BACKGROUND: Upper limb coordination in persons post-stroke may be estimated by the commonly used Finger-to-Nose Test (FNT), which is also part of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment. The total movement time (TMT) is used as a clinical outcome measure, while kinematic evaluation also enables an objective quantification of movement quality and motor performance. Our aims were to kinematically characterize FNT performance in persons post-stroke and controls and to investigate the construct validity of the test in persons with varying levels of impairment post-stroke.
METHODS: A three-dimensional motion ca

This study was undertaken in an attempt to improve the versatility of the posterior interosseous artery flap (PIA flap) and to decrease flap complication rate. The PIA flap was used for resurfacing 25 cases of the hand and distal forearm over a 2-year period. Observations were made on the anatomy of the PIA flap and its distal reach. Doppler analysis was made a mandatory part of the preoperative planning. Flaps were also raised from the zone of injury if Doppler confirmed the presence of good perforators. No attempt was made to identify the anastomosis between the anterior interosseous artery

This review outlines the skin, vascular and musculoskeletal symptoms affecting the hand during systemic inflammatory diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis. Skin lesions are diagnosed clinically and their symptomatology is documented through an extensive series of photographs. These conditions may require specific care before a surgical procedure can be performed. Vascular lesions are also diagnosed clinically and their symptomatology is described in detail. It is important to recognize that acrocyanosis is always benign. The surgeon should be able to distinguish between primary, but benign

We report in 3 patients that high-frequency ultrasound 3-dimensional imaging enabled us to analyze anatomic variations, evaluate local anesthetic spread, and optimize a perineural catheter location by withdrawing it until its tip was appropriately positioned. This innovative technology may provide answers to different problems facing the operator performing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. It may enhance predictability and safety aspects of peripheral nerve blocks.

Bartsocas-Papas syndrome (BPS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by popliteal pterygia, syndactyly, ankyloblepharon, filiform bands between the jaws, cleft lip and palate, and genital malformations. Most of the BPS cases reported to date are fatal either in the prenatal or neonatal period. Causative genetic defects of BPS were mapped on the RIPK4 gene encoding receptor-interacting serine/threonine kinase 4, which is critical for epidermal differentiation and development. RIPK4 variants are associated with a wide range of clinical features ranging from milder ectodermal dyspl

Seventeen cases of late ulnar paralysis treated by neurolysis-transposition are reported. The clinical characteristics of these paralysis are emphasized. A very prolonged symptom free interval, a rapid onset and a severe involvement. The ulnar transposition was most often done subcutaneously. Cubitus valgus and definite nerve compression proximal to the arcade of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle are almost always present. The results as regards the neuropathy are notable: no patient is completely cured and only half are improved. An anatomical study of the nerve path shows the essential role, i

INTRODUCTION: Displaced fractures of the base of the proximal phalanx (PP) remain a challenging surgical problem. Regardless of the osteosynthesis material chosen (K-wires, screws, plates), when open reduction is required, the surgical approaches typically used are either dorsal or lateral. These approaches inevitably cause surgical trauma to the extensor apparatus which, via the intrinsic system, envelops the dorsal and lateral surfaces of PP at this level. To preserve the extensor apparatus, the authors propose a palmar approach combined with anterior plate fixation.

The unmet timely diagnosis requirements, that take place years after substantial neural loss and neuroperturbations in neuropsychiatric disorders, affirm the dire need for biomarkers with proven efficacy. In Parkinson's disease (PD), Mild Cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimers disease (AD) and psychiatric disorders, it is difficult to detect early symptoms given their mild nature. We hypothesize that employing fine motor patterns, derived from natural interactions with keyboards, also knwon as keystroke dynamics, could translate classic finger dexterity tests from clinics to populations in-the

UNLABELLED: The venom arsenal of the New Guinea small-eyed snake, Micropechis ikaheka, was investigated by a joint cDNA sequencing and venomics approach. Twenty-seven full-length DNA sequences encoding novel venom proteins were recovered in this study. Using this cDNA dataset we achieved locus-specific resolution for 19 out of the approximately 50 reverse-phase- and SDS-PAGE-separated venom proteins. The venom proteome of M. ikaheka is dominated by at least 29 D49-phospholipase A₂ (PLA₂) and 14 short and long neurotoxins of the three-finger toxin (3FTx) family. These protein classes represent,

BACKGROUND: With an incidence of about 2-4 per 1,000 residents per year, the distal radial fracture is the most common fracture in the human skeleton. The introduction of fixed-angle plate systems for extension fractures at the radius was evaluated in a prospective study performed at our hospital after selection and acquisition of a new system. The focus of our interest was whether a secondary loss of reduction can be avoided by this plating system.
METHODS: We reviewed 80 patients treated for unstable distal radius fractures using a volar fixed-angle plate. Postoperative management included

BACKGROUND: Clinical features of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) include slowly progressive distal muscle weakness, atrophy and sensory loss. Upper-limb involvement results in reduced manual dexterity interfering with the execution of daily activities.
OBJECTIVE: To identify which hand function impairments are determinants of manual dexterity in CMT1A.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional, observational study, hand function (strength, mobility and sensory function) and manual dexterity (Sollerman hand function test) were evaluated in adults with CMT1A. Multiple linear regression analysi

BACKGROUND: Stenosing tenosynovitis is a common chronic tendon disease that seriously affects daily life and working ability. However, its treatment is very challenging and requires more effective treatment methods. A large number of clinical studies have shown that extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) may relieve the symptoms of stenosing tenosynovitis, but there are no published reviews or meta-analyses specifically and comprehensively evaluating its efficacy for this disease. Therefore, through conducting a meta-analysis, this study systematically evaluated the therapeutic effect of ESW

OBJECTIVE: To report preoperative planning using 3D printing to plan thumb reconstructions with second toe transplant.
METHODS: Between December 2013 and October 2015, the thumbs of five patients with grade 3 thumb defects were reconstructed using a wrap-around flap and second toe transplant aided by 3D printing technology. CT scans of hands and feet were analyzed using Boholo surgical simulator software (www.boholo.com). This allowed for the creation of a mirror image of the healthy thumb using the uninjured thumb. Using 3D images of the reconstructed thumb, a model of the big toe and the se
