Identification of letters distorted by physiologically-inspired spatial scrambling.

In the geniculostriate pathway of the human visual system, neuronal projections carry signals from a particular retinal locus in parallel from one anatomical area to the next. Imprecision in the fidelity of these projections would place constraints on the ability of the system to perform tasks requiring positional information. We investigated the impact that "spatial scrambling" between stages would have on visual performance. We consider two stages in a simple canonical model of the early visual cortex where scrambling might occur: either the input to the first orientation-tuned mechanisms (a

BrainPrompt+: Multi-Level Brain Prompt Learning for Knowledge-Guided Neurological Disorder Identification.

Accurate identification of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is challenging due to subtle early-stage symptoms and heterogeneous brain dynamics. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) enables the construction of functional brain networks, where Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown promise for disease classification. However, existing GNN-based methods face three key limitations: correlation-based graph construction introduces noise and negative edges; domain knowledge about brain regions is ignored; and demo

CSD-GCN: Cross-Modal Self-Distillation Graph Convolutional Network for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that demands more comprehensive and precise modeling to unravel its complex pathological mechanisms and multidimensional brain network abnormalities. However, current brain network analysis approaches often suffer from limitations such as single-modal data processing and shallow fusion strategies, which hinder their ability to capture the multi-scale connectivity patterns associated with AD effectively. To alleviate these limitations, a novel multi-modal fusion framework is proposed in this paper, namely a cross-modal self-dist

Enhancing automatic landmark localization in X-ray images using combined segmentation and regression models: application to lower limb alignment assessment.

Manual landmark detection in lower limb medical imaging is time-consuming and error-prone. Recently, authors have proposed automatic landmark detection methods based on image segmentation, coordinate regression, or a combination of both to aid clinicians. While the latter approach shows promising results, detailed optimization of its design choices, including the integration strategy and hyperparameter tuning, remains unexplored. This study investigates the optimal approach to combining image segmentation and coordinate regression, focusing on selecting suitable network architectures and optim

Impact of image processing techniques on deep learning-based classification accuracy of cervical vertebral maturation.

OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to investigate how different image processing techniques influence the performance of a deep learning model in classifying cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stages. METHODS: A dataset of 799 cephalometric radiographs, originally obtained for orthodontic diagnosis, was analyzed. For each image, a rectangular section including the second to fourth cervical vertebrae (C2-C4) was extracted and used as the standard image. A version with low signal intensity was created and termed the "low-density image." Additionally, images were labeled by filling the internal ar

VMDiff: A novel hybrid CNN-Mamba generative framework for retinal phenotype image enhancement.

Retinal phenotype is crucial for the diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases. Although deep learning models exhibit strong generative capability and detailed reconstruction, they struggle to simultaneously capture fine local details and long-range global dependencies, resulting in poor phenotypic enhancement. To overcome these limitations, we propose VMDiff, a hybrid generative framework based on diffusion models that synergistically integrates CNN and Mamba architectures to enhance retinal images while preserving both local and global features. Specifically, we introduce a high-frequency extraction

PDSNet: Patient-Disease Dual Spatial Similarity Neural Networks for Predicting Heart Failure Risk Using Short Electronic Health Records.

Heart failure (HF) is a complex and heterogeneous syndrome caused by diverse factors, such as atrial fibrillation, diabetes, and pulmonary hypertension. The intricate pathophysiology of HF, coupled with variability in patient demographics and presentations, poses significant challenges to the effectiveness of existing deep learning models in HF risk prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel deep neural network, PDSNet, which leverages a new dual patient-disease spatial similarity strategy to improve HF risk prediction using short electronic health records. First, we develop ontology graphs

Master of Metals2: a graph neural network based architecture for the prediction of zinc binding sites in protein structures.

