Measuring the composition and availability of human resources for health by sex in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2023, and workforce gaps for universal health coverage: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the size, gender composition, and cadre mix of the health workforce and how it has evolved across time and locations can inform policies for planning, recruitment, training, and retention of human resources for health (HRH), and improvement of access to the health-care workforce among populations. Using comparable and standardised data sources, we aim to describe the composition and density of health workers by sex among 20 cadres for 204 countries and territories over 1990-2023 and quantify workforce shortfalls relative to universal health coverage (UHC) attainment.

Interventions To Automate Medicaid Renewals Reduce Procedural Denials And Increase Coverage.

Burdensome Medicaid renewal processes are a known source of coverage loss among eligible people. In spring 2023, the pause in Medicaid disenrollment resulting from the COVID-19 public health emergency ended, and states began redetermining eligibility for more than ninety million beneficiaries. In the early months of these redeterminations, a large majority of those disenrolled lost coverage for procedural reasons, such as missing paperwork. We examined an effort by the federal government to work with four states to increase automated ex parte Medicaid renewals with the goal of reducing procedu

Three-year trends in early hip fracture surgery surrounding a national reimbursement policy in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Timely surgical intervention for hip fractures is essential for improving outcomes in older adults. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) recently introduced a reimbursement policy to incentivize hip fracture surgery within 48 h. However, the impact and sustainability of this policy remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 498 patients aged ≥ 75 years with hip fractures at a single Japanese hospital from 2022 (pre-policy) to 2024 (post-policy year 2). We performed univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of t

State Medicaid Coverage for Tobacco Cessation Treatments and Barriers to Accessing Treatments - United States, 2018-2022.

The prevalence of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults enrolled in Medicaid is higher than among adults with private insurance; more than one in five adults enrolled in Medicaid smokes cigarettes. Smoking cessation reduces the risk for smoking-related disease and death. Effective treatments for smoking cessation are available, and comprehensive, barrier-free insurance coverage of these treatments can increase cessation. However, Medicaid treatment coverage and treatment access barriers vary by state. The American Lung Association collected and analyzed state-level information regarding coverage…

Health research prioritization in Somalia: setting the agenda for context specific knowledge to advance universal health coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Despite recognition that health research is an imperative to progress toward universal health coverage, resources for health research are limited. Yet, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 85% of the resources available for health research are spent on answering less relevant research questions. This misalignment is partially due to absence of locally determined health research priorities. In this study, we identified health research priorities which, if implemented, can inform local interventions required to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage in Somalia.

Cochlear implant indications: a review of third-party payers' policies for standard and expanded indications.

As cochlear implant (CI) candidacy has expanded, commercial payers in the United States have varied in their adoption of new indications, potentially confusing providers' knowledge about appropriate patients for referral. We reviewed how third-party payers classify the medical necessity of cochlear implants for a variety of indications across the lifespan. We compared policies of the six largest commercial payers in our region, focusing on clinical scenarios for which many centers experience difficulty obtaining pre-authorization. These include: (1) CI in children under 12 months, (2) audiometr
