive, four-dimensional (4D)-MRI and three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided flow-visualisation strategies. METHODS: Data were acquired on a 3T magnetic resonance system (TRIO, Sieme

Retrospective cross-evaluation of an histological and deformable 3D atlas of the basal ganglia on series of Parkinsonian patients treated by deep brain stimulation.

In functional neurosurgery, there is a growing need for accurate localization of the functional targets. Since deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the Vim thalamic nucleus has been proposed for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, the target has evolved toward the globus pallidus and subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the therapeutic indications have enlarged to include psychiatric disorders such as Tourette syndrome or obsessive compulsive disorders. In these pathologies, the target has been restrained to smaller functional subterritories of the basal ganglia, requiring more refined techniques to loc

Report of the Radionuclides in Nephrourology Committee for evaluation of transplanted kidney (review of techniques).

Comprehensive evaluation of renal transplants has been important in differential diagnosis of medical and surgical complications in the early post-transplantation period and in the long-term follow-up. If performed well, it yields excellent functional and good anatomic information about the graft that can be effectively used in the patient. That includes selection of patients for biopsy and for various drug regimens. This is true especially in patients with anuric acute tubular necrosis (ATN) and in patients with developing chronic rejection. Improving indices of renal function (effective rena

Compressed sensing magnetization-prepared 2 rapid gradient-echo for accelerated hip cartilage T1 mapping and deep learning-based 3D segmentation of hip cartilage and labrum.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive assessment of hip cartilage morphology and composition is essential for surgical decision-making in femoroacetabular impingement and hip dysplasia. Magnetization-prepared 2 rapid gradient-echo (MP2RAGE) enables T1 mapping and segmentation but requires long acquisition times, limiting clinical adoption. To validate a compressed sensing (CS) MP2RAGE protocol against the standard sequence for hip cartilage T1 mapping and automated 3D segmentation of hip cartilage and labrum. METHODS: This retrospective study included 18 patients who underwent direct MR arthrography with

Deep learning-based diffusion-weighted imaging vs. conventionally obtained diffusion-weighted imaging in prostate cancer extracapsular extension detection: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Extracapsular extension (ECE) of prostate cancer (PCa) is a crucial determinant for preoperative staging, significantly influencing urologists’ surgical planning. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) aids staging by depicting ECE, its diagnostic accuracy is frequently constrained by poor image quality. Deep learning-based diffusion-weighted imaging (DL-DWI) holds potential for enhancing diagnostic accuracy through improved image quality. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study enrolled 252 consecutive patients with clinically suspected PCa from five centers between June 201
