Monitoring distal radius fractures during rehabilitation using infrared thermography.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are among the most common injuries with a relevant rehabilitation process. Following a tissue injury, an inflammatory response occurs, leading to an increase in local temperature. This temperature can be recorded using infrared thermography. This study aimed to determine the degree of skin temperature asymmetry in patients with distal radius fractures during the rehabilitation process, at the beginning and at discharge, as well as to examine the correlation between thermal asymmetry and clinical indicators of injury. METHODS: Infrared images of the forear

Neural Population Dynamics in Primate Multisensory Cortical Areas during Heading Discrimination.

Cortical areas involved in self-motion perception process cues from multiple sensory modalities, primarily visual and vestibular, alongside choice-related activity. Neurons in these regions often respond to combinations of these factors-demonstrating a high degree of mixed selectivity. Moreover, self-motion is inherently dynamic, with each cue-visual and vestibular-comprising a mix of distinct motion signals, such as velocity and acceleration, that evolve over time. Here, we developed a time-varying targeted dimensionality reduction method to expose these dynamic motion and choice-related sign

Global motion coherent deficits in individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their family members are associated with retinal function.

This study aims to evaluate if the reduced sensitivity to global motion observed in some individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with altered retinal processing. Motion coherence thresholds were measured from individuals with ASD and their family members and compared to the test reference limits derived from control participants. The light adapted electroretinogram (ERG) a- and b-wave amplitudes and peak-times, and photopic negative response (PhNR) parameters were measured from the ASD individuals and their families and compared to those of controls. Abnormally high motio

Can the occipital alpha-phase speed up visual detection through a real-time EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI)?

Electrical brain oscillations reflect fluctuations in neural excitability. Fluctuations in the alpha band (α, 8-12 Hz) in the occipito-parietal cortex are thought to regulate sensory responses, leading to cyclic variations in visual perception. Inspired by this theory, some past and recent studies have addressed the relationship between α-phase from extra-cranial EEG and behavioural responses to visual stimuli in humans. The latest studies have used offline approaches to confirm α-gated cyclic patterns. However, a particularly relevant implication is the possibility to use this principle onlin

Effects of uphill high-intensity interval exercise on muscle damage and exercise performance during recovery.

BACKGROUND: Active recovery is believed to offer positive benefits related to exercise by improving recovery and potentially managing several symptoms following strenuous exercise. The current study aimed to verify the effects of a session of low-volume and uphill high-intensity interval exercise on muscle soreness and exercise performance within the recovery period after an exercise-induced muscle damage protocol. METHODS: Thirty-one young physically active subjects completed two identical test sessions following an exercise-induced muscle damage protocol, separated by a three-week period, i

Women Have Reduced Ability to Discriminate Body Odors During the Withdrawal Period of Oral Contraception.

INTRODUCTION: Women's olfactory perception varies across the menstrual cycle. The influence of oral contraceptives on this variability remains unclear. METHODS: To further estimate this, we assessed discrimination performance for both body odors and ordinary odorants in 36 women, 18 naturally ovulating, and 18 using oral contraceptives. Each participant was tested once a week over the course of a month, and data was then parsed into menstrual phases. RESULTS: In naturally ovulating women, at the transition from follicular to luteal phases, there was a decline of 19% (p = 0.003) in olfactory

Quiet Time: A Noise Reduction Initiative in a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: High noise levels in intensive care units are common. Increased noise levels can lead to sleep deprivation, increased pain perception, and delirium. The most common cause of reducible noise in intensive care units often is attributed to staff conversations. OBJECTIVES: In January 2015, the neurosurgical intensive care unit staff identified noise as a problem, referencing complaints from other disciplines and family members. Quiet times from 3 am to 5 am and from 3 pm to 5 pm were agreed upon. An improvement plan was developed with a goal to decrease noise levels by 10 decibels in

Koumine enhances spinal cord 3α-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase expression and activity in a rat model of neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: Koumine is an alkaloid monomer found abundantly in Gelsemium plants. It has been shown to reverse thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia induced by sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) in rats in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, this effect is mediated by elevated allopregnanolone levels in the spinal cord (SC). Since 3α-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase (3α-HSOR), the key synthetase of allopregnanolone, is responsible for allopregnanolone upregulation in the SC, the objective of the present study was to investigate the role of its expression in the SC in koumi

Video-assisted palatopharyngeal surgery: a model for improved education and training.

Objective : The learning process for intraoral procedures is arguably more difficult than for other surgical procedures because of the assistant's severely limited visibility. Consequently, trainees may not be able to adequately see and follow all steps of the procedure, and attending surgeons may be less willing to entrust trainees with critical portions of the procedure. In this report, we propose a video-assisted approach to intraoral procedures that improves lighting, visibility, and potential for effective education and training. Design : Technical report (idea/innovation). Setting : Tert

Modeling the time-varying and level-dependent effects of the medial olivocochlear reflex in auditory nerve responses.

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) has been hypothesized to provide benefit for listening in noisy environments. This advantage can be attributed to a feedback mechanism that suppresses auditory nerve (AN) firing in continuous background noise, resulting in increased sensitivity to a tone or speech. MOC neurons synapse on outer hair cells (OHCs), and their activity effectively reduces cochlear gain. The computational model developed in this study implements the time-varying, characteristic frequency (CF) and level-dependent effects of the MOCR within the framework of a well-established mod

Cross-sex hormone treatment does not change sex-sensitive cognitive performance in gender identity disorder patients.

Cognitive performance in untreated early onset gender identity disorder (GID) patients might correspond to their born sex and not to their perceived gender. As a current mode of intervention, cross-sex hormone treatment causes considerable physical changes in GID patients. We asked, as has been suggested, whether this treatment skews cognitive performance towards that of the acquired sex. Somatically healthy male and female early onset GID patients were neuropsychologically tested before, 3 and 12 months after initiating cross-sex hormone treatment, whereas untreated healthy subjects without G

Interactive detection and visualization of breast lesions from dynamic contrast enhanced MRI volumes.

Mammography is currently regarded as the most effective and widely used method for early detection of breast cancer, but recently its sensitivity in certain high risk cases has been less than desired. The use of Dynamic Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) has gained considerable attention in the past 10 years, especially for high risk cases, for smaller multi-focal lesions, or very sparsely distributed lesions. In this work, we present an interactive visualization system to identify, process, visualize and quantify lesions from DCE-MRI volumes. Our approach has the following

Evaluation of Speech Recognition in Noise in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Analytical Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with multiple systemic complications, including vascular and neuropathic changes that can affect the auditory pathway. These alterations may contribute to hearing loss and difficulty in speech perception, particularly in noisy environments. This study aimed to evaluate speech recognition in noise among patients with T2DM using the Signal-to-Noise Ratio 50 (SNR-50) and to examine its relationship with disease duration and glycemic control. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care hos
