Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) is the phenomenon whereby material is retained normally over short intervals (e.g. minutes) but forgotten abnormally rapidly over longer periods (days or weeks). ALF might be an early marker of cognitive decline, but little is known about its relationships with preclinical Alzheimer's disease pathology and how memory selectivity might influence which material is forgotten. We assessed ALF in 'Insight 46', a sub-study of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (a population-based cohort born during the same week in 1946) (n = 429; 47% female; ass

Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a secreted neuronal protein that forms a trans-synaptic complex that includes the presynaptic disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 23 (ADAM23), which interacts with voltage-gated potassium channels Kv1.1, and the postsynaptic ADAM22, which interacts with AMPA receptors. Human autoantibodies against LGI1 associate with a form of autoimmune limbic encephalitis characterized by severe but treatable memory impairment and frequent faciobrachial dystonic seizures. Although there is evidence that this disease is immune-mediated, the u

The major route of COVID-19 vaccination currently is via intramuscular injection. Data from clinical trials and real-world studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing severe illness and death caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, its protective efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission in situ remains relatively low. Given that SARS-CoV-2, especially the Omicron variant and its sub-variants, primarily infects and replicates in the human upper respiratory tract, mucosal immune responses are crucial for preventing viral infection. Therefore, we constructed a chimpan

After severe depletion of CD4 T cells in AIDS patients, they are not only prone to a first-time Nocardia infection, but also, even if cured, unable to form protective immune memory, leaving them susceptible to reinfection with the same pathogen. More seriously, in the absence of immune surveillance, irregular drug use can accelerate the selection of drug-resistant strains. A 32-year-old man with AIDS and persistent CD4+ count below 100 cells/μL for over three years (nadir 2 cells/μL) developed right lower lobe pneumonia caused by Nocardia farcinica four years before the current admission, whic

BACKGROUND: Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and glioblastoma (GBM) are two highly aggressive and generally incurable gliomas with little therapeutic advancements made in the past several decades. Despite immense initial success of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells for the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, significant headway into the application of CAR-T cells against solid tumors, including gliomas, is still forthcoming. The integrin complex alphav beta3 (αvβ3) is present on multiple and diverse solid tumor types and tumor vasculature with limited expression throughout most no

Tissue resident memory T (TRM) cells reside in peripheral, non-lymphoid tissues such as the skin, where they act as alarm-sensor cells or cytotoxic cells. Physiologically, skin TRM cells persist for a long term and can be reactivated upon reinfection with the same antigen, thus serving as peripheral sentinels in the immune surveillance network. CD8+CD69+CD103+ TRM cells are the well-characterized subtype that develops in the epidermis. The local mediators such as interleukin (IL)-15 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β are required for the formation of long-lived TRM cell population in skin.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: This study aimed to investigate how the chronicity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) shapes neurobiological functioning by integrating biochemical stress-related biomarkers (serotonin, cortisol, noradrenaline, IL-12, IGF-1, CASP-9, nNOS, IL-10) with morphometric and microstructural brain parameters assessed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A further objective was to determine whether early PTSD (≤5 years) and long-term PTSD (>5 years) exhibit distinct profiles of neuroinflammatory, neurodegenerative, and neuroplastic alterations, with particular focus on brain reg

IMPORTANCE: Nursing homes deliver rehabilitative and long-term care for people with serious medical illnesses, functional impairment, and/or cognitive impairment. The population of nursing home residents with serious mental illness (ie, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders) has grown substantially. Other than prisons and jails, nursing homes are the largest institutional care setting for adults (aged ≥18 years) with serious mental illness. Nursing home residents with serious mental illness become long-term residents despite less functional impairment, which may be a funct

Session-based Recommendation (SBR) systems aim to predict the next item which a user is likely to interact with, based on behavior sequence within the current session. Recent approaches leveraging the Transformer attention mechanism (e.g.,GC-SAN) have demonstrated superior performance over traditional methods; however, they suffer from heavily computation workload and space complexity due to the quadratic cost of self-attention. To address these limitations, a novel model termed GSLA4Rec (gated‑slot linear attention graph neural networks for session‑based recommendation) is proposed, which int

