Evaluating the South Oaks Gambling Screen with DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria: results from a diverse community sample of gamblers.

Despite widespread use, the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) has been criticized for excessive false positives as an indicator of pathological gambling (PG), and for items that misalign with PG criteria. We examine the relationship between SOGS scores and PG symptoms and convergent validity with regard to personality, mood, and addictive behaviors in a sample of 353 gamblers. SOGS scores correlated r = .66 with both DSM-IV and DSM-5 symptoms, and they manifested similar correlations with external criteria (intraclass correlation of .95). However, 195 false positives and 1 false negative were

[Interrater-reliability of the OPD-CA, the axes conflict and structure].

The reliability of the meanwhile widely used Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics in childhood and adolescence (OPD-CA) is only rarely examined. By means of audiovisual recordings of OPD-CA-interviews with 39 adolescents in the context of a randomized-controlled psychotherapy study for the treatment female adolescents with bulimia nervosa and atypical bulimia nervosa the reliability of the axis conflict and the axis structure were examined. This was carried out by the calculation of Intraklassen-correlations of three raters. The rater agreements ranged from good to excellent, except for i

Genetic variation at the TPH2 gene influences impulsivity in addition to eating disorders.

Genes are involved in eating disorders (EDs) and self-induced vomiting (SV), a key symptom of different types of EDs. Perfectionism and impulsivity are potential risk factors for EDs. TPH2 (tryptophan hydroxylase 2) SNP rs1473473 was previously associated with anorexia nervosa and EDs characterized by SV. Could perfectionism or impulsivity be underlying the association between rs1473473 and EDs? Genetic association between TPH2 SNP rs1473473 and perfectionism or impulsivity was first evaluated in a random control group (N = 512). The associations obtained in this control group were subsequentl

Activation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory system in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with borderline personality disorder.

A case-control study including patients (n = 20) with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and healthy controls (n = 33) was carried out. To avoid interferences of other clinical conditions on biological findings, patients were free of current major depressive episodes or substance dependence disorders, and had no life history of schizophrenia, bipolar or neuropsychiatric disorders. Patients were free of medication for at least two weeks at the time of the study. Studies carried out in peripheral mononuclear blood cells and plasma evidence a systemic inflammatory condition in unstable-impulsi

Impulse control disorders associated with dopaminergic medication in patients with pituitary adenomas.

OBJECTIVE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, compulsive eating, and hypersexuality are a matter of growing interest, especially in patients with Parkinson disease who are on dopamine replacement therapy. It was recently reported that ICDs are associated with other disorders also treated with dopaminergic drugs (dopamine agonists) such as restless legs syndrome, multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, and fibromyalgia. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ICDs in patients with pituitary adenomas who take dop

Characterizing impulsivity in mania.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether specific aspects of impulsivity (response disinhibition, inability to delay gratification, inattention) differ between healthy and bipolar manic subjects, and whether these aspects of impulsivity were associated with each other and severity of affective symptoms. METHODS: Performance of 70 bipolar I manic or mixed patients was compared to that of 34 healthy subjects on three tasks specifically designed to study response inhibition, ability to delay gratification, and attention; namely, a stop signal task, a delayed reward task, and a continuous performance task

Stimulus context and motor preparation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

AIM: To investigate (1) whether and how local stimulus context variation may modify behavioural and preparatory motor processes in children, and (2) if these effects differ between healthy children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aged 9-12 years. METHODS: Behavioural parameters and contingent negative variation (CNV) at cortical motor electrodes were recorded during a cued continuous performance task (AX-CPT) in three stimulus context conditions (Go, NoGo, neutral). Stimulus context was varied on the basis of stimulus types preceding the cue letter A. RESULT

Lifetime comorbidity of alcohol dependence in women with bulimia nervosa.

To determine how women with comorbid bulimia nervosa and alcohol dependence differed from those with bulimia nervosa alone, 114 women with DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa were assessed at intake for a randomized clinical trial with structure diagnostic interviews and psychometric instruments. The sample was divided on the basis of the presence (47%) or absence (53%) of lifetime alcohol dependence. Axis I and Axis II disorders, clinical features of bulimia, and personality and temperament characteristics were then compared. Women with comorbid alcohol dependence and bulimia nervosa reported a higher

Increased reflection impulsivity in patients with ephedrone-induced Parkinsonism.

AIMS: To examine a syndrome of chronic manganism that occurs in drug addicts in eastern Europe who use intravenous methcathinone (ephedrone) contaminated with potassium permanganate. In many cases the basal ganglia, especially the globus pallidus and the putamen, are damaged irreversibly. Routine neuropsychological assessment has revealed no cognitive deficits, despite widespread abnormalities on brain imaging studies and severe extrapyramidal motor handicap on clinical examination. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Ephedrone patients and patients with opioid dependence were recruited fro

Social, demographic, and clinical factors related to disruptive behaviour in hospital.

