Netrin-1 Confines Rhombic Lip-Derived Neurons to the CNS.

During brainstem development, newborn neurons originating from the rhombic lip embark on exceptionally long migrations to generate nuclei important for audition, movement, and respiration. Along the way, this highly motile population passes several cranial nerves yet remains confined to the CNS. We found that Ntn1 accumulates beneath the pial surface separating the CNS from the PNS, with gaps at nerve entry sites. In mice null for Ntn1 or its receptor DCC, hindbrain neurons enter cranial nerves and migrate into the periphery. CNS neurons also escape when Ntn1 is selectively lost from the sub-p

Modification of Cerebellar Afferent Pathway in the Subacute Phase of Stroke.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify the relationship between corticopontocerebellar tract (CPCT) and corticospinal tract (CST) integrity as well as motor function after stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 33 patients with stroke (18 left, 15 right hemispheric lesions) who underwent diffusion tensor imaging within 2 months of stroke onset and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were retrospectively enrolled. Tract volume and the asymmetry index based on tract volume (AITV) of the CST and CPCT were used to identify structural changes in individual tracts and the correlation betwe

Pudendal but not tibial nerve stimulation inhibits bladder contractions induced by stimulation of pontine micturition center in cats.

This study examined the possibility that pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS) or tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) inhibits the excitatory pathway from the pontine micturition center (PMC) to the urinary bladder. In decerebrate cats under α-chloralose anesthesia, electrical stimulation of the PMC (40 Hz frequency, 0.2-ms pulse width, 10-25 s duration) using a microelectrode induced bladder contractions >20 cmH2O amplitude when the bladder was filled to 60-70% capacity. PNS or TNS (5 Hz, 0.2 ms) at two and four times the threshold (2T and 4T) to induce anal or toe twitch was applied to inhibit the PMC

Head impulse gain and saccade analysis in pontine-cerebellar stroke and vestibular neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify and compare angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) gain and compensatory saccade properties elicited by the head impulse test (HIT) in pontine-cerebellar stroke (PCS) and vestibular neuritis (VN). METHODS: Horizontal HIT was recorded ≤7 days from vertigo onset with dual-search coils in 33 PCS involving the anterior inferior, posterior inferior, and superior cerebellar arteries (13 AICA, 17 PICA, 3 SCA) confirmed by MRI and 20 VN. We determined the aVOR gain and asymmetry, and compensatory overt saccade properties including amplitude asymmetry and cumulative am

Microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: technical notes on pontomedullary sulcus decompression.

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial spasm usually results from compression of facial nerve by offending vessels. During microvascular decompression, offending vessels at pontomedullary sulcus are obscured by the lower cranial nerve roots, making exposure and surgery difficult. This study discusses the techniques for decompression of offending vessels in this area. METHODS: Of 213 patients who underwent microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm, 34 patients had compression of the facial nerve at the pontomedullary sulcus by offending vessels. Details of the intraoperative exposure and the arrangemen

Rostral ventromedial medulla modulates nociception and tonic immobility behavior through connections with the A7 catecholaminergic region.

Cholinergic stimulation of the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) produces antinociception and reduces the duration of tonic immobility (TI) … into the A7 prior to saline injection into the RVM had no effect on either the nociceptive or TI responses. The microinjection of the neurotracer BDA into the RVM positively stained fibers and synaptic boutons in the A7, indicating that there are direct projections from the RVM to the A7. Taken together, our results indicate that the antinociception an …

Glutamatergic Kölliker-Fuse nucleus neurons innervate hypoglossal motoneurons whose axons form the medial (protruder) branch of the hypoglossal nerve in the rat.

This study was performed to understand the anatomical substrates for Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFN) modulation of respiratory-related tongue movement. After application of cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) to the medial branch of the hypoglossal nerve (HGn) and injection of biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the KFN ipsilaterally, an overlapping distribution of BDA-labeled axon terminals and CTb-labeled neurons was found in the ventral compartment of the hypoglossal nucleus (HGN) ipsilateral to the application and injection sites. At the electron microscopic level, the BDA-labeled terminals made a

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in patients with a diminished prepontine interval.

OBJECT: Fenestration of the floor of the third ventricle is vital to the success of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in treating patients with noncommunicating hydrocephalus. A generous prepontine interval (PPI) is generally accepted as one anatomical feature that may affect the safety and functionality of ETV. Whether a diminished PPI influences the safety or success of ETV, however, has not been adequately assessed. METHODS: A review was conducted on the last 100 ETV procedures performed by the first author (M.M.S.). From archived preoperative MR imaging studies, the PPI was measured

Lateral parabrachial nucleus and central amygdala in the control of sodium intake.

The lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) are important areas for the control of sodium appetite. In the present study we investigated the effects of bilateral lesions of the CeA on the facilitation of water and 0.3 M NaCl intake produced by the blockade of serotonergic mechanisms or activation of alpha(2)-adrenoceptors with bilateral injections of methysergide or moxonidine, respectively, into the LPBN. Male Holtzman rats (n=5-8) with bilateral sham or electrolytic lesions of the CeA (2 mA; 10 s) and stainless steel cannulas implanted bilaterally in

Synaptic localization of GluR4-containing AMPARs and Arc during acquisition, extinction, and reacquisition of in vitro classical conditioning.

Data suggest that modulation of synaptic strength by incorporation of GluR4-containing AMPARs occurs during conditioned response (CR) acquisition in an in vitro model of classical conditioning. Here we extend these findings by showing that synaptically localized GluR4 subunits parallels the expression of CRs during conditioning training in which there is differential expression of CRs, such as during acquisition, extinction, and reacquisition. Moreover, colocalization and coimmunoprecipitation data suggest that Arc associates with GluR4-containing AMPARs during these different training procedu…

Frontal-lobe syndrome and psychosis after damage to the brainstem dopaminergic nuclei.

A patient developed frontal-lobe syndrome and psychotic symptoms after infarction in the pontomesencephalic junction. Stereotaxic lesion localization on magnetic resonance imaging and statistical analyses of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) disclosed an involvement of the rostral brainstem dopaminergic nuclei and hypoperfusion in the frontal-subcortical circuit components. We suggest that the patient's cognitive and behavioral disturbances were associated with disruption of ascending dopaminergic projections to the frontal-subcortical circuits.

[Acute bilateral deafness and facial diplegia as a presentation of occlusion of the basilar artery].

INTRODUCTION: Sudden bilateral deafness and facial weakness are unusual presentations of brain stem stroke. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a patient who presented successively sudden bilateral deafness and facial diplegia in correlation with a brain stem stroke but without any ischemic pontine lesion. DISCUSSION: Unlike our case, all of the earlier publications, have reported the presence of ischemic pontine lesions in patients with bilateral deafness and facial diplegia. Selective vulnerability of inner ear to ischemia has been hypothesized but cannot explain the facial diplegia. CONCL

Surgical treatment of a basilar perforator aneurysm not accessible to endovascular treatment.

Aneurysms originating from perforatoring branches of the midbasilar artery are extremely rare. Rupture of such an aneurysm resulted in a subarachnoid hemorrhage with a prepontine clot in a 44 year old male who presented with an acute confusional state. After coil embolization had failed, the partially thrombosed aneurysm was wrapped and coagulated via a combined supra-/infratentorial subtemporal presigmoid approach in prone position. The postoperative course was complicated by a tension pneumatocephalus and liquorrhea. Additional aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery and right middle

[Pontine stroke secondary to a foramen magnum meningioma].

INTRODUCTION: Meningioma is one of the most frequent tumours affecting the central nervous system, with an estimated incidence of between 15 and 20% of all brain tumours. They are generally benign and slow growing. Their appearing as a cerebral infarction is very rare. CASE REPORT: A right-handed 75-year-old female patient with a personal history of arterial hypertension, who visited the Emergency Department because of the sudden onset of severe dysarthria, accompanied by loss of strength in the left limbs, supranuclear facial palsy on the left side and Horner syndrome on the right. Immunohistochemical and biochemical studies demonstrate a distinct profile of alpha-synuclein permutations in multiple system atrophy.

Although alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn) has been implicated as a major component of the abnormal filaments that form glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) in multiple system atrophy (MSA), it is uncertain if GCIs are homogenous and contain full-length alpha-syn. Since this has implications for hypotheses about the pathogenesis of GCIs, we used a novel panel of antibodies to defined regions throughout alpha-syn in immunohistochemical epitope mapping studies of GCIs in MSA brains. Although the immunostaining profile of GCIs with these antibodies was similar for all MSA brains, there were significant

Radiation-induced rhombencephalopathy.

We report the case of a patient who underwent radiotherapy of the neck because of an epidermoid carcinoma in Rosenmuller's fossa. Eleven months later, T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a bulbo-pontine lesion, and the clinical course and sequential MRI results led to a diagnosis of radionecrosis-induced rhombencephalopathy. At a distance of more than three years, the lesion is no longer visible on MRI images but the severe neurological deficits remain. The clinical picture has not been improved by treatment with prednisone, hyperbaric oxygen, symptomatic therapies or a
