Consumer sexual relationships in a forensic mental health hospital: perceptions of nurses and consumers.

The management of consumer-related risk is paramount in a secure forensic mental health facility. However, the consequent risk aversion presents a major barrier to consumers forming sexual relationships in a manner that is open and accepted. Investigation of the views of nurses working in forensic mental health settings on this topic is limited, and even more so for consumers of services. This qualitative exploratory study was undertaken to elicit the views of consumers and nurses about forming sexual relationships within this long-term and secure setting. Individual in-depth interviews were c

Medical students' reactions to anatomic dissection and the phenomenon of cadaver naming.

The teaching of gross anatomy has, for centuries, relied on the dissection of human cadavers, and this formative experience is known to evoke strong emotional responses. The authors hypothesized that the phenomenon of cadaver naming is a coping mechanism used by medical students and that it correlates with other attitudes about dissection and body donation. The authors developed a 33-question electronic survey to which 1,156 medical students at 12 medical schools in the United States voluntarily responded (November 2011-March 2012). They also surveyed course directors from each institution reg

Personality traits and educational identity formation in late adolescents: longitudinal associations and academic progress.

Changes in personality traits in late adolescence and young adulthood are believed to co-occur with changes in identity, but little research is available that supports this hypothesis. The present study addressed this relatively understudied area of research by examining longitudinal associations of Big Five personality traits (i.e., Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness) with dimensions of identity formation (i.e., identification with commitment and exploration in depth) in the domain of education. For this purpose, we used four annual waves of longitudinal

The cognitive and academic profiles of reading and mathematics learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Why do general practitioners not screen and intervene regarding alcohol consumption in Slovenia? A focus group study.

AIM: To identify barriers influencing general practitioners' decisions regarding alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in Slovenia. BACKGROUND: Slovenia occupies third place in a league of 51 European countries with respect to alcohol consumption. General practitioners in Slovenia have the majority of contacts with patients in primary healthcare but they rarely or never ask patients about their drinking habits. METHOD: Six focus groups with a total of 32 general practitioners from different parts of the country were set up. Participants discussed varied topics and the most significa

Should we train the trainers? Results of a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: The development of efficient training methods in surgery is increasingly important. The effectiveness of training trainers is unclear. This study was designed to determine the effect on their trainees' performance of instructing trainers in a specific cognitive training method. STUDY DESIGN: Ten trainers from a university teaching hospital were randomized to train novices on a one-to-one basis in a simulated procedure using either a four-step cognitive method or their own unspecified method. Thirty trainees were randomly assigned to either a cognitive or standard trainer. After tr

Knowledge of oral and physical manifestations of anorexia and bulimia nervosa among dentists and dental hygienists.

UNLABELLED: Commercially available parenteral emulsions (n = 4) and admixtures for parenteral nutrition (n = 2) were exposed to UVA and visible irradiation (320-800 nm) at standardized, validated conditions according to the ICH Guideline Q1B (Option 1, to an endpoint corresponding to 1.2 × 10(6) lux h in the range 400-800 nm). Physical stability was evaluated as changes in emulsion droplet size measured by photon correlation spectroscopy, and emulsion droplet zeta potential measured by micro-electrophoresis. Chemical stability was evaluated by detection of lipid peroxidation according to the t

Preparing CNSs for prescriptive authority: Winona State University Model Course.

Medical-surgical clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) have always been involved in treating disease-based and nondisease-based health problems. Recently, expanding state nurse practice acts have allowed medical-surgical CNSs to add pharmacologic agents to their arsenal of advanced practice interventions to best manage their patients' complex healthcare needs. This article discusses the history of prescriptive authority for medical-surgical CNSs, describes a new university program for preparing CNSs for prescriptive authority, summarizes interview responses of 4 students who have completed the uni

Structured clinical breast examination (CBE) training results in objective improvement in CBE skills.

BACKGROUND: A statewide breast cancer care provider needs assessment had identified CBE training as a target educational need. Accordingly, the authors implemented a one-on-one skills-based course for primary care providers (PCPs) across the state. METHOD: The course had two components: a prerequisite self-study manual, followed by a 1 1/2-hour skills-based practicum. As part of the practicum, pre- and post-course testing were performed on standardized silicone breast models. RESULTS: Pre- and post-testing data were available for 205 PCPs who completed the course. In the pre-test period, 59%

Problem based learning as a curricular strategy for medical undergraduates: a tutor's experience.

This article focuses on the experiences and role of a tutor while conducting a problem based learning (PBL) exercise to facilitate the learning of biochemistry and molecular biology. A case presentation of sickle cell anemia was used to frame a module. The objective of this experimental exercise was to assess the suitability and effectiveness of problem based learning in the first year of undergraduate medical course and to practice self-assessment by tutors in this new role of a facilitator of learning through small group discussion. A tutor during such a learning session encouraged the stude

The use of service learning in client environments to enhance ethical reasoning in students.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of two service-learning experiences on the psychosocial and moral reasoning development of occupational therapy students. The assumption was that ethical reasoning ability can be facilitated through participation in value-laden experiences. METHOD: Participants visited older adults in nursing homes (n = 19) or interacted with persons with disabilities in community settings (n = 33). All participants reflected on their experiences through weekly journals. Psychosocial and moral reasoning development were measured at the beginning and end of the exper

An intervention to improve the assessment of alcoholism by practicing physicians.

OBJECTIVE: Alcoholism is estimated to affect at least 10% of American adults. Despite the fact that early diagnosis is possible and early treatment can prevent great suffering, American physicians typically diagnose and treat alcoholism less than half the time. Several authors have suggested additional physician education as a possible way to improve alcoholism assessment skills and increase the diagnosis rate. METHODS: A baseline audit, an educational intervention, and a post-intervention audit were done with physicians and nurse practitioners in an urban family practice group, using informa