OBJECTIVE: This study addresses 2 issues: first, whether the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) or borderline traits differentiates adult patients who demonstrate disruptive behaviour during hospitalization from those patients who do not; and second, whether other clinical variables can be assessed during the emergency visit to differentiate patients who are likely to show disruptive behaviour in hospital from those who are not. METHOD: We completed a case-control, chart-based, retrospective analysis of patients consecutively admitted to an inpatient psychiatric service. We as

Regional and temporal dynamics of DNA methylation and epigenetic gene regulation in response to binge-like alcohol exposure in the adolescent mouse brain.

Adolescence is a critical late phase of the neurodevelopment, characterized by marked brain plasticity and increased vulnerability to environmental challenges such as alcohol exposure. This study examined the impact of binge-like alcohol exposure in male Swiss Webster mice, focusing on oxidative damage, epigenetic and transcriptional alterations in key brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, striatum and hippocampus. Our results demonstrated that acute alcohol exposure during adolescence induces oxidative damage with significant alterations in global DNA methylation and gene

Identifying Neurodevelopmental Domain Subgroups in Autism and ADHD.

PURPOSE: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have considerable overlap in clinical presentation, supporting the need for a framework of symptom domains which crosses traditional diagnostic boundaries. We aimed to identify latent groups based on similarities in factor scores across ASD and ADHD neurodevelopmental domains and to compare these groups on adaptive functioning and neuroimaging measures. METHODS: Participants included children and youth with a clinical diagnosis of ASD (n = 727) or ADHD (n = 770). Parents completed measures of autism and

Psychological correlates of problematic pornography use: A systematic review and meta-analysis of measurement and conceptualization differences.

Problematic Pornography Use (PPU) has been linked to a wide range of psychological correlates, however findings across studies remain inconsistent. One possible explanation is that PPU has been operationalized using conceptually distinct approaches emphasizing either behavioral dysregulation or subjective distress, including moral incongruence and negative self-evaluation. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized psychological correlates of PPU and examined whether associations varied across different operationalizations of the construct.A systematic search identified 97 articles c

The Transdiagnostic Role of Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Repetitive Negative Thinking in Depression, Anxiety, and Their Comorbidity.

This study investigated emotion regulation (ER) difficulties and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) in individuals with depression, anxiety disorders, or both, compared to nonclinical controls. We aimed to determine which aspects of ER difficulties and RNT are transdiagnostic or specific to one of the disorders, and whether the presence of comorbidities is associated with greater ER difficulties and higher levels of RNT. A total of N = 731 participants, including n = 354 individuals with depression, anxiety disorders, or both (mixed group), and n = 377 nonclinical controls, completed the Diffi

The Concept of Recovery in Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder - A Scoping Review.

Recovery is a central concept in the fields of mental health and addiction, yet its definition remains a subject of debate. Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), classified in the ICD-11 as an impulse control disorder, is a relatively prevalent mental health concern. This scoping review mapped and summarized the state of art of the concept of recovery in CSBD, including study characteristics, terminology and measures used, main recovery approach (deficit-based versus strengths-based, or mixed), and the key aims of these studies. Embase, Medline, PsycInfo, and the Web of Science were sear

Comparing self and informant perspectives on neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults in a memory clinic.

BackgroundIn individuals with cognitive deficit, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are typically assessed through informant-based reports. In contrast, affective symptoms in cognitively normal individuals are typically evaluated using self-report measures, leveraging their sufficient insight. Comparison of these assessments in previous studies indicated differences in their perspectives.ObjectiveWe aimed to analyze differences between self- and informant-reported NPS using the Mild Behavioral Impairment-Checklist (MBI-C) and their relationship with cognitive deficit.MethodsThe study included 127

Decoding the bidirectional links between alcohol misuse and aggression: toward a unified translational framework.

RATIONALE: The relationship between alcohol misuse and aggression has long intrigued clinical and preclinical researchers. While acute alcohol use is well known to promote aggression, converging evidence indicates a more complex, bidirectional association. Both behaviors often arise from shared genetic, neurobiological, and environmental vulnerabilities and can mutually increase risk, creating a vicious spiral in which alcohol misuse and aggression reinforce one another over time. OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes epidemiological, clinical, and experimental findings to establish an integrate

Verbal memory dysfunction in substance use and gambling addictive disorders: a comparative analysis of performance accuracy and error typologies.

Addiction is increasingly recognized as a disorder involving not only reward dysregulation but also alterations in core cognitive processes, including learning and memory. Although various studies have documented memory impairments in substance use and behavioral addictions, evidence remains inconsistent-particularly regarding verbal memory deficits and the diagnostic relevance of specific recall error types. This study investigated immediate and delayed verbal memory performance and error patterns in 515 individuals, including patients with stimulant use disorder, alcohol use disorder, cannab
