Behavioral abnormalities in Alzheimer's disease.

Fundamental and therapeutic research into Alzheimer's disease (AD) initially focused on cognitive aspects. However, AD also frequently involves complex affective and behavioral disorders, which are currently grouped under the heading Behavioral and Psychological Signs and Symptoms of Dementia (BPSSD). BPSSD further handicap the patient in his or her daily activities and are a major source of problems for the family and other carers. Studies of these aspects must take into account various clinical aspects such as the development of reliable tools for assessment and diagnosis. BPSSD can only be

Mechanisms in the cycle of violence.

Two questions concerning the effect of physical abuse in early childhood on the child's development of aggressive behavior are the focus of this article. The first is whether abuse per se has deleterious effects. In earlier studies, in which samples were nonrepresentative and family ecological factors (such as poverty, marital violence, and family instability) and child biological variables (such as early health problems and temperament) were ignored, findings have been ambiguous. Results from a prospective study of a representative sample of 309 children indicated that physical abuse is indee

Poverty dynamics and parental mental health: Determinants of childhood mental health in the UK.

Using data from the British Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), an ongoing longitudinal study of a cohort of 18,827 children born in the UK in 2000-2001, we investigate important correlates of mental health issues during childhood. MCS respondents were sampled at birth, at age 9 months, and then when they were 3, 5, 7 and 11 years old. Each sweep contains detailed information on the family's SES, parenting activities, developmental indicators, parental relationship status, and indicators of parental mental health. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the related Rutter scale were

[Autism Spectrum Disorder and DSM-5: Spectrum or Cluster?].

Within the new DSM-5, the currently differentiated subgroups of "Autistic Disorder" (299.0), "Asperger's Disorder" (299.80) and "Pervasive Developmental Disorder" (299.80) are replaced by the more general "Autism Spectrum Disorder". With regard to a patient-oriented and expedient advising therapy planning, however, the issue of an empirically reproducible and clinically feasible differentiation into subgroups must still be raised. Based on two Autism-rating-scales (ASDS and FSK), an exploratory two-step cluster analysis was conducted with N=103 children (age: 5-18) seen in our social-pediatric

Cortisol rise following awakening among problem gamblers: dissociation from comorbid symptoms of depression and impulsivity.

Gambling pathology has been associated with elevated levels of distress, depression and impulsivity. The present investigation assessed whether these behavioral features would be evident among problem gamblers as they are among pathological gamblers. As well, given that gambling has been associated with increased life stress, as an objective index of ongoing distress, elevations of morning cortisol levels were assessed in problem and pathological gamblers relative to recreational gamblers, and their relations to depressive symptoms and impulsivity were assessed. Recreational, problem, and path

Maternal depressive symptoms, child maltreatment, and children's externalizing problems: A three-wave longitudinal study from preschool to school age.

Although the bidirectional relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and children's externalizing problems has been widely explored, the underlying mechanisms driving this cycle remain unclear. Specifically, the mediating role of child maltreatment-a known detriment to both maternal mental health and child development-has not been elucidated within this transactional dynamic. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationships among maternal depressive symptoms, children's externalizing problems, and child maltreatment from the preschool to school-age periods. Data were draw

Decision-Making, Cognitive Distortions and Alcohol Use in Adolescent Problem and Non-problem Gamblers: An Experimental Study.

In the psychological literature, many studies have investigated the neuropsychological and behavioral changes that occur developmentally during adolescence. These studies have consistently observed a deficit in the decision-making ability of children and adolescents. This deficit has been ascribed to incomplete brain development. The same deficit has also been observed in adult problem and pathological gamblers. However, to date, no study has examined decision-making in adolescents with and without gambling problems. Furthermore, no study has ever examined associations between problem gambling

Longitudinal associations between childhood and adulthood externalizing and internalizing psychopathology and adolescent substance use.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioral problems are commonly associated with substance use in adolescence but it is unclear whether substance use precedes or follows mental health problems. The aim was to investigate longitudinal associations between externalizing and internalizing psychopathology and substance use in a prospective population study design. METHOD: The sample was the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 Study (NFBC 1986; n = 6349; 3103 males). Externalizing and internalizing mental health problems were assessed at age 8 years (Rutter scales), substance use and externalizing and in

Moderators of Response to Personalized and Standard Care Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Comorbid Anxiety.

