Artificial neural network modeling and optimization of an electrochemical biosensor for plasma miR-155-based breast cancer detection.

MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) is a clinically important biomarker involved in cancer progression, immune regulation, and inflammatory diseases, highlighting the need for sensitive and reliable detection methods. Conventional biosensor fabrication often relies on labor-intensive trial-and-error optimization, which delays the development of practical diagnostic tools. In contrast to most previous studies that focus on predicting analyte concentration from biosensor signals, this work develops a data-driven framework for modeling the nonlinear relationships between fabrication parameters and biosensor o

Neonatal jaundice detection using a vision transformer-based deep learning model.

Neonatal jaundice is a prevalent and potentially serious condition that can lead to severe complications if undiagnosed or untreated. While traditional diagnostic methods like blood sampling are invasive and time-consuming, and transcutaneous bilirubinometers remain costly, smartphone-based image analysis offers a promising low-cost, non-invasive alternative. However, most existing solutions rely on traditional machine learning techniques with limited accuracy and generalizability. In this study, we introduce a deep learning approach based on the Vision Transformer (T2T-ViT) and compare its pe

Enhanced diabetic retinopathy detection via multimodal fusion of fundus imaging features and clinical demographic information using verifiable convolutional neural network.

Traditional systems of ocular disease diagnosis and many deep learning-based systems are limited in their practice to analyzing fundus images from a single eye, often using raw, unprocessed data. This fails to include the critical correlation between bilateral eyes, has several issues such as low image contrast, noise, and class imbalance, and generally concentrates on the detection of no more than a single disease. In order to bridge the gap, Enhanced Diabetic Retinopathy Detection through Multimodal Integration of Fundus Imaging Features and Clinical Demographic Information utilizing Verifia

SC-MSDNet: Spatial-consistent multi-view self-distillation for retinal OCT classification.

Current OCT classification models achieve high benchmark accuracy but exhibit poor generalization when imaging conditions vary between datasets. We introduce spatial-consistent learning, where depth-wise feature coherence becomes an explicit optimization constraint rather than a post-hoc interpretation tool. SC-MSDNet partitions convolutional features into horizontal bands, enforcing cross-view consistency within each region through LSC loss while LMV ensures prediction agreement across original, contrast-enhanced, and frequency-transformed inputs. Trained exclusively on OCT2017 (4 classes, 84

A deep learning approach for keratoconus detection using spatio-temporal features from corneal imaging.

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal disease that requires early and accurate detection to prevent severe visual impairment. This study presents a deep learning-based classification model for distinguishing between healthy and keratoconic eyes using dynamic corneal imaging data from the CORVIS system. A hybrid CNN-RNN architecture was developed, combining a fine-tuned InceptionV3 network for spatial feature extraction with a recurrent LSTM module to capture temporal patterns across image sequences. To ensure robust evaluation, a 10-fold stratified cross-validation strategy was employed, with d

Neural parameter calibration for dengue outbreak forecasting.

Dengue fever poses a growing public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, with transmission driven by complex interactions among viral and host. Computational models, often expressed as ordinary differential equations (ODEs), are widely used to understand complex systems such as dengue fever transmission dynamics. However, traditional parameter estimation methods such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) often require complex setups and are computationally expensive. In this study, we choose a compartmental model extended to human and mosquito populations, estimate its parameters

A survey of deep learning techniques in detecting neurological disorders using MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely regarded as the most reliable non-invasive imaging modality for detecting neurological disorders. However, manual interpretation of MRI scans is often time-consuming and prone to inter-observer variability, which can lead to inconsistencies in diagnosis. The global burden of neurological disorders-including Alzheimer's disease, brain tumors, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and schizophrenia-continues to increase, creating an urgent demand for accurate, scalable, and automated diagnostic solutions. In recent years, deep learning (DL) has emerg

Multijoint Continuous Motion Estimation for Human Lower Limb Based on Surface Electromyography.

The estimation of multijoint angles is of great significance in the fields of lower limb rehabilitation, motion control, and exoskeleton robotics. Accurate joint angle estimation helps assess joint function, assist in rehabilitation training, and optimize robotic control strategies. However, estimating multijoint angles in different movement patterns, such as walking, obstacle crossing, squatting, and knee flexion-extension, using surface electromyography (sEMG) signals remains a challenge. In this study, a model is proposed for the continuous motion estimation of multijoint angles in the lowe

Machine Learning-Powered Optimization of a CHO Cell Cultivation Process.

Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells are the most widely used cell lines to produce recombinant therapeutic proteins such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, the optimization of the CHO cell culture process is very complex and influenced by various factors. This study investigates the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms to optimize an established industrial CHO cell cultivation process. A ML algorithm in the form of an artificial neural network (ANN) was used and trained on datasets from historical and newly generated CHO cell cultivation runs. The algorithm was then used to find better

Interpretable prediction of knee joint loading during tennis serves based on GNN-GRU model and layer-wise relevance propagation.

The knee resultant joint moment is a critical indicator for assessing risk during the tennis serve. Traditional methods for obtaining this metric rely on laboratory-based equipment, limiting practical application. To address this limitation, this study proposes and validates a novel method for predicting the knee resultant joint moment method using a Graph Neural Network and Gated Recurrent Unit (GNN-GRU) model. An independent GRU model was used as a baseline for comparison. Biomechanical data were collected from 30 male tennis players (age: 20.30 ± 1.66 years, height: 176.60 ± 2.74 cm, weight

Characterization of error-related potentials during the command of a lower-limb exoskeleton based on deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) based on motor imagery (MI) are promising assistive neurotechnology tools for gait rehabilitation that allow users to control exoskeletons by imagining motor actions. Literature has proven the influence of BMIs over neuroplasticity mechanisms. However, the accuracy of MI-BMIs is often limited by the weak brain signals associated with lower-limb movements. To enhance system reliability and safety, Error-Related Potentials (ErrP), which are exogenous potentials evoked by erroneous system actions, can be integrated to correct commands. This study charact

A linear-attention based network for estimating continuous upper limb movement from surface electromyography.

Continuous kinematics estimation methods are important in human-machine interaction systems because they offer a more natural and intuitive result than pattern-recognition methods. The estimation of upper-limb movement is important, which involves the estimation of the movement of the elbow and shoulder joints. However, the deformations of muscles around the elbow and shoulder can cause the shifting of the angle sensors. Nevertheless, Vicon can measure joint angles using cameras that have no contact with muscles. In this paper, we propose a Linear-Attention-based model (LABD) rather than other
