Interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features: a new classification still on the move.

IPAF classification criteria include several autoimmune conditions with different evolution. The progression into established CTD is common and a continuous up-to-date process of classification criteria of both IPAF and CTD is mandatory. http://ow.ly/pXNW30knUzl

Footnotes to Kraepelin: changes in the classification of mood disorders with DSM-5.

SUMMARY: Reliable diagnosis of mood disorders continues to pose a challenge. This is surprising because they have been recognised clinically since classical times. Mood disorders are also common: major depressive disorder affects nearly 300 million people worldwide and bipolar affective disorder nearly 60 million and they are a major cause of disability. Nonetheless, the reliability trials of the updated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) found that the reliability of the diagnosis of major depressive disorder was in the 'questionable' range. Although the reliability of t

Classification and scoring systems for metastatic spine tumors: a literature review.

IntroductionAccurate evaluation of metastasis and life prognosis is essential for selecting a suitable therapeutic strategy for metastatic spine tumors owing to limitations in treatment options. For this purpose, various classification, evaluation, and scoring systems have been developed.MethodsClassification, evaluation, and scoring systems for metastatic spine tumors reported to date were identified by performing a literature search on PubMed. We reviewed the most cited classifications and scorings before 2009, and all classifications and scorings reported after 2010 from the search results.…

A Morphological Classification Scheme for the Mandibular Hypoplasia in Treacher Collins Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular hypoplasia is a hallmark of Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS), and its severity accounts for significant functional morbidity. The purpose of this study is to develop a mandibular classification scheme. METHODS: A classification scheme was designed based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) scans to assess 3 characteristic features: degree of condylar hypoplasia, mandibular plane angle (condylion-gonion-menton), and degree of retrognathia (sella-nasion-B point angle). Each category was graded from I to IV and a composite mandible classification was determined …

Proposal of a Classification System for the Assessment and Treatment of Prominent Ear Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Prominent ear is the most common external ear deformity. To comprehensively treat prominent ear deformity, adequate comprehension of its pathophysiology is crucial. In this article, we analyze cases of prominent ear and suggest a simple classification system and treatment algorithm according to pathophysiology. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a total of 205 Northeast Asian patients' clinical data who underwent an operation for prominent ear deformity. Follow-up assessments were conducted 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Prominent ear deformities were classified by diagnosti…

Incidence and Classification of Chest Wall Deformities in Breast Augmentation Patients.

Although chest wall deformities (CWDs) are seen four times more often in males than in females, most patients who consult plastic surgery clinics in our country are females. Breast augmentation and augmentation mastopexy were performed with a total of 812 breast implants in 406 patients. Forty-three of these patients had various CWDs. The CWD patient ages ranged from 18 to 43 years. Patients were observed for 6 months to 8 years (mean of approximately 3 years). Pectus excavatum (PE) was present in 22 patients, pectus carinatum (PC) in five patients, Poland syndrome (PS) in two patients, sunken

Applicability of EULAR/ACR classification criteria for dermatomyositis to amyopathic disease.

BACKGROUND: Existing classification systems for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) fail to permit classification and/or diagnosis of amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) in patients. OBJECTIVE: In light of the new European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR) classification criteria for IIM, we evaluated the likelihood of the skin variables included in the EULAR/ACR criteria (Gottron's sign, Gottron's papules, and heliotrope rash) to give a high probability of classifying patients with ADM. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 211 adult patients wi…

The goal of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the published data on talar neck fractures for a better understanding of the postoperative clinical outcomes using open reduction and internal fixation stratified by Hawkins type. A PubMed search was performed using the keywords "talar," "neck," and "fracture." This search identified 209 potential studies, which were reviewed to yield 16 studies that met the criteria. The surgical outcomes of talar neck fractures stratified by the Hawkins classification analyzed in the present study were as follows: American Orthopaedic Foot a…

Purpose To evaluate the associations between CT findings of thymomas and their classification according to the Masaoka staging system and World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Material and Methods Eighty-four patients with thymoma were evaluated. Comparisons between the CT findings of Masaoka stage I/II and III/IV lesions, and the WHO type A-B1 (low risk) and B2/B3 (high risk) lesions were performed. Results Stage III/IV thymomas (mean size, 60 mm) were significantly larger …

Update from the latest WHO classification of MPNs: a user's manual.

The 2016 multiparameter World Health Organization (WHO) classification for Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) integrates clinical features, morphology, and genetic data to diagnose polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). The main novelties are: (1) the reduction of the hemoglobin (Hb) level threshold to diagnose PV, now established at 16.5 g/dL for men and 16 g/dL for women (based on the identification of MPN patients with PV-consistent bone marrow [BM] features and a Hb level lower than that established in the 2008 WHO cl…

A copeptin-based classification of the osmoregulatory defects in the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis.

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), also referred to as syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD), is the most common cause of hyponatremia characterized by extracellular hypotonicity and impaired urine dilution in the absence of any recognizable nonosmotic stimuli for the antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP). Hyponatremia in SIADH is primarily the result of excessive water retention caused by a combination of inappropriate antidiuresis and persistent fluid intake in the presence of impaired osmoregulated inhibition of thirst. It is sometimes ag

Trigeminal neuralgia: New classification and diagnostic grading for practice and research.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an exemplary condition of neuropathic facial pain. However, formally classifying TN as neuropathic pain based on the grading system of the International Association for the Study of Pain is complicated by the requirement of objective signs confirming an underlying lesion or disease of the somatosensory system. The latest version of the International Classification of Headache Disorders created similar difficulties by abandoning the term symptomatic TN for manifestations caused by major neurologic disease, such as tumors or multiple sclerosis. These diagnostic chall…
