Low placental visfatin expression is related to impaired glycaemic control and fetal macrosmia in pregnancies complicated by type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is still related to altered fetal growth and severe maternal complications. We studied the possible role of placental visfatin/nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) in fetal development in T1DM pregnancies, the possible role of placental visfatin in fetal macrosomia. Sixty five pregnant women with T1DM and singleton pregnancy were qualified into the study. Placental visfatin expression was by analysed by RT-PCR. We demonstrated the lowest expression of placental visfatin in women who delivered neonates with birth weight NBW > 4000 g (0.76 ± 0.05, P < 0.…

Depression in pregnancy is associated with decreased glutathione peroxidase activity in fetal cord blood.

The investigation of fetal cord blood (FCB) during child delivery has created a novel topic in the field of psychiatric research. The umbilical vein receives nutrients and oxygen from the mother's circulation and transports them to the fetal circulation. Investigating fetal cord blood during delivery is beneficial for understanding the fetal environment. Depression in pregnancy is associated with medical and emotional burdens. In this study, we aimed to investigate glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the FCB of depressed mothers and healthy controls. Our study in

Benign thyroid disease in pregnancy: A state of the art review.

Thyroid dysfunction is the commonest endocrine disorder in pregnancy apart from diabetes. Thyroid hormones are essential for fetal brain development in the embryonic phase. Maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy may have significant adverse maternal and fetal outcomes such as preterm delivery, preeclampsia, miscarriage and low birth weight. In this review we discuss the effect of thyroid disease on pregnancy and the current evidence on the management of different thyroid conditions in pregnancy and postpartum to improve fetal and neonatal outcomes, with special reference to existing gui

Differential expression of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in the genital tubercle (GT) of fetal male rat following maternal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP).

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most abundantly produced endocrine disruptors that leaches out from polyvinyl chloride plastics and can cause hypospadias in male rats during maternal exposure. The objective of this study was to first explore the roles of Wnt/β-catenin pathway in the fetal rat genital tubercle (GT) following in-utero exposure to DBP. Timed-pregnant rats were given DBP by gastric intubation at a dose of 750 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day from gestation day (GD) 14 to GD18 to establish a rat model of hypospadias. On GD19, genital tubercle down-regulation of β-catenin, Phosph

Transcription elongation factor S-II is required for definitive hematopoiesis.

Transcription elongation factor S-II/TFIIS promotes readthrough of transcriptional blocks by stimulating nascent RNA cleavage activity of RNA polymerase II in vitro. The biologic significance of S-II function in higher eukaryotes, however, remains unclear. To determine its role in mammalian development, we generated S-II-deficient mice through targeted gene disruption. Homozygous null mutants died at midgestation with marked pallor, suggesting severe anemia. S-II(-/-) embryos had a decreased number of definitive erythrocytes in the peripheral blood and disturbed erythroblast differentiation in

Fetal, neonatal cord, and maternal plasma concentrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).

OBJECTIVES: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), catalyses the degradation of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. It was the aim of the present study to measure ACE activity in human fetal blood and to determine its changes with advancing gestational age. METHODS: Fetal blood was sampled by cordocentesis from six control fetuses and six fetuses with Rh isoimmunisation. Cord blood was sampled from six preterm neonates, 15 neonates after spontaneous delivery at term and six neonates at term after caesarean section. In addition, maternal ACE values

Prophylactic intrapartum amnioinfusion for patients with oligohydramnios. A prospective randomized study.

This prospective study evaluated whether prophylactic saline amnioinfusion among patients with amniotic fluid index (AFI) < or = 5.0 cm decreases the incidence of adverse fetal outcomes. Randomization of 53 patients with decreased AFI at term, resulted in 21 patients' receiving prophylactic saline amnioinfusion early in labor, prior to development of an abnormal fetal heart rate tracing. For the treatment group the mean AFI on admission was 3.0 cm, and the postamnioinfusion AFI was 8.9 cm. For 32 comparison (noninfusion) patients, the mean AFI was 2.9 cm; the group consisted of 17 patients ran

Functional prenatal development of anencephalic and normal anterior pituitary glands. In human and experimental animals studied by peroxidase-labeled antibody method.

In order to investigate the influence of the central nervous system on the functional differentiation of the fetal anterior pituitary gland, the pituitary gland of anencephalic and normal fetus was studied by the peroxidase-labeled antibody method for the localization of various hormones. The only abnormality of pituitary endocrine cells in anencephaly was a marked decrease of ACTH cells. In the normal development, ACTH appeared as the earliest hormone in 5 weeks. And all other hormones were seen in 13 weeks. The reason for the decrease of ACTH cells in anencephaly was speculated to be a suppr

Nonimmune hydrops fetalis management from the perspective of fetal cardiologists: A single tertiary center experience from Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in managing nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF), perinatal mortality is still significant. Fetal cardiac failure eventually occurs regardless of etiology. However, no previous study has addressed NIHF from fetal cardiologists' perspective. Therefore, we evaluated etiology and management of a NIHF cohort requiring fetal cardiologist consultation in a developing country. METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study of 70 cases with NIHF that were referred to a fetal cardiology unit over four years was performed. Demographics, etiologic diagnosis, and outcomes of

[Birth asphyxia as a cause of cerebral palsy].

Birth asphyxia is O2i CO2 exchange disorder during the labour, with consequent hypoxia and ischemia. The term "asphyxia" has been used unprecisely quite often. The most frequently used criteria for birth asphyxia have been: fetal bradycardia, meconium stained amniotic fluid, fetal acido-base status with umbilical artery pH value below 7.10, low Apgar score and need for endotracheal intubation. The correct Apgar score quantification depends on the examiner. Fetal acido-base status measured in umbilical artery could be useful biochemical parameter of birth asphyxia. Only if the fetal oxygen supp

Higher blood pressure in adolescent boys after very preterm birth and fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Although preterm birth predisposes for cardiovascular disease, recent studies in children indicate normal blood pressure and arterial stiffness. This prospective cohort study therefore assessed blood pressure and arterial stiffness in adolescents born very preterm due to verified fetal growth restriction (FGR). METHODS: Adolescents (14 (13-17) years; 52% girls) born very preterm with FGR (preterm FGR; n = 24) and two control groups born with appropriate birth weight (AGA), one in similar gestation (preterm AGA; n = 27) and one at term (term AGA; n = 28) were included. 24-hour ambu

The pitfalls of using birthweight centile charts to audit care.

OBJECTIVES: Timely delivery of fetal growth restriction (FGR) is important in reducing stillbirth. However, targeted earlier delivery of FGR preferentially removes smaller babies from later gestations, thereby right-shifting the distribution of birthweights at term. This artificially increases the birthweight cutoffs defining the lower centiles and redefines normally grown babies as small by population-based birthweight centiles. Our objective was to compare updated Australian national population-based birthweight centile charts over time with the prescriptive INTERGROWTH-21st standard. METHO

Antenatal interventions for preventing stillbirth, fetal loss and perinatal death: an overview of Cochrane systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth is generally defined as a death prior to birth at or after 22 weeks' gestation. It remains a major public health concern globally. Antenatal interventions may reduce stillbirths and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in settings with high rates of stillbirth. There are several key antenatal strategies that aim to prevent stillbirth including nutrition, and prevention and management of infections. OBJECTIVES: To summarise the evidence from Cochrane systematic reviews on the effects of antenatal interventions for preventing stillbirth for low risk or unselected popula