Zinc ions play essential structural and catalytic roles in a wide range of proteins. Accurate prediction of their binding sites is crucial for structural and functional annotation. We present MoM2, a web-accessible tool for predicting zinc-binding sites in protein 3D structures. MoM2 employs a graph neural network trained exclusively on spatial features specifically, Cα and Cβ coordinates eliminating the need for templates or sequence-based heuristics. The tool efficiently processes entire proteomes within hours and demonstrates strong predictive performance. In a benchmark of 412 experimental

Explainable AI for chest radiographs: sex-stratified fairness auditing in CNN-based pneumonia detection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems for chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation can achieve high standalone diagnostic accuracy, yet limited transparency raises concerns about subgroup disparities. We audited sex-stratified performance and attention patterns in CNN-based pneumonia detection using the RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge dataset (26,684 frontal adult CXRs). ImageNet-pretrained InceptionV3 models were trained across five prespecified random seeds and combined as a seed-ensemble. Analyses used a prespecified, fixed, patient-level sex- and label-balanced test set (n = 1,000; 250 pneumonia

Fundus image quality assessment in retinopathy of prematurity via multi-label graph evidential network.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. In clinical practice, fundus imaging serves as a primary diagnostic tool for ROP, making the accurate quality assessment of these images critically important. However, existing automated methods for evaluating ROP fundus images face significant challenges. First, there is a high degree of visual similarity between lesions and factors that influence quality. Second, there is a paucity of trustworthy outputs and interpretable or clinical-friendly designs, which limit their reliability and effectiveness. In this

An efficient dual path deep learning framework for COVID-19 classification using lung CT scans with explainable AI.

While the global burden of COVID-19 has eased due to widespread vaccination and public health efforts, the virus has not been eradicated. New variants continue to emerge, and localized outbreaks remain a concern, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources. This highlights the ongoing need for rapid, accurate, and scalable diagnostic tools. In this study, a comprehensive deep learning framework for detecting COVID-19 from lung CT scans is presented, aimed at improving diagnostic reliability and computational efficiency. An extensive and diverse CT dataset was curated by combining

Entropy-regularized dual-stream attention fusion for multi-disease lung classification.

Accurate and reliable classification of lung diseases from medical imaging remains challenging due to overlapping radiological patterns, disease heterogeneity, and variations in image quality. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an Adaptive Dual-Stream Attention Fusion (ADSAF) framework for automated lung disease classification. The proposed model integrates convolutional neural networks and vision transformers to jointly capture fine-grained local textures and long-range global contextual dependencies. An adaptive attention fusion mechanism dynamically learns image-specific weigh

Uncertainty-Aware adaptive neuro-fuzzy transformer framework for robust multi-center lung disease classification.

The accurate multi-class classification of lung disease from chest radiographs remains challenging because of the diagnostic uncertainty, domain shift, class imbalance and over-reliance on the confidence-based thresholds. The existing CNN–fuzzy based hybrid frameworks frequently employ the static membership functions and manually designed rule bases, which limits the adaptability and cross-dataset generalization. In this paper, we propose the Uncertainty-Aware Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Transformer (UANFT) framework which jointly learns the feature representations, uncertainty estimation and fuzzy i

Compact Occlusion-Robust Facial Expression Recognition via Clean-Anchored Hard Occlusion Fine-Tuning.

Facial occlusion removes expression-relevant evidence and remains a major source of error in camera-based affective sensing. Existing approaches to occlusion-robust facial expression recognition often rely on specialized attention, reconstruction, semantic, or geometric pipelines, whereas aggressive training using synthetic occlusions may impair discrimination on clean images or overfit to synthetic corruption patterns. We address this tension between cleanness and robustness through clean-anchored hard occlusion fine-tuning (CA-HOFT). HardMix samples structured and random occlusion modes acco

Deep learning-based automatic segmentation and classification for cervical cancer detection using an improved U-Net and ensemble methods.

Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related illness and death among women worldwide. The Pap test is a widely used screening technique to detect abnormal cells that can become cancerous. In this research, we proposed a method for automatic segmentation and classification of cervical cancer cell images. The method uses an improved U-Net architecture to segment the image and identify the region of interest (ROI). Following segmentation, we classify the cervical cell type using ResNet50V2 and an ensemble of different pretrained models to enhance performance. We developed several
