State of the art survey on MRI brain tumor segmentation.

Brain tumor segmentation consists of separating the different tumor tissues (solid or active tumor, edema, and necrosis) from normal brain tissues: gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In brain tumor studies, the existence of abnormal tissues may be easily detectable most of the time. However, accurate and reproducible segmentation and characterization of abnormalities are not straightforward. In the past, many researchers in the field of medical imaging and soft computing have made significant survey in the field of brain tumor segmentation. Both semiautomatic a

Persistent homological sparse network approach to detecting white matter abnormality in maltreated children: MRI and DTI multimodal study.

We present a novel persistent homological sparse network analysis framework for characterizing white matter abnormalities in tensor-based morphometry (TBM) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Traditionally TBM is used in quantifying tissue volume change in each voxel in a massive univariate fashion. However, this obvious approach cannot be used in testing, for instance, if the change in one voxel is related to other voxels. To address this limitation of univariate-TBM, we propose a new persistent homological approach to testing more complex relational hypotheses across brain regions. The prop

Anatomic differences in early blindness: a deformation-based morphometry MRI study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the regional changes in the early onset of blindness using the deformation-based morphometry (DBM) method. METHODS: A total of 15 early blindness and 30 gender- and age-matched sighted control subjects were recruited for the study. Statistically significant changes in regional volume were analyzed using DBM through HAMMER registration. Using this technique, changes in regional tissue volume can be detected on the basis of the deformation field derived from the warping subject to the template image. A voxelwise estimation of the morphologi

Development and testing of a CW-EPR apparatus for imaging of short-lifetime nitroxyl radicals in mouse head.

This article describes a method for reducing the acquisition time in three-dimensional (3D) continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW-EPR) imaging. To visualize nitroxyl spin probes, which have a short lifetime in living organisms, the acquisition time for a data set of spectral projections should be shorter than the lifetime of the spin probes. To decrease the total time required for data acquisition, the duration of magnetic field scanning was reduced to 0.5s. Moreover, the number of projections was decreased by using the concept of a uniform distribution. To demonstrate this faste

Clinical applications of renal scintigraphy.

Nuclear medicine techniques for evaluating the kidney and urinary tract have evolved from pioneering studies with primitive radiopharmaceuticals and hand-held probe detectors to a sophisticated technology capable of providing important physiologic and anatomic information. Advances in nuclear medicine and computer technology over the past decade have resulted in improved, clinically useful scintigraphic studies to assist clinicians in examining patients who have diseases of the genitourinary tract. However, renal scintigraphy is a complex subject. Five different radiopharmaceuticals are availa

Morphometric studies using neuroimaging.

The contemporary revolution in computerized information processing has enabled the development of methods to quantitate brain morphology in vivo, especially through the analysis of MR imaging. The first brain morphometric studies employed a planimetric approach, usually assessing the cross-sectional areas of midline structures such as the corpus callosum. Subsequently, computer-assisted methods have been developed to quantitate brain volumes, and to segment the white and gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid compartments of the brain. Studies of Tourette, Turner, Down, and Williams syndromes als

A study of bile duct dynamics using computer-assisted 99mTc-HIDA scintigraphy.

Using computer-assisted scintillation camera imaging bile duct dynamics was studied in 28 patients with a nonvisualizing gallbladder due to acute cholecystitis. Postoperative repeat studies were carried out in 8 of the 28 patients. In half of the studies three accumulations of activity were evident on the 60 added 1-min views. These three accumulations were interpreted as corresponding to the biliary tree. An explanation for the separation of the activity into three depots, is proposed. Analysis of the time-activity curves of the accumulations showed an irregular exchange of activity, suggesti

Simultaneous myocardial T1, T2, T1ρ and fat fraction mapping with hybrid dual-echo cartesian acquisition and dictionary matching.

BACKGROUND: T1, T2, T1ρ and fat fraction (FF) are important parameters for diagnosing various pathological changes in the myocardium. However, existing methods either require repeated breath-holds to quantify multiple parameters, or rely on complex image reconstruction to remove artifacts arising from highly undersampled acquisition. To address this technical gap, a free-breathing Dixon-MultiMap technique is proposed to allow for simultaneous myocardial T1, T2, T1ρ and FF mapping in a single scan with conventional single-shot Cartesian acquisition. METHODS: Dixon-MultiMap employs electrocardi

Multimodal neuroimaging relationships in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy is characterized primarily by 4R tau inclusions, atrophy in the brainstem and basal ganglia, and neurodegeneration along the dentatorubrothalamic tract, which are measurable in vivo using flortaucipir PET, T1-weighted MRI, and MRI with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). However, little is known about how these processes relate to each other. The aim of this study was to investigate multimodal associations between flortaucipir PET uptake, tissue volume loss on structural MRI and white matter tract disruption on DTI. Thirty-four patients with progressive supranuclear

Neural substrates of lower extremity motor, balance, and gait function after supratentorial stroke using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke impairs motor, balance, and gait function and influences activities of daily living. Understanding the relationship between brain lesions and deficits can help clinicians set goals during rehabilitation. We sought to elucidate the neural substrates of lower extremity motor, balance, and ambulation function using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) in supratentorial stroke patients. METHODS: We retrospectively screened patients who met the following criteria: first-ever stroke, supratentorial lesion, and available brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. MRIs of
