Testicular Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Testicular cancer is the most common solid tumor among males 15 to 34 years of age, with an estimated 8,850 new cases and 410 deaths during 2017 in the United States. With effective treatment, the overall five-year survival rate is 97%. Risk factors for testicular cancer include undescended testis (cryptorchidism), personal or family history of testicular cancer, age, ethnicity, and infertility. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against routine screening in asymptomatic men. Men with symptoms should receive a complete history and physical examination. Impact of simulation-based learning on immediate outcomes of temporary haemodialysis catheter placements by nephrology fellows.

AIM: Traditional apprenticeship model (AM) of teaching in invasive procedures such as temporary haemodialysis catheter (THDC) insertion can result in propagation of errors and complications. Simulation-based learning (SBL) offers standardization of skills and allows trainees to repeatedly practice invasive procedures prior to performing them on actual patient. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of first-, second- and third-year Nephrology Fellows from a tertiary teaching hospital from September 2008 to September 2015. The intervention group (n = 9) received simulation training in ultrasound-

Cardiology-cardiothoracic subspeciality training in South Africa: a position paper of the South Africa Heart Association.

Over the past decades, South Africa has undergone rapid demographic changes, which have led to marked increases in specific cardiac disease categories, such as rheumatic heart disease (now predominantly presenting in young adults with advanced and symptomatic disease) and coronary artery disease (with rapidly increasing prevalence in middle age). The lack of screening facilities, delayed diagnosis and inadequate care at primary, secondary and tertiary levels have led to a large burden of patients with heart failure. This leads to suffering of the patients and substantial costs to society and t

Sociocultural and Academic Considerations for School-Age d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners: A Case Study of a Deaf Latina.

For decades , research has focused on American Sign Language/English bilingual education for d/Deaf and hard of hearing students whose families used English or ASL. However, a growing population of d/Dhh children come from households where languages other than English (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese) are used. In a longitudinal case study, the authors document the K-12 educational pathway of a deaf Latina student. Anecdotal records, semistructured interviews, assessment data, and document reviews of the participant's school and clinical records are used to develop the case study. The findi

Increasing self-determination: teaching people with mental retardation to evaluate residential options.

The community living preferences of 4 institutionalized adults with mild mental retardation were identified using photographs that depicted a variety of residential characteristics. Individuals then were taught to obtain information regarding their preferences during tours of community group homes, to report that information to their social workers, and to evaluate the homes based on the information obtained. A multiple baseline across participants design showed that all 4 participants substantially increased their skills at asking questions, reporting information, and evaluating homes. the re

Comparing the effects of neonatal intensive care unit intervention on premature infants at different weights.

This study investigated the efficacy of an intervention program in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on the development of premature infants from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds. Sixty premature infants born at a county hospital over an 8-month period and their mothers were the focus of this study. The infants were assigned to either a control group or an experimental group. The experimental group received teaching and reinforcement about their babies' behavior from a child development specialist when they visited the NICU. Of the initial 60 infants, 49 completed the study at

Syphilis: Far from Ancient History.

Rates of primary, secondary, and congenital syphilis are increasing in the United States, and reversing this trend requires renewed vigilance on the part of family physicians to assist public health agencies in the early detection of outbreaks. Prompt diagnosis of syphilis can be challenging, and not all infected patients have common manifestations, such as a genital chancre or exanthem. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for syphilis in all patients at increased risk, particularly those who reside in high-prevalence areas, sexually active people with HIV infection, a
