Estimating the impact of imported malaria on local transmission in a near elimination setting: a case study from Bhutan.

BACKGROUND: Bhutan has achieved a substantial reduction in both malaria morbidity and mortality over the last two decades and is aiming for malaria elimination certification in 2025. However, a significant percentage of malaria cases in Bhutan are imported (acquired in another country). The aim of the study was to understand how importation drives local malaria transmission in Bhutan. METHODS: Information on geo-located individual-level laboratory-confirmed malaria cases between 2016 and 2020 was obtained from the Bhutan Vector-borne Disease Control Program. Records included the date of diagn

Preventing the re-establishment of malaria during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka: implications for health security.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic-with its first reported case in Sri Lanka in March 2020-had the potential to impact the risk of re-establishing malaria, a disease which was eliminated from Sri Lanka in 2012. Post-elimination, the country remains highly vulnerable to a return of malaria on account of high vector mosquito densities and the inflow of imported malaria cases. METHODS: Parallels between COVID-19 and malaria after its elimination as health security threats were drawn, and the many ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the prevention of re-establishment of malaria programmes

Impact of storm drains on the maintenance of dengue endemicity in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil: a geospatial and epidemiologic approach.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is a public health challenge worldwide. Brazil registered about 70% of cases in Latin America in 2023; in 2024, the country is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the number of infected individuals. By May 2024, more than 4 million people were infected. Our goal was to: (1) determine the epidemiology of dengue cases and their spatiotemporal distribution and (2) carry out a survey of the storm drains and through a geospatial analysis to determine their possible correlation with cases of dengue in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Cases and information

Entomological Characteristics of Malaria Transmission across Benin: An Essential Element for Improved Deployment of Vector Control Interventions.

Entomological surveillance in Benin has historically been limited to zones where indoor residual spraying was performed or where long-standing sentinel surveillance sites existed. However, there are significant country-wide gaps in entomological knowledge. The National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) assessed population dynamics of Anopheles vectors and malaria transmission in each of Benin’s 12 departments to create an entomological risk profile. Two communes per department (24/77 communes) were chosen to reflect diverse geographies, ecologies and malaria prevalence. Two villages per commune w

Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles: Effective Antilarvicidal and Antibacterial Agents.

People are vulnerable to mosquito-borne infections in tropical and subtropical climate countries. Due to resistive issues, vector control is an immediate concern in today's environment. The current study describes the synthesis of magnesium oxide by four different approaches including green, microwave, sol-gel, and hydrothermal methods. The synthesized magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) techniques.

Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus Bacteria as Potential Candidates for the Control of Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae), the Principal Vector of West Nile Virus and Lymphatic Filariasis.

Vector-borne diseases pose a severe threat to human and animal health. Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is a widespread mosquito species and serves as a vector for the transmission of infectious diseases such as West Nile disease and Lymphatic Filariasis. Synthetic insecticides have been the prime control method for many years to suppress Cx. pipiens populations. However, recently, the use of insecticides has begun to be questioned due to the detrimental impact on human health and the natural environment. Therefore, many authorities urge the development of eco-friendly control methods tha

Neuropathology of yellow fever autopsy cases.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by yellow fever virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus. Despite an effective vaccine, major outbreaks continue to occur around the world. Even though it is not a proven neurotropic virus, neurological symptoms in more severe clinical forms are frequent. The understanding of this apparent paradox is still rarely addressed in literature. METHODS: The brains of thirty-eight patients with yellow fever confirmed by RT-PCR, who underwent autopsy, were analyzed morphologically to identify and characterize neuropathological changes. The data we

Malaria prevalence, knowledge and associated factors among household heads in Maygaba town, Ethiopia.

Malaria remains a leading public health issue in Ethiopia, despite wide use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs). Consistent use of ITNs reduces malaria transmission by 90%. However, coverage and proper use of ITNs are the major challenge for most rural settings of Ethiopia. We assessed the prevalence of malaria, ITNs use and associated factors among household heads in Maygaba town, northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 403 households using a structured questionnaire. Blood samples were collected from household heads and examined for malaria parasites by micr

Eastern equine encephalitis virus rapidly infects and disseminates in the brain and spinal cord of cynomolgus macaques following aerosol challenge.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is mosquito-borne virus that produces fatal encephalitis in humans. We recently conducted a first of its kind study to investigate EEEV clinical disease course following aerosol challenge in a cynomolgus macaque model utilizing the state-of-the-art telemetry to measure critical physiological parameters. Here, we report the results of a comprehensive pathology study of NHP tissues collected at euthanasia to gain insights into EEEV pathogenesis. Viral RNA and proteins as well as microscopic lesions were absent in the visceral organs. In contrast, viral RN

High genetic diversity in the Dirofilaria repens species complex revealed by mitochondrial genomes of feline microfilaria samples from Narathiwat, Thailand.

Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic, mosquito-borne filaria infecting carnivores, particularly dogs. It is expanding its range in Europe but epidemiological information is sparse for other Eurasian regions. In Hong Kong and India, the closely related species Candidatus Dirofilaria hongkongensis was proposed. Previous analysis of 2.5 kb partial mitochondrial genome sequences containing the particularly variable non-coding control region revealed low diversity in European D. repens while Asian nematodes showed high diversity. Sequences derived from feline blood samples from Narathiwat (Thailand) le

Dengue vaccines: challenges, development, current status and prospects.

Infection with dengue virus (DENV) is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. The clinical spectrum of dengue, caused by any of the four serotypes of DENV, ranges from mild self-limiting dengue fever to severe dengue, in the form dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Increased rates of hospitalization due to severe dengue, during outbreaks, result in massive economic losses and strained health services. In the absence of specific antiviral therapy, control of transmission of DENV by vector management is the sole method available for decre

The distribution and bionomics of anopheles malaria vector mosquitoes in Indonesia.

Malaria remains one of the greatest human health burdens in Indonesia. Although Indonesia has a long and renowned history in the early research and discoveries of malaria and subsequently in the successful use of environmental control methods to combat the vector, much remains unknown about many of these mosquito species. There are also significant gaps in the existing knowledge on the transmission epidemiology of malaria, most notably in the highly malarious eastern half of the archipelago. These compound the difficulty of developing targeted and effective control measures. The sheer complexi

DengueTools: innovative tools and strategies for the surveillance and control of dengue.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease estimated to cause about 230 million infections worldwide every year, of which 25,000 are fatal. Global incidence has risen rapidly in recent decades with some 3.6 billion people, over half of the world's population, now at risk, mainly in urban centres of the tropics and subtropics. Demographic and societal changes, in particular urbanization, globalization, and increased international travel, are major contributors to the rise in incidence and geographic expansion of dengue infections. Major research gaps continue to hamper the control of dengue

Insecticidal and larvicidal activities of medicinal plant extracts against mosquitoes.

In recent years, use of environment friendly and biodegradable natural insecticides of plant origin have received renewed attention as agents for vector control because they are rich in bioactive chemicals, active against a limited number of species including specific target insects, and biodegradable. The present study was carried out to evaluate the adulticidal, repellent, and larvicidal activity of crude hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of eight plants, viz. Aristolochia indica L., Cassia angustifolia Vahl, Diospyros melanoxylon Roxb., Dolichos biflorus L., Gymnema sylvestre (Re

Modeling the impact of war, interventions, and funding on malaria transmission dynamics in Sudan.

Malaria poses a significant public health risk worldwide, and the infection results from the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Many malaria-endemic regions face instability, often driven by wars, heightening the risk of infectious disease transmission. Malaria funding and targeted prevention are essential for reducing and eventually eradicating transmission. This article focuses on developing a compartmental mathematical model to study malaria infection dynamics, incorporating the effects of malaria prevention, funding, and war on health systems. We evaluate the model's basic repr

Pathogenicity of Rift Valley fever virus: Organ-specific clinical outcomes and hidden drivers of virulence - a narrative review.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne phlebovirus posing major threats to human and animal health. Despite decades of research, the determinants governing diverse clinical manifestations remain incompletely understood. This narrative review examines four central facets: i) exposure route impacts on disease outcome; ii) field strain diversity and organ-specific virulence; iii) genome reassortment driving viral evolution; and iv) organ-specific pathology including the overlooked placental/retinal infections. Differences among infection routes, viral strains, and host species complic

RNA interference is essential to modulating the pathogenesis of mosquito-borne viruses in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

While it has long been known that the transmission of mosquito-borne viruses depends on the establishment of persistent and nonlethal infections in the invertebrate host, specific roles for the insects' antiviral immune pathways in modulating the pathogenesis of viral infections is the subject of speculation and debate. Here, we show that a loss-of-function mutation in the Aedes aegypti Dicer-2 (Dcr-2) gene renders the insect acutely susceptible to a disease phenotype upon infection with pathogens in multiple virus families associated with important human diseases. Additional interrogation of
