BACKGROUND: There are multiple studies about the effectiveness of primary treatment in Dupuytren's disease. However, such studies concerning treatment effectiveness of recurrent disease are scarce. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to compare treatment effectiveness of initial and repeated surgery in patients with Dupuytren's disease.
METHODS: Patients who underwent both initial and repeated treatment were selected from a prospectively maintained database. Outcome measurements consisted of finger goniometry, the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire, and complications. Treatment eff

PURPOSE: The treatment of comminuted fractures of the proximal interphalangeal joint is highly challenging due to the complexities of joint bio-mechanics and stability. The hemi-hamate osteochondral auto-graft has been popularised in this role, able to replace articular loss and restore joint stability. Recent evaluation of their long-term follow-up however has shown the early development of osteoarthritis and potential early cartilage loss, which may be due to the non-vascularised nature of the graft. We offer a new technique that maintains vascularisation of the transferred hamate fragment,

We report a case of Liebenberg syndrome in a 6-year-old girl, including the clinical, radiological, angiographic, and operative findings. We note that the forearm and hand malformations have similarities to leg and foot anatomy. Our observations may help provide insight into the etiology of this unusual condition.

Patients with Van der Woude syndrome typically present with cleft lip, cleft lip and palate, or with cleft palate only. In contrast to non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate, Van der Woude syndrome typically is characterized by bilateral, paramedian lower-lip pits. Popliteal pterygium syndrome shares features with Van der Woude syndrome, but, in addition, is characterized by a popliteal pterygium, genital anomalies, cutaneous syndactyly of the fingers and the toes, and a characteristic pyramidal fold of skin overlying the nail of the hallux. In some patients oral synechiae or eyelid synechiae a

Receptor-interacting protein kinase 4 (RIPK4)-deficient mice have epidermal defects and fusion of all external orifices. These are similar to Bartsocas-Papas syndrome and popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) in humans, for which causative mutations have been documented in the RIPK4 and IRF6 (interferon regulatory factor 6) gene, respectively. Although genetically distinct, these syndromes share the anomalies of marked pterygia, syndactyly, clefting and hypoplastic genitalia. Despite the strong resemblance of these two syndromes, no molecular connection between the transcription factor IRF6 and t

This study was conducted to determine the frequency and nature of basketball injuries occurring in a rural setting. More than 6000 patients with sports-related injuries presented to a rural emergency department between June 1, 1988 and June 1, 1994. Of these patients, 1189 (19% of the total) were injured playing basketball. A chart abstraction form was utilized to retrospectively review injuries noting demographics, types and sites of injuries, as well as referral and treatment plans. Approximately two-thirds (66.4%) of those injured were males, with most injuries (53%) occurring during school

Age-related motor impairments often cause caregiver dependency or even hospitalization. However, comprehensive investigations of the different motor abilities and the changes thereof across the adult lifespan remain sparse. We, therefore, extensively assessed essential basic and complex motor functions in 444 healthy adults covering a wide age range (range 21 to 88 years). Basic motor functions, here defined as simple isolated single or repetitive movements in one direction, were assessed by means of maximum grip strength (GS) and maximum finger-tapping frequency (FTF). Complex motor functions

INTRODUCTION: Current clinical assessments measure selective voluntary motor control (SVMC) on an ordinal scale. We introduce a playful, interval-scaled method to assess SVMC in children with brain lesions and evaluate its validity and reliability.
METHODS: Thirty-one neurologically intact children (median [1st-3rd quartile]: 11.6 years [8.5-13.9]) and 33 patients (12.2 years [8.8-14.9]) affected by upper motor neuron lesions with mild to moderate impairments participated. Using accelerometers, they played a movement tracking game (assessgame) with isolated joint movements (shoulder, elbow, l

BACKGROUND: Metacarpal fractures are among the most common fractures of the hand. They may lead to loss of function if treated improperly. These injuries can be treated conservatively. However, if significant shortening, rotational deformity and angulation occur, surgical treatment is required. In this article, results of metacarpal fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation with mini plates were presented.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiologic records of twenty-nine consecutive patients with 37 metacarpal fractures treated by open reduction and int

The authors report a new cutaneous flap harvested from the dorsal and distal quarter of the forearm: the dorsoradial flap. The vascularisation type of the cutaneous paddle belongs this flap to the anterograde and axial family flaps. The anatomical study carried out on thirty six fresh cadaver upper arms showed a constant and a consistent cutaneous collateral branch of the radial artery which arises at the apex of the first intermetacarpal space. Two anatomical types were recorded according to the origin of the dorsoradial artery: type I (84% of cases), the vessel arises directly from the radia

INTRODUCTION: Modern wearable electronics demand materials that are simultaneously stretchable, conductive, and environmentally robust. Hydrogels meet some of these requirements but dehydrate or freeze easily. To overcome these limitations, we prepared a poly-ionic-liquid (PIL) ionogel that integrates high elasticity with stable ionic conductivity, aiming to enable reliable, skin-compatible strain and biopotential sensing.

Crushing and eating hard prey (durophagy) is mechanically demanding. The cartilage jaws of durophagous stingrays are known to be reinforced relative to non-durophagous relatives, with a thickened external cortex of mineralized blocks (tesserae), reinforcing struts inside the jaw (trabeculae), and pavement-like dentition. These strategies for skeletal strengthening against durophagy, however, are largely understood only from myliobatiform stingrays, although a hard prey diet has evolved multiple times in batoid fishes (rays, skates, guitarfishes). We perform a quantitative analysis of micro-CT
