Gender differences among patients with a single depressive episode.

BACKGROUND: Studies on gender differences in depression have usually included a mixture of patients with first-episode, chronic and recurrent depression. Consequently, the results might be confounded by the history of depression among participants. The present study evaluated gender differences in sociodemographic, clinical and treatment variables among patients suffering exclusively from single-episode depression. METHOD: Systematic recruitment of 301 participants via the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register and assessment by means of questionnaires and interviews regarding psychiatr

Evidence for a unique profile of levetiracetam in rodent models of seizures and epilepsy.

The protective and adverse effect potentials of levetiracetam ((S)-alpha-ethyl-2-oxo-pyrrolidine acetamide) in rodent models of seizures and epilepsy were compared with the profile of several currently prescribed and newly developed antiepileptic drugs. Levetiracetam was devoid of anticonvulsant activity in the acute maximal electroshock seizure test and in the maximal pentylenetetrazol seizure test in mice (up to 540 mg/kg, i.p.) but exhibited potent protection against generalised epileptic seizures in electrically and pentylenetetrazol-kindled mice (ED50 values = 7 and 36 mg/kg, respectively

Does ECT alter brain structure?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether ECT causes structural brain damage. METHOD: The literature review covered the following areas: cognitive side effects, structural brain imaging, autopsies of patients who had received ECT, post-mortem studies of epileptic subjects, animal studies of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) and epilepsy, and the neuropathological effects of the passage of electricity, heat generation, and blood-brain barrier disruption. RESULTS: ECT-induced cognitive deficits are transient, although spotty memory loss may persist for events immediately surroun

Neuromodulation in African Health Systems: Barriers, Opportunities, and Future Directions.

OBJECTIVES: Neuromodulation includes a spectrum of therapeutic interventions that have transformed the management of neurologic and psychiat … ity, and supplemented with an analysis of barriers, opportunities, and future directions. RESULTS: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most practiced neuromodulation modality in Africa, but it is delivered inconsistently, with unmodified ECT still being practiced in some countries owing to resource constraints. Deep brain stimulation programs exist in only four to five …

Environmental and patient safety outcomes of a health-system Green Anesthesia Initiative (GAIA): a retrospective observational cohort study.

Case report: Methylphenidate improved chronic pain in an adult patient with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain remains a health problem that is difficult to treat adequately. Its unknown cause and complex comorbidity with ot … ssants and an epidural block. Furthermore, symptoms worsened following several sessions of modified electroconvulsive therapy. After a thorough assessment at our child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient clinic, we confirmed a diagnosis of adult ADHD with a predominantly inattentive type. Genomic instability in radiation-induced mouse lymphoma from p53 heterozygous mice.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric catatonia is a highly co-morbid condition with treatment options often limited to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or lorazepam. However, lorazepam may not be readily available, and access to ECT is limited by restrictive legislation and stigma. This study aims to provide alternative treatment options for pediatric catatonia. METHODS: The study involved a single-site retrospective analysis of a private university hospital in the southern United States. The study included patients under eighteen with catatonia who received psychopharmacologic treatment with an agent othe…

Suicide-specific psychosocial interventions are important for suicide prevention and should also be part of the management of patients with MDD with suicidal behavior. CONCLUSIONS: There are still …

The consulting psychiatrist and the polydipsia-hyponatremia syndrome in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The authors seek to extend understanding and treatment of hospitalized schizophrenics presenting with complications of polydipsia and dilutional hyponatremia. Attending physicians may ask the consultation/liaison psychiatrist to see schizophrenics with hyponatremically-induced delirium or other psychiatric syndromes. The referring physician may or may not have identified polydipsia and dilutional hyponatremia and their complications. This article will help the consultation/liaison psychiatrist recognize early evidence of water imbalance, describe evaluation, and provide somatic and

Precuneus and psychiatric manifestations: Novel neurobiological formulations through lesion based connectivity mapping of psychopathology.

Lesion-based investigations of psychopathology have preceded contemporary network-neuroscience initiatives. However, brain-lesions detected in routine psychiatric practice are often considered incidental and therefore ignored. Here, we illustrate a strategy to combine individual subject-level lesion information with open-source normative functional-connectomics data to make putative, neuroscience-informed symptom interpretation. Specifically, we report a patient with left precuneus granulomatous lesion and seizures followed by two distinct symptoms - kinetopsia and delusions of nihilism and gu
