Diagnosis and management of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases in Dutch nursing homes: a qualitative study among healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) are common but often underrecognized in nursing home residents, potentially resulting in suboptimal management and reduced quality of life. This qualitative study explored experiences of health care professionals (HCPs), specifically lead clinicians (elderly care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) and physiotherapists, related to diagnosing and managing RMDs in nursing homes. METHODS: HCPs were purposively sampled for a semi-structured interview. An inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data system

Exploring phytomedicine in space medicine: Addressing health challenges in microgravity.

BACKGROUND: Space exploration introduces unique health challenges for astronauts, including musculoskeletal degradation, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular alterations, primarily due to microgravity and space radiation. Conventional solutions like synthetic drugs face limitations such as side effects and storage constraints during long missions. Phytomedicine, derived from plant bioactive compounds, offers a promising alternative to address these challenges through multitargeted therapeutic actions. However, most evidence on these plant-based interventions comes from te

CRITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF FEMALE BONE METABOLISM IN ORTHOPEDICS: STATE OF THE ART.

Female bone metabolism is a dynamic and tightly regulated process that plays a pivotal role in musculoskeletal health and orthopedic outcomes across the lifespan. Bone remodeling depends on the balance between osteoblastic bone formation and osteoclastic bone resorption and is strongly influenced by hormonal status, nutrition, genetics, physical activity, and systemic disease. In women, this balance is profoundly affected by reproductive and aging-related transitions, including adolescence, pregnancy and lactation, perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Maximal peak bone mass is typicall

B0092 tumor-bearing mice are a new model for the study of cachexia in head and neck cancer.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) accounts for ∼4% of all cancers but causes ∼15,000 deaths annually in the United States. Over 40% of HNC patients present with cachexia, a severe comorbidity associated with skeletal muscle defects, worsened treatment response, and poor outcomes. The mechanisms behind HNC cachexia remain unclear, partly due to limited small animal models. This study characterizes functional and molecular features of cachexia in a novel preclinical model using tobacco-induced B0092 oral squamous cell carcinoma in C57BL/6J mice. C2C12 myotubes were exposed to various concentrations of

Expanding the clinical spectrum: A case report of the first Jordanian presentation of KID syndrome with neurological and skeletal anomalies beyond the classical triad.

RATIONALE: Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome is a rare ectodermal disorder caused by pathogenic mutations in GJB2 gene, which encodes the gap junction protein connexin 26. While the condition is traditionally defined by a triad of keratitis, ichthyosis, and sensorineural hearing loss, emerging evidence suggests that connexin 26 dysfunction may lead to broader systemic involvement. This case highlights a rare presentation with neurological and musculoskeletal abnormalities. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 3-year-old female born at 31 weeks of gestation presented with a history of global develop

Healthcare gaps and inequities following hospitalisation for COVID-19 in Brazil's universal healthcare system: a patient-engaged survey of Long COVID healthcare needs, use and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID (LC) is an infection-associated chronic condition (IACC) that tends to be neglected by healthcare systems. Studies of post-COVID healthcare utilisation find elevated levels of use but have mainly been conducted in high-income settings. In the context of Brazil's universal health system (SUS), our patient-engaged study aimed to map healthcare needs, use, and access barriers related to LC up to 24 months following COVID-19 hospitalisation, in the interest of informing health system planning for an equitable LC response. METHODS: A cohort survey included a probabilistic sa

Disrupted Biotensegrity in the Fiber Cellular Fascial Network and Neuroma Microenvironment: A Conceptual Framework for "Phantom Limb Pain".

Among the leading etiologies of limb amputations are diabetes mellitus, alongside trauma and peripheral vascular disease conditions, whose complications are major indications for surgery, which can subsequently elicit chronic refractory postamputation pain. 'Phantom limb pain' (PLP) denotes pain that is perceived as occurring in an absent part of the limb following amputation. Even though it is a relatively common complication among amputees-with an estimated prevalence as high as ~80 percent-the underlying mechanisms of this puzzling condition remain poorly understood. Current theories predom

Real-world study of adverse events associated with triptan use in migraine treatment based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) adverse event reporting system (FAERS) database.

BACKGROUND: Triptans selectively agoniste 5-Hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) receptors and are widely used in the treatment of migraine. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of comprehensive real-world clinical research on the safety of triptans. In light of the growing prevalence of migraine, it is imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the true extent of adverse events (AEs) associated with triptans in the clinical management of migraine. METHODS: A database query of AEs reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database for triptans was performe

The effect of movement system impairment-based classification treatment compared to routine physiotherapy on pain, disability, alignment, and movement impairments in individuals with tibiofemoral rotation syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal problem. Lower extremity movement impairments could alter stresses in different planes and contribute to knee pain. Classifying these impairments may be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of knee problems. Movement system impairment (MSI)-based classification is a system to evaluate movement impairments. Trials that involve this classification are limited. Therefore, it will be of interest to examine the effect of movement system impairment-based classification treatment compared to routine physiotherapy in individuals with tibiofemoral rot

NeuroMotion: Open-source platform with neuromechanical and deep network modules to generate surface EMG signals during voluntary movement.

Neuromechanical studies investigate how the nervous system interacts with the musculoskeletal (MSK) system to generate volitional movements. Such studies have been supported by simulation models that provide insights into variables that cannot be measured experimentally and allow a large number of conditions to be tested before the experimental analysis. However, current simulation models of electromyography (EMG), a core physiological signal in neuromechanical analyses, remain either limited in accuracy and conditions or are computationally heavy to apply. Here, we provide a computational pla

A retrospective study on the prevalence of main clinical findings in brown bears (Ursus arctos) rescued from substandard husbandry conditions.

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are kept under varied captive conditions, some of which may greatly compromise their welfare. FOUR PAWS is an NGO that rescues some of these bears kept in substandard conditions and houses them in species-appropriate sanctuaries, where preventive and reactive veterinary care is provided. This retrospective study aims to provide an overview of pathologies and clinical abnormalities reported in veterinary records and their prevalence according to body system affected and pre-rescue bear origin. Origin was categorised as subzoo (bears coming from substandard zoos), danc

Gait disorders in the elderly and dual task gait analysis: a new approach for identifying motor phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Gait disorders and gait analysis under single and dual-task conditions are topics of great interest, but very few studies have looked for the relevance of gait analysis under dual-task conditions in elderly people on the basis of a clinical approach. METHODS: An observational study including 103 patients (mean age 76.3 ± 7.2, women 56%) suffering from gait disorders or memory impairment was conducted. Gait analysis under dual-task conditions was carried out for all patients. Brain MRI was performed in the absence of contra-indications. Three main gait variables were measured: walk