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indoleamine secreted by the pineal gland during the dark phase of the photoperiod. Its main function is the synchronization of different body rhythms with the dark-light cycle. Research on melatonin has significantly advanced since its discovery and we now know that it has considerable significance in various physiological processes, including immunity, aging, and reproduction. Moreover, in recent years evidence of the pharmacological possibilities of melatonin has increased. Indoleamine, on the other hand, has antidepressant-like effects in roden

The inability to properly extinguish fear memories constitutes the foundation of several anxiety disorders, including panic disorder. Recent findings show that boosting prefrontal cortex synaptic plasticity potentiates fear extinction, suggesting that therapies that augment synaptic plasticity could prove useful in rescue of fear extinction impairments in this group of disorders. Previously, we reported that mice with selective deregulation of neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor, type 3 expression (TgNTRK3) exhibit increased fear memories accompanied by impaired extinction, congruent with an

Several epidemiological studies show an increase in cannabis use among adolescents, especially in Morocco for being one of the major producers in the world. The neurobiological consequences of chronic cannabis use are still poorly understood. In addition, brain plasticity linked to ontogeny portrays adolescence as a period of vulnerability to the deleterious effects of drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavioral neurogenic effects of chronic exposure to the cannabinoid agonist WIN55,212-2 during adolescence, by evaluating the emotional and cognitive performances, and the con

AIM: The purpose of this review was to examine the possible pathophysiological links between epilepsy, cognition, sleep macro- and microstructure, and sleep disorders to highlight the contributions and interactions of sleep and epilepsy on cognitive functioning in children with epilepsy.
METHOD: PubMed was used as the medical database source. No language restriction was placed on the literature searches, and citations of relevant studies in the paediatric age range (0-18 y) were checked. Studies including a mixed population but with a high percentage of children were also considered.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is connected with the experience of traumatic events and is significantly related to war and forced displacement. Refugee populations are characterized by a high degree of vulnerability for the development of PTSD, as they are confronted with stressors associated with all three distinct phases of migratory journey. The present article is an attempt to systematic review the therapeutic interventions based on the Cognitive Behavioral Approach and applied to refugees diagnosed with PTSD. For this reason, a review of the international literature was carried ou

BACKGROUND: Vaccines induce antigen-specific memory in adaptive immune cells that enables long-lived protection against the target pathogen. In addition to this, several vaccines have beneficial effects greater than protection against their target pathogen. These non-specific effects are proposed to be the result of vaccine-induced immunomodulation. In the case of bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, this involves induction of innate immune memory, termed 'trained immunity', in monocytes and natural killer cells.
OBJECTIVES: This review discusses current evidence for vaccine-induced immunom

BACKGROUND: Currently, pancreas transplantation has been a promising strategy to restore long-term normoglycemia as well as to improve life quality for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DM). However, the discrepancy between the number of organs needed and the number donated for transplantation is always enormous. Under a setting of scarce organ donations, we examined our limited experience of pancreas transplantation.
METHODS: A retrospective review of pancreas transplantations was performed with the use of data from the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center and the Minist

Ionizing radiations induce oxidative stress on target tissues, mainly through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, there are few data available on the behavioral effects of moderate doses of ionizing radiation. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the performance of adult rats irradiated at birth in different hippocampal-dependent behavioral tasks and to establish a relationship with the oxidative status and histological changes in rat hippocampus (Hip). Male Wistar rats were irradiated with 5 Gy of X rays between 24 and 48 h after birth. Thirty days later, rats wer

In the field of perception, learning is formed by a distributed functional architecture of very specialized cortical areas. For example, capacities of learning in patients with visual deficits - hemianopia or visual agnosia - from cerebral lesions are limited by perceptual abilities. Moreover a visual deficit in link with abnormal perception may be associated with an alteration of representations in long term (semantic) memory. Furthermore, perception and memory traces rely on parallel processing. This has been recently demonstrated for human audition. Activation studies in normal subjects and