Anxiety/obsessive-compulsive disorders are common among youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two versions of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are effective, with some advantage for a personalized, adapted version. This study evaluated predictors and moderators of standard CBT and adapted CBT. Youth (N = 167) ages 7-13 were randomized to standard or adapted CBT, or treatment-as-usual. Age, IQ, ASD severity, and emotional-behavioral symptom severity were examined. More severe internalizing and emotional-behavioral problems predicted poorer treatment outcomes especially in standard versus p

A longitudinal analysis of shooter games and their relationship with conduct disorder and cself-reported delinquency.

PURPOSE: Despite several decades of research, little scholarly consensus has emerged regarding the role of violent video games in the development of youth psychopathology or crime. METHOD: The current study employed the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children longitudinal dataset to examine the impact of the shooter game genre ownership in childhood on later adolescent conduct disorder and criminal behavior. ANALYSIS: Multivariate Poisson regressions with the robust estimator correlation matrix were performed comparing effects of independent and confounding variables. RESULTS: Resul

Prediction of HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Disadvantaged African American Adults Using a Syndemic Conceptual Framework.

The focus of this paper is on HIV sexual risk taking among a community-based sample of disadvantaged African American adults. The objective is to examine multiple factors associated with sexual HIV risk behaviors within a syndemic conceptual framework. Face-to-face, computer-assisted, structured interviews were conducted with 1535 individuals in Atlanta, Georgia. Bivariate analyses indicated a high level of relationships among the HIV sexual risks and other factors. Results from multivariate models indicated that gender, sexual orientation, relationship status, self-esteem, condom use self-eff

Changes in food intake and abnormal behavior using a puzzle feeder in newly acquired sub-adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta): a short term study.

The majority of newly acquired nonhuman primates encounter serious problems adapting themselves to new environments or facilities. In particular, loss of appetite and abnormal behavior can occur in response to environmental stresses. These adaptation abnormalities can ultimately have an affect on the animal's growth and well-being. In this study, we evaluated the affects of a puzzle feeder on the food intake and abnormal behavior of newly acquired rhesus monkeys for a short period. The puzzle feeder was applied to 47- to 58-month-old animals that had never previously encountered one. We found

Reduction in children's symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder during individual tutoring as compared with classroom instruction.

Children who display symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in classrooms are reputed to display fewer symptoms in one-on-one interaction. We tested this hypothesis with children who received tutoring for reading and behavior problems. We selected 30 children whose teacher-rated ADHD symptoms fit a pattern consistent with DSM criteria for the diagnosis. Teachers rated the frequency of symptoms in classrooms before and after tutoring. Tutors rated the frequency of the same behaviors during individual tutoring sessions. Children's ADHD symptoms, as well as oppositional sympt

Behavioral treatment of dizziness secondary to benign positional vertigo following head trauma.

Benign positional vertigo (BPV) represents a challenge to rehabilitation due to the subjective nature of the complaint of dizziness, frequent failure of pharmacologic intervention, and complicating psychologic factors. Behavioral therapy was used to treat a 26-year-old woman who complained of debilitating dizzy spells after mild head injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident. During a three-week baseline period before treatment, the patient reported a weekly average of 48 dizzy spells, which prevented participation in independent activities and kept her homebound and psychologically distres

Transdiagnostic psychopathology among individuals with co-occurring problematic pornography use and alcohol use problems.

Despite the established relationship between compulsive sexual behaviors (CSBs) and alcohol use problems, the consequences of co-occurring problematic pornography use (PPU) and alcohol use problems remain unclear (Ballester-Arnal et al., 2020). This study sought to identify if individuals experiencing PPU alone, alcohol use problems alone, and co-occurring PPU and alcohol use problems significantly differ across transdiagnostic processes of psychopathology. Participants completed a cross-sectional survey and were grouped as follows: (1) no PPU/no alcohol use problems (n = 2085), (2) clinically

Perceived discrimination and anxiety sensitivity in terms of alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and drinking coping motives among racially/ethnically minoritized college students.

Introduction: Across the college student population within the United States (U.S.), alcohol misuse is a problematic addictive behavior. However, there is limited knowledge about the social determinants of health and individual difference factors related to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and coping motives for drinking among racial/ethnic minority college students. The present study investigated the singular and interactive effects of perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and anxiety sensitivity in relation to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and coping motives f
