Birth/birth-death processes and their computable transition probabilities with biological applications.

Birth-death processes track the size of a univariate population, but many biological systems involve interaction between populations, necessitating models for two or more populations simultaneously. A lack of efficient methods for evaluating finite-time transition probabilities of bivariate processes, however, has restricted statistical inference in these models. Researchers rely on computationally expensive methods such as matrix exponentiation or Monte Carlo approximation, restricting likelihood-based inference to small systems, or indirect methods such as approximate Bayesian computation. Biomechanical comparison of orthogonal versus parallel double plating systems in intraarticular distal humerus fractures.

OBJECTIVES: In intraarticular distal humerus fractures, internal fixation with double plates is the gold standard treatment. However the optimal plate configuration is not clear in the literature. The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical stability of the parallel and the orthogonal anatomical locking plating systems in intraarticular distal humerus fractures in artificial humerus models. METHODS: Intraarticular distal humerus fracture (AO13-C2) with 5 mm metaphyseal defect was created in sixteen artificial humeral models. Models were fixed with either orthogonal or parallel plat

Torsional stiffness and strength of the proximal tibia are better predicted by finite element models than DXA or QCT.

Individuals with spinal cord injury experience a rapid loss of bone mineral below the neurological lesion. The clinical consequence of this bone loss is a high rate of fracture around regions of the knee. The ability to predict the mechanical competence of bones at this location may serve as an important clinical tool to assess fracture risk in the spinal cord injury population. The purpose of this study was to develop, and statistically compare, non-invasive methods to predict torsional stiffness (K) and strength (Tult) of the proximal tibia. Twenty-two human tibiae were assigned to either a

Factor analyses of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale: a Bayesian structural equation modeling approach.

PURPOSE: The latent structure of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) has caused inconsistent results in the literature. The HADS is frequently analyzed via maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis (ML-CFA). However, the overly restrictive assumption of exact zero cross-loadings and residual correlations in ML-CFA can lead to poor model fits and distorted factor structures. This study applied Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM) to evaluate the latent structure of the HADS. METHODS: Three a priori models, the two-factor, three-factor, and bifactor models, were inves

Segregation analysis of hypospadias: a reanalysis of published pedigree data.

Little is known about the cause of hypospadias, one of the most common urogenital anomalies in males. Familial clustering of hypospadias is well recognized, with heritability estimated to be about 70% under a simple multifactorial threshold model. Neither alternative genetic mechanisms nor shared environmental factors within families have been explored fully. To learn more about possible genetic mechanisms, we used 2 methods of segregation analysis to analyze a set of published family data. These analyses are based on the families of 103 probands with hypospadias, who were ascertained through

Systematic review and meta-analysis of machine learning models predicting massive hemorrhage protocol in trauma.

Timely activation of massive hemorrhage protocols (MHP) is critical to prevent exsanguination and improve survival in trauma patients. Current clinical tools for predicting MHP need have limited sensitivity and moderate specificity. Machine learning (ML) models may enhance early recognition of life-threatening hemorrhage. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that developed or validated ML models to predict MHP need in patients with traumatic injuries (PROSPERO CRD42024574891). Databases searched included MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of

Large language models with image processing in automated Cobb angle.

BACKGROUND: The degree of scoliosis is assessed through the Cobb angle, which quantifies severity and is measured by clinicians on radiographs. With the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical workflows, there is uncertainty as to whether large language models (LLMs) with image processing capabilities can streamline and improve spinal deformity classification. This study aims to assess the diagnostic capabilities of 4 leading LLMs: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok in calculating Cobb angles from radiographs. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 122 scoliosis pati

Group optimization methods for dose planning in tES.

Objective.Optimizing transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) parameters-including stimulator settings and electrode placements, using magnetic resonance imaging-derived head models is essential for achieving precise electric field (E-field) distributions, enhancing therapeutic efficacy, and reducing inter-individual variability. However, the dependence on individually personalized MRI-based models limits their scalability in some clinical and research contexts. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel group-level optimization framework employing multiple representative head models.App

BACKGROUND: Medical outcomes of interest to clinicians may have multiple categories. Researchers face several options for risk prediction of such outcomes, including dichotomized logistic regression and multinomial logit regression modeling. We aimed to compare these methods and provide guidance needed for practice. METHODS: We described dichotomized logistic regression, multinomial continuation-ratio logit regression, which is an alternative to standard multinomial logit regression for ordinal outcomes, and logistic competing risks regression. We then applied these methods to develop predict
