Sudden infant death syndrome and abnormal metabolism of thiamin.

Although it has been generally accepted that moving the infant from the prone to the supine position has solved the problem of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), it has been hypothesized that this is an insufficient explanation and that a mixture of genetic risk, some form of stressful incident and marginal brain metabolism is proportionately required. It is suggested that each of these three variables, with dominance in one or more of them, act together in the common etiology. Much has been written about the association of thiamin and magnesium but the finding of extremely high concentratio

Low serum vitamin D levels are associated with neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia and prolonged phototherapy duration: a retrospective case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels, indirect hyperbilirubinemia severity, and phototherapy duration in term neonates. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 79 term neonates admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit between March 2023 and March 2024. Thirty-nine neonates requiring phototherapy for indirect hyperbilirubinemia (case group) were compared with 40 healthy term neonates (control group). Clinical and biochemical parameters, including bilirubin, 25(OH)D, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and alkaline p

Phosphorus application enhances cadmium tolerance in Salix caprea via physiological and anatomical adjustments.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination has pronounced negative effects on plant physiological processes, while phosphorus (P) as an essential macronutrient might mitigate Cd toxicity by modulating plant adaptivity. This study employed Salix caprea as a model to assess the effects of P on physiological and anatomical characteristics under Cd stress. The results demonstrated that plant growth, e.g., height, basal diameter and biomass, photosynthetic pigment content and net photosynthetic rate were all significantly inhibited by Cd stress. However, adequate P could alleviate these inhibitory effects in contr

Importance of Magnesium Status in COVID-19.

A large amount of published research points to the interesting concept (hypothesis) that magnesium (Mg) status may have relevance for the outcome of COVID-19 and that Mg could be protective during the COVID disease course. As an essential element, Mg plays basic biochemical, cellular, and physiological roles required for cardiovascular, immunological, respiratory, and neurological functions. Both low serum and dietary Mg have been associated with the severity of COVID-19 outcomes, including mortality; both are also associated with COVID-19 risk factors such as older age, obesity, type 2 diabet

Seizure-induced impairment in neuronal ketogenesis: Role of zinc-α2-glycoprotein in mitochondria.

Ketone bodies (KBs) were known to suppress seizure. Untraditionally, neurons were recently reported to utilize fatty acids and produce KBs, but the effect of seizure on neuronal ketogenesis has not been researched. Zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) was reported to suppress seizure via unclear mechanism. Interestingly, ZAG was involved in fatty acid β-oxidation and thus may exert anti-epileptic effect by promoting ketogenesis. However, this promotive effect of ZAG on neuronal ketogenesis has not been clarified. In this study, we performed immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry to identify potential

Neural depolarization triggers Mg2+ influx in rat hippocampal neurons.

Homeostasis of magnesium ion (Mg(2+)) plays key roles in healthy neuronal functions, and deficiency of Mg(2+) is involved in various neuronal diseases. In neurons, we have reported that excitotoxicity induced by excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate increases intracellular Mg(2+) concentration ([Mg(2+)]i). However, it has not been revealed whether neuronal activity under physiological condition modulates [Mg(2+)]i. The aim of this study is to explore the direct relationship between neural activity and [Mg(2+)]i dynamics. In rat primary-dissociated hippocampal neurons, the [Mg(2+)]i and [Ca(2+)

Low zinc, iron, and calcium intakes of Northeast Thai school children consuming glutinous rice-based diets are not exacerbated by high phytate.

Phytate, a salt of phytic acid (myo-inositol 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakisphosphate), is found in certain plant-based foods. It strongly chelates minerals, forming insoluble complexes in the small intestine that cannot be digested or absorbed. Information on the phytate content of rice-based diets of children in Northeast Thailand is limited. In this study 1-day weighed duplicate diet composites were collected from 40 Northeast Thai children (age 6-13 years) randomly selected from participants (n=567) of an efficacy trial in Ubon Ratchathani province. Diet composites were analyzed for zinc, iron, and ca

[The role of connective tissue dysplasia in the forming of mitral valve prolapse].

Connective tissue (CT) is a multifunctional universal structure of great importance to the human organism. Constituting about 50% of the body mass, CT forms a frame (skeleton) and outer cover (skin), as well as the inner medium, through which all structural elements receive nutrients and extract metabolic products. The great number of links, constituting the CT system, each of which is controlled genetically and is liable to genetic lesions, creates conditions for heterogeneity of malformations and diseases involving CT. Non-differentiated CT dysplasia (NDCTD) is a genetically heterogenous gro

Coexisting independent sodium-sensitive and sodium-insensitive mechanisms of genetic hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).

Some essential hypertensive patients and genetic hypertensive rat strains have less than the normal levels of Mg2+ tightly bound to the plasma membranes of their erythrocytes and other cells, i.e., the magnesium binding defect (MgBD). This binding defect appears to cause increased passive permeability of the membrane to Na+ and thereby its increased intracellular concentration, particularly if the Na+-extrusion enzyme systems of the cell are also defective. The Na+-Ca2+ exchange system in the cell membrane exports Na+ and imports Ca2+, increasing the tone of the smooth muscle cell and thus pro

Insulin secretion in uremia: effect of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D metabolites.

Insulin resistance is almost universal among uremic patients. There are, however, two different subgroups of uremic patients with regard to glucose tolerance. About half of uremic patients can augment their insulin secretion in response to glucose loads to overcome the insulin resistance and maintain glucose tolerance. In the other half of uremic patients, insulin secretion following glucose loads is not different from normal values so that glucose intolerance results. There is recent evidence that hyperparathyroidism or vitamin D deficiency may inhibit insulin secretion in uremia. Parathyroid

Bone calcification and calcium homeostasis in rats with non-insulin-dependent diabetes induced by streptozocin.

The effect of mild, non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) on bone calcification and calcium (Ca) homeostasis was studied in growing rats (males and females). The diabetic state was characterized by mild insulin deficiency, plasma levels being 73% of controls, and mild hyperglycemia, with nonfasting plasma glucose levels of 1.5 times normal. There was no difference in plasma levels of Ca, phosphate (Pi), magnesium (Mg), alkaline phosphatase, immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH), calcitonin, 25-(OH)vitamin D (25[OH]D), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25[OH]2D), and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (24,

Foliar magnesium application improves sweet corn yield: boosting nutrient uptake and grain carbohydrate under dense planting condition.

Magnesium (Mg) plays a critical role in regulating yield and grain quality in corn. However, its management is often overlooked in cultivation, particularly under high-density planting conditions, where intensified nutrient competition can exacerbate Mg deficiency. To address the knowledge gap in Mg management strategies, we conducted three-season field trials (2021-2022) evaluating foliar spraying with different concentrations of Mg fertilizer under dense planting conditions. The results showed that foliar spraying with 4% Mg significantly increased sweet corn fresh ear yield, ear weight, gra
