We report a case of mediastinitis complicating a dental infection in a 40-year-old male. Despite drainage of the localised neck abscess and the administration of systemic antibiotics, his submandibular abscess extended to involve the pericardial and pleural cavities. Drainage procedures and thoracotomies were required to treat the empyema and purulent pericarditis. Computed tomography was used to follow the progression of disease and assess the efficacy of treatment.

A case of spontaneous acute infrarenal aortic dissection, with extension to the right common iliac artery and proximally to just below the origin of the renal arteries is presented. This dissection did not involve the visceral vessels nor the iliac system. The diagnosis was made with ultrasonography and computed tomography, without the need for angiography, and confirmed during surgical intervention, in which, prosthetic replacement of the affected segment was carried out.

A computer system was designed and applied to anorectal manometry that allows pressure data to be analysed in various ways. Two kinds of applications were presented. Image analysis enabled anorectal movements to be visualized as a three-dimensional image. This technique was shown to be useful in studying the pathophysiology of chronic constipation in children. Radial variation analysis demonstrated that there was no significant radial difference in the anal-canal pressure.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a central nervous system anomaly that may be associated with other intracranial abnormalities. It is easily diagnosed in the postnatal period by computed tomographic scan and ultrasound. However, its prenatal sonographic diagnosis remains a challenge. This report will evaluate three cases of fetal agenesis of the corpus callosum, review the antenatal sonographic findings and postnatal outcomes, and provide criteria for the antenatal diagnosis.

Spot diagrams are computer generated by skew ray tracing for a model of the human eye which is corrected by means of a contact lens and spectacle lens. An examination of the images of a point source of light at 0 degrees and 20 degrees off the optical axis of the eye-lens system are shown. For the correction of aphakia, the performance of the contact lens is shown to be superior in off-axis optical performance.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the moderate and severe stages can present several walk alterations. They can show slow movements and difficulty initiating, varying, or interrupting their gait; freezing; short steps; speed changes; shuffling; little arm swing; and festinating gait. The Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) has a good reputation for uniformly evaluating motor and non-motor aspects of PD. However, the motor clinical assessment depends on visual observations, the results are qualitative, and subtle differences are not identified.
